I was trying to get back to the West Coast to see relatives, but haven't bought my tickets yet. Last time I checked prices were around $250 per person r/t.

Now they are almost double.

I would have bought tickets earlier but some family health issues arose and I was worried that plans may change drastically so I didn't buy them.

Any suggestions? I have been looking at nearby airports on this end and that end, and altering dates a bit to see if that would work as well. So far, nothing is helping too much.

I haven't personally used it, but maybe try priceline?

If feel your pain. Our flight from DC to Denver for 4 people is 2,400 dollars this summer. We go go visit my InLaws and this is way more than we have ever paid. What drives me crazy is that you have to clear your cookies off every time you look at prices because they will increase ticket prices when you look again.
Try Tuesday nights for buying airline tickets. Good luck!

What time of year are you flying? Is it near a holiday, because prices will be high near holidays.
Flying out on a Wednesday will often give you the lowest rates. The next lowest rate day is Tuesday, then Saturday.

I've also heard (as a pp mentioned) to try Tuesday nights for buying airline tickets. My dsil says around 2 am works best, but I've also heard Tuesday afternoon.

I have put in that I am willing to change dates, change airports, etc....and it is still coming up high. It is not close to a holiday.

Yikes!
