...since I left the office to come home. I was headed down my street and from around the corner come two large dogs. Shep Mix and some kind of Retriever Mix, both older. I hear this horrible screaming and I can't figure out what the heck it is until I see something in the Retreiver's mouth. As they got closer I realized it was a Chihuahua, the dog had it all the way in his mouth with the legs pointing out. The poor dog was screaming and screaming. They run past me up the hill, I throw the car into reverse and start backing up all the way up the street. There was no way I could catch up but a truck of landscapers was coming down the street and they chased down the dogs and blocked them off.

By this point I had put the car in park and was running towards the dogs. (side note that I'm WAY out of shape and still haven't stopped coughing) The guys had gotten out and were screaming/jumping at the big dogs to drop the Chi. He would drop him but then lunge again and pick him up and run. Just like a toy; the poor little dog is screaming and screaming. Finally he dropped him and the two ran off, the little dog drug himself under the landscapers truck.

He was petrified and bleeding everywhere, the guys finally got gloves out and wrapped their arms with tarp to pull him out. He was snapping and screaming when you got near him. They put him in my backseat and I headed to the emergency vet. I stopped to try to read his tag again since he was just lying in the seat and was able to call his parents. They just live several houses down from me and had no idea he was out. Apparently he was in the back to do his business and the two dogs either dug in or pushed in the gate to get him.

They were going to their vet with him, it's very sad. His name is Woody and he's 14 years old, he couldn't weigh more than several pounds. He wasn't really using his back end when we got him out of the car and was bleeding pretty severely from several wounds. :( I'm going to stop down there tomorrow to see if he's ok or what the vet says. Ugh, just horrible.

The other two dogs were friendly to people, after the guys ran them off they were running up to walkers wagging their tails. They had collars on but I couldn't take the time to check the tags and they were long gone.

It's been over an hour and I'm still shaky. I feel so bad for that little dog and I hope he's ok. :(

Phew, I feel better now that I wrote that all out.

Update:
Woody's Mom called. They had to put him down at the emergency clinic tonight. There were puncture wounds to his lungs among a lot of other injuries. Considering his age they and the vet decided it was the best thing. I'm just so sad for him and his family. She said they've had him since he was 2 months old.

Well bless you for being there for the little guy!
Big dogs probably thought he was some kind of toy.
My big dogs are TERRIFIED of little dogs, but I understand some big dogs can't resist trying to play with the little ones.

Thank goodness you were there and brave enough to stop!

Keep us posted!!!

I commend you and the men for helping that little dog. Good thing you witnessed what happened. I hope the little dog is o.k. Let us know how he's doing. :thumbsup2

Awww, poor little Woody. I hope he is able to recover. :wizard:

Thanks so much for trying to help him. Please let us know when hear something.

Holy cow...that was pretty brave of you. You had no idea if those dogs would've turned on you.

That's something I often think of when going to pet a dog -- I NEVER go in slow or let them sniff me...I always assume they're going to be friendly and just scratch their ears and stuff.

Poor little guy...I hope he makes it. His parents must be devastated.

Thank you so much for helping that poor little dog. I am sending :grouphug: to you both. This past summer a chow broke out of it's house (thundered through the front door)on our street and ran out and mortally wounded a poor little pup that was being walked on lead by it's owner, and family. It got to the vet still alive but passed during the night. The attack was witnessed by many people and it took 6 strong men,a big stick,a garden hose and a lot of screaming for the bigger dog to be pried off. The big dog was not put down however I believe that there is an ongoing suit. The family was traumtized-they had rescued the little dog only a few weeks before after their dog died. They had a ton of guilt that they had rescued this poor baby only to have it killed so brutally. The next day my husband went out and bought me a baseball bat to carry when I walk our dogs. God bless you for helping and comforting that baby-no matter what happens the family knows their puppy was comforted in it's distress.:grouphug:

Awww :( Thank you for being there for the little guy. At least you were able to free him from those big dogs. I hope he's going to be okay.

People criticize me for being overprotective of my chihuahua I always pick her up around big dogs even if they are friendly. She isn't too keen on them anyways lol.

You did an amazing thing. I hope the poor little guy is ok.

I'm glad you were there for him, and I know his owners are too. I hope he's OK.

WOw, how sad! :sad1:

Please keep us posted on how he is doing!

I get the same thing, because I am WAY overprotective of my mini dachshund. She has survived one large dog attack (by a black lab, while I was walking her on her leash) and I don't want to go through that again.

That is so sad. I hope animal control can catch the dogs before they attack another dog, or a person.

oh thats just awful. My pug was attacked by an Akita a few years back. Scariest thing ever but luckily he survived.

I'm really sorry to read your update.

At least you were there to help him.

That just breaks my heart.:sad1:

It was very kind of you and the landscapers to stop and help when you could've just kept on driving. My heart goes out to you and Woody's family.

Sorry to read the update. You and those landscapers did your best, so don't go feeling guilty. I hope they find the owners of the big dogs and make them pay any remaining expenses.

What a sad update, but still...at least Woody was with his family when he passed, not laying under a bush somewhere because no one cared enough to help him.

You did a great thing.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I *know* in my head there was nothing more to do, but I just feel so bad inside for him. I went to a couple houses in the neighborhood this morning that I know walk with small dogs to warn them.

I called animal control this morning and quite frankly it sounded like they didn't give a care. He kept "uh-huh, ok, ok-ing" me and I know he wasn't writing anything down. It just irks me. I think I'm going to make a sign for our park (across from Woodys parents house) and post it warning others. It's just so sad. My dogs probably thought I was nuts last night, I kept hugging them over and over.

Anyway, thanks again guys. I hope little Woody is running happy over the Rainbow Bridge. I think I'm going to go get a card and little something for his parents today.

What a sad story. :sad1: I feel so bad for that poor little doggie... and bad for you since you had to witness such a horrible thing.

You did all you could.

Oh my gosh... how incredibly tragic.

You all tried your very best. That poor little baby - at least he's not in pain anymore. :sad1:
