I received an "un"vitation today.

I called my in-laws this year and gave them a "heads up" that I'm not planning on hostessing Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, this year. Nothing sinister about it, Thanksgiving is the week before we leave for our vacation and Christmas is the week after I have some minor surgery. After hostessing both Thanksgiving and Christmas last year, I just wanted to let family members know that they should feel free to make other plans.

I think a note letting people know that the annual party is not happening this year is a good idea.

What do you think of this. I received a really nice, hand-made "unvitation" today. I say "un" because it actually says that there is no party. My friend has a yearly holiday party, but is not this year because she's going to a nice resort in AZ. This is actually mentioned in the "unvitation" poem. So, my question why even bother with this. I really don't understand the point only to let everyone know they're going on vacation. Which, besides the point, really shouldn't be cause to not have a party. I happen to know that they are not going to be gone the entire holiday season. So, what do you make of this?

Very weird and totally unnecessary to send a card like that.

If it is a yearly thing, maybe she was trying to let all know not to keep the date open. We do a yearly Christmas Eve with friends and always keep it open. We would like to know if it is not planned for this year, so we don't turn down another invitation.

When you do something all the time, people start to expect it. They may not plan their lives around it, but they still notice when it all of a sudden stops. Friends of mine always send out a Christmas letter - one year we didn't get any. We all started wondering what happened? We were very concerned - nothing short of death would keep them from sending it out. They must have had more people contact them that year than ever before!!!
