Hello, I need some major DIS opinions here. DH is having trouble making up his mind, and he wanted me to ask all of you.

We have the opportunity to go to WDW and staying with AP rate Feb 9 - 15. It's a really good deal and with the purchasing APs it would cost us a approx $2400.

Now right now we have an semi finished attic that we'd like to finish up. It needs new wallboard and a floor (there's only a subfloor right now). We budgeted about $1000 to fix the attic, doing the work ourselves. The other part of the equation... DH has fancied a big screen tv for a long time. I've always nixed the idea because we don't have the space in our living/family room right now. However, BestBuy has a great deal on a 52" TV for around $1000. So... there lies the dilemma?

What do you think we should do? Go to Disney which total would be about 8 days or fix the attic and buy a big screen TV.
Keep in mind that we just went Thanksgiving week, have 2 kids, ages 5 and 2 (almost 3) and are thinking of going again in September with my in-laws.

Sorry about the long post and thanks guys.

As much as I love going to Disney, I think I would go for the refinished attic and TV. Although you would certainly have lots of memories from the trip, the entire family can enjoy the attic/big screen TV for years to come. If you just went in Nov., and are planning on going in September as well, then, that TV will bring much more enjoyment for the family.

I was going to say basically what Karen said above, so I will repeat what she said, and the reasons also.

ditto....nixed the trip and use the money for home projects.

I would have to agree with the others. Fix the attic and purchase the tv.

Make sure the attic gets completed you know how husbands are at starting projects and not completeing them.

Whoops. More posted while I was reading. Add them to my list of people I agree with ;) .

Do the attic and get the TV...sell your old TV on Ebay, get some old clother sell them on Ebay..try to get the money by Feb 10th. You have to act fast..but DH and I sold stuff for two weeks and paid for a 12 day vacation!

Otherwise..just paln on going in Sept and enjoy your new space and big TV

6 for attic and tv
0 for disney

Now keep in mind folks... DH is very technically-challenged aka tool-challenged. He doesn't know a screwdriver from a wrench.;) So I'll be doing most of the work.

That said... anyone for the disney trip. We haven't fixed the attic since we moved in to this house last year, and we've had plenty of chances. I figure its got to be subconciously avoiding the whole working issue:teeth:

Agreeing with the above. Take care of the house first and save up for the trip. With the new TV you can watch movies at home instead of going out to the theatre and save some extra towards the trip.

I agree with the majority. Since you just went over Thanksgiving and going again in September, you can skip this quick trip and get the attic done and get the big screen that DH has probably been drooling over for years now.

Am I actually saying this???? Skip the trip and do the home stuff..

Boy, that was hard....

he'll want a surround sound system.

It's setting a bad trend in my opinion. He's already gotten a brand new custom built computer and now this:rolleyes:

How about this? Go to Disney and also buy the big screen. Leave the attic a little longer and sell some stuff on EBAY to make up the difference in prices.

I like this idea. :D I think it's the best compromise.

I just read in psychology today that experiences make people happier, not possessions, and that people are happier spending their money on concert tickets instead of new clothes and on trips instead of home repairs!

How long has it been since you had the vacation?? If it has been more than 8 months, I would do disney, but I like the idea of finding a way to do disney and the big screen and waiting on the attic.

When you mentioned the $2400, did you include food, souveniers and spending cash? If not, then this trip would cost substantially more that the home improvements you mention.

Given that you just went to WDW and plan on going back in sept, I would agree with the others ands skip this trip...but I would add...use the extra $400 to buy YOURSELF something that YOU wouldn't ordinarily splurge on....

btw....I am trying to figure out how you could possibly need $1000 to finish the attic? Is it going to be used as living space (like bedrooms) or something? If not, I think you are overestimating...

Yah, if you are going in september, then I would definately do the attic and TV!

I have to agree with most of the other posters. Fix the attic, for sure. Completing a project that I've been putting off, really boosts my self-esteem.

The TV is a great deal. Go for it. HGTV is AMAZING on a big screen TV!

Good luck
