I really Hate a certain word! Vent

I just don't get 'the four letter word". I hear young people use it to try and sound older. Last night DH and I went to his annual reunion with his old SF friends and their wives, and three of the couples seem to attempt to outdo each other with "the f word". If young people use to sound older than perhaps older people use it to sound younger". I even had the feeling that one woman who used it felt uncomfortable with it but used it anyway. The good news is, I am all set for another year! The host and his wife are very nice btw and I did not hear her use it once.

I use that word quite frequently, especially when I'm driving. It's not to be cool or act younger. It's just an old bad habit.

I don't like that word either, it makes me uncomfortable to hear it. I don't usually use other expletives either, but they don't bother me as much as that one. I will admit though I have said it when I was really, really, really mad.

I don't drink (at all, ever), smoke, do drugs, gamble, etc. But swear? Yes. Big time. Just being honest..... We all have bad habits.

I found out the origination of the word the other day. The last 3 letters stand for Under Consent of the King. Not sure if I am allowed to say the first word.

Your not alone. I also have that bad habit. Like you I don't drink, smoke, drugs, gamble, but my swearing is something else.

Thankfully though I can control it around my kids, but as soon as I'm around other adults, it's like someone flips a switch.

it was used as a "bad name" for people who did. They made them wear signs that spelled it out if they did it illegally. So they started calling them that with an S on the end. It then was turned around to mean what it means today.

Not sure if thats true, but thats what I always heard.

They had a thread about this several months ago and someone posted that this actually turned out not to be correct.

I believe they looked to good ol' Snopes. ETA: Cannot be posted though so you'll have to go look on your own .

I think that's probably a myth--the only reason I'm skeptical is because I know the word in German, and it sounds and is spelled similarly, and could not be explained under that theory since the acronym for those words would be very different in German.

For those that are intellectually inclined, here's an interesting etymology of the word on Wikipedia, for what that's worth.

And, to stay on topic, I used to say that word all the time, and I would still, only I have a four year old and a disapproving husband. I miss it.

I used to be able to swear like a sailor when I was a teenager, but now it just feels cheap, so I try not to. (I'll occaisonally let one fly though...in the right situation).

I should add that it doesn't offend me to hear it, unless I'm with my kids. But I abhor hearing it with my parents or other people that find it offensive. I cringe every time I hear it in a movie if they are in the room. Otherwise, No Big Deal.

I too rarely hear it from my generation, which is why I was surprised to hear it fly around as much as I did last night. Of course to me, more than once would be considered "flying around" because I hate it so much. That is why I wondered if this particular age group was attempting to sound younger. I think it's a degrading word that degrades the user as much as anything else.
