I really Hate a certain word! Vent

::yes::

I also find the word very offensive (as well as the other that's been mentioned on this thread). I didn't grow up hearing swearing of any sort, and DH doesn't swear. In fact, I very rarely am around anybody who does swear (and even then it's very, very mild). I do agree that some are worse than others, but I'm not interested in hearing any of it. It's getting more and more common in public though (our last trip to Sea World was very annoying due to the loud, repeated use of this type of word), and I think it's very unfortunate.

It does seem to be just a part of everyday language around here....I find it offensive, especially when used over and over again in the course of a conversation. It seems to me that people use profanity when trying to gain control /power over a situation....I have to admit it has popped out of my mouth a couple of times when I was totally frustrated, but my word of choice seems to be more the "S" word....again not often but it flies occasionally.
There is a young guy in my dh's office that constantly uses the F word....I dont think he even thinks about it....finally one of the secretaries spoke up and said she had enough and found his language offensive....

Good for her. We rode up in a gondola at Killington and there were two or three teens that were letting the F word fly. I finally said: "Do you eat with that mouth?" They looked totally puzzled. Another woman translated and then they looked offended.

I had an English prof that told me that the "f bomb" was derived from an old Anglo Saxon word meaning "to strike or hit". Which could explain why it has a violent connotation I guess.

I have let one rip now and then, in anger.

The prevalence in 'normal' conversation, male and female alike (when I was younger, women would NEVER say that), is due, IMO, the everyday usage of it in most media...recordings, movies, cable TV. Kids today are not shocked nor 'reserved' with much of anything today. JMO.

I'd rather hear the F-word than some others that I hear frequently. And yes, I use it, but probably less than I used to.

Another good one is "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?"

I thought that you were going to say you hate the word "vent". :rotfl:

I can't say that I'm a big fan of the other word. I think that I've been mad enough a few times this weekend to use it, though. Actually, it's been a bad weekend and I think that I've used all the words that I don't normally say.

I agree. For me hearing profanity (especially when many others are present) is like hearing nails against a chalkboard.

Ok so it if its true how it came to be...how did it turn into its 'other' meaning? :confused3 Unless of course one is into striking and hitting. lol

I don't use it that often but it does come out now and then. My mother hated it! For many years (28 i think) we camped at the same place every weekend. Now don't go thinking we were all that outdoorsy it was more RV'ing in an RV that stayed put. lol Anyway my mother had a bucket that was all painted up nice and hung outside. It said on it F'it bucket. If you used that word in her presence, on her property, you had to deposit a dollar in the bucket. Now she didn't enforce it but it was a reminder in a comical way that she didn't like it. :rotfl2:

My DH and his family on the other hand :earseek: Took me some getting used to.

Myst

As explained to me in a college classroom: It comes from a latin word that means to "jab" or "stab". I am sure I would misspell the latin word but it was similar to our version.

I really dislike the word, yet it comes out of my mouth when I am very, very angry. My DH uses it all the time, I swear if he didn't say that word, he wouldn't say anything! He claims it's because of work, that's how they all talk. I am constantly telling him to stop using it, I hate that the kids (even if they are 12, 15, 17) hear him say it.

When I swear it isn't to act older or younger. Its because I'm usually pissed off about something.

Not sure how to phrase this to TRY to keep everything rated "G" but...

probably the same way that "bang" has become a euphemism?

I use it driving or when I am really really mad. It is just a bad habit.

Well, I love that word, and I used to use it quite frequently, until my DD started using it! :rolleyes1 So then I decided, that I need to stop transfering my bad habits and well, I stopped using THAT word! She doesn't seem to say the others. :confused3 And now, she doesn't say ANY, cause I stopped using THAT word! :teeth:

However, THAT word was replaced with the more pleasant "FREAK" when I MUST say something similar! :earboy2:

Use the word frequently when I am angry, which sometimes I could use that word about 50 times in one week, if I am having a bad week. Sure not proud of it. Became a BAD habit. DH hates when I use that word.

One of the side effects of having been in the Navy is that you really do end up swearing like a sailor. DH is the same way. Even though I do use that word I know when and where I can. I never swear in public, mostly in my car and at home. But mostly in my car! :earboy2:
