When I travelled a lot to the Middle East and back I was disgusted by the amount of locals that had total disregard for the advice of the airline staff, and would keep talking on their mobile phones during taxiing and take off, then have their mobile phones switched on as the plane was coming into land, with mobiles bleeping all over the plane as messages came in. And every single time the plane landed safely with no incident, so it mad me wonder just how much interference these gadgets can give off.
Mythbusters did a thing on Airplane electronic device interference. If I remember rightly it was well and truly busted but as the airlines can't test every device and there is a chance that that one thing could interfere the rule stays.

It's the same with mobile phones at petrol stations. Any number of people have tested the theory that using a mobile on a petrol forecourt will cause armageddon, and not once has it caused a problem.
