Ok, fellow disers: DH and I are going back and forth on getting our 2 DS's (10 & 9 yr. olds) the 8 GB touch. Toys R US has a great deal going on today and tomorrow, $25 gc and $15 I Tune gc. My question: what are the pro's and con's of them. All they have is the DS Lite. Help me out. We don't know what to do. HELP!

THe ipod Touch allows internet access in hotspot areas (or through wifi), and as best I was able to find out, you can't restrict it or set parental controls.

For a 9 and 10 year old, I'm not sure I'd want uncensored internet access.

I know the touch screen is cool, but the there are ipod that allow for music, videos, etc without the internet access, I think.

I often find Toys R Us is on the higher price range for elecronics and I can usually find what I'm looking for cheaper elsewhere even with the coupon and deals.

Not sure if the extra money expenditure for the Touch would be worth it for 9 & 10 yo?

I have 9yo DD who has asked for a Ipod Nano for Christmas - does the music, video etc. but no Internet. Well since she also has a list of other things she wants I couldn't afford the Nano plus the other presents so I went with the San Disk Fuze for seriously a third of the price of Nano!! It does all the same, video, music, 8 GB, radio, voice recording etc. for a great price and slim little device. It also gets great reviews on every site. For DD's first video mp3 device I think this is the way to go to see how she handles it before we go for a higher priced product. :)

I'd be concerned about the internet access at that age. I would go with the Nano, the new ones take videos which the kids think is neat.

Thanks for all the help. One other question: can you download games on the Nano? The reason we were talking about the touch, is that you can download games much cheaper than buying ones for there ds's. Any comments on that? I don't like the fact they can roam the internet by themselves. There is wi-fi in our house and makes me a little nervous when they are in there rooms or downstairs.

I have the same concerns. DSalmost 9 wants an Ipod, but we have wi-fi also....I really don't want him surfing the web alone in his room.

Can you download games from itunes?

Also, does the Nano take pictures also, or just movies?

I often too find that Toys r Us usually sell things at a higher price than say Wal-Mart or Best Buy. Maybe you should comparison shop for a bit for a better deal. Hope that helps!:thumbsup2

I got one for my 2 year old from christmas... from both me and her grandparents (her only presant from us... santa will have to fill out the rest under the christmas tree). She was obsessed with mine the toddler apps are amazing she can trace letters, learn colors, paint, and do simple games and songs. I know a 9 or 10 year old would love it but apps are addiciting but the nice thing is so many are free... if you do decide to do this I have 2 must have for ipod touches ( and please mind there are 3 ipod touches in my house (one of each generation) and an iphone).

number 1 buy a GREAT case this gadget needs to be protected it is medium fragile in a good case it is safe but if you drop it on a hard surface from more than 2 feet the screen could shatter (happened to my first one). the best case if have found is called the Otter Box you can look it up on amazon it is a steal at 20$ and the best case on the market

number 2 if you have lots of dvds or even a few get a video converter program... i use cucu soft dvd to ipod converter it costs about 30$ via download you can google it. you just put your dvd in click a couple of buttons and it takes about 30 min for 1 hour of video to be converted for use on your ipod. So long as you own the dvd of the movie this is not illegal in any way. this is by far the cheapest way of getting videos on an ipod.

We did do that and as of today, TRU had the best deal. I even called Apple direct to see if they would match it, nope, they would match the price, if it was lower, but couldn't match the the $25 TRU gift card or $15 I Tunes card. I even asked TRU if we could instantly use there gift card- nope- there is a 6 hour waiting time period before it will be activated. What to do, what to do:confused3. I know it is ultimately up to us, but I just want to keep hearing other people's opinion.

As a high school teacher - I see 15-18 year olds hysterical over the loss of their iPods - they either get stolen out of backpacks or they let a friend borrow them, or they drop them (the screens are VERY prone to shattering).

JMHO, but I would not let a child have something that expensive and that small - too easily lost/stolen/broken.

The DSi provides a nice amount of wifi with the bonus of a camera.

Just an FYI here, you *can* block internet access on the iPod Touch. I configured my DD10's today and I have it set up where she cannot access eMail, Safari (the internet browser) or YouTube. And I know it works because whenever I'd let her use my iPhone, I'd block those same applications the same way.

Honestly I'd buy one from Amazon.com . The $25 gift card is nice *but*, you're paying taxes on that item to begin with. Not much of a deal IMO. Definitely get the hard case and a screen protector. I've seen adults handle iPods more clumsily than kids. :lmao:

There are games, but very limited for the nano. And not the ones you see on TV. And you can turn wifi off if you are concerned about internet access. And email? Unless you set it up, it won't do anything.

Nano is video only, low/web/youtube resolution. And yes, iTunes is where you can download games.

You will very rarely see the iPod touch (or any Apple product for that matter) at a discount. The differences will be what the store (TRU, Target, etc) choose to throw in.

My company has a purchase plan with Apple, and we are a Microsoft shop, so don't think you have to use Apple computers at work to get it. And I can get the 8GB for $187, so that might be as cheap as you find it for the actual price.

My DS11 has had one for 2 years. He loves his Touch. We have never had any problem with it other than it is sooo thin that he is forever misplacing it. It slides into the couch, under a chair, in between sales papers on the table etc. We double check everything before throwing it out to make sure it is not there.

Auralia,
I am getting my daughter the Ipod Touch for Xmas and this is great to know, Thanks !!!! I was wondering if you convert a movie this way, how much space will it take up? I am only getting her the 8 gig and am wondering if it will be enough storage for movies and music.

well said. Ditto on Amazon that is where I got DS13 32 gig for almost $60 off. I rather have the money off up front and get my itunes cards later.

Also how about having a talk with them about internet safety. All game systems will be internet ready within the next few years as technology moves faster and faster.

I agree, I just bought myself a 64gb I Touch (it's about time...) the technology is great! I also got it from Amazon. I'm just getting used to the features and the technology just boggles the mind. Uncensored internet access can be too much for 9 or 10 yr olds in my opinion.

I bought a 32 GB from TRU today. $15 I-Tunes, $25 Gift Card and 15% for opening a TRU credit card and paying with it. I'm just going to pay off the balance and cancel the account after the payment is made.
