I-Pod Touch for my 10 year old -- how many g's do i need?

I got DBF the 8G for Christmas. He's got 1 full length movie, a ton of songs and some apps. IF I'd had the $$ I would have got him the 32G instead.......
We don't think either of our kids are ready for anything like this just yet, but they both just got phones for Christmas and we just got a laptop last month. LOL
As for the internet capability you have to have access to a wireless connection for it to work, when we are home DBF can go online, when he's at work he can because he can use his company's connection but when are just out and about he can't get online because most connections are PW protected. Just something to know about the internet function. :)

The more memory, the better. :)

My kids have the classic I-PODs, 120 GB. Not as "cool" as the touch, but there is no way even the 32 GB would work for them. They download, not only music, but they also each have a few movies and tons of TV shows. My 13 yo is way past 32 GB on hers, so I guess for us, this was the way to go.

I think an 8 GB would fill up too easily.

I, myself, also have the Classic, but am so wanting that green Nano! I know I would fill it up quickly, but, man, it's sooo pretty. :lovestruc

I say get the 8gb.

I never understand the need to have every single piece of digital media at your fingertips at all times. Using Itunes you can control what gets downloaded to the itouch each time you synch it. So if you know you're going on a trip and want a few extra movies, that's when you stock up on movies, otherwise just have 1 or 2 on there. Games, I constantly go through my library, they all get saved to my computer but only the ones that I'm playing all the time get downloaded.

I just ordered the 8g refurb from Apple store for this very reason for my DD14. Although we have the wi-fi in the house it's on a power strip and it goes out at night, so there will be no midnight texting. And she knows whats appropriate and whats not as far as the internet and will be subject to random searches of her content. She's been wanting to text for too long and with her starting high school next year I thought it was time. This works out great because we don't have to pay for the texting since she only has a pay as you go phone.

One silly question...can she still receive texts even if her ipod touch isn't on? I"d think she could and they'd be there the next time she turns it on, can anyone confirm? Thanks

My son still gets the texts even with the touch off. They are there when he turns it back on.

Many places have free wi-fi to include McDonalds.

I agree with MsStinkerBelle.
My kids have these, and DD5 has DD17's old one, which is a classic. SHE has lots of movies on it, and in fact can't wait for Tursday and the Princess and the frog. We buy the DVD with the digital copy. It's also great for those drives to Disney!!! My DD11 has PDD-NOS, and it's great for her too.

My DD10 has PDD-NOS as well and the iPods have been a Godsend for her, especially on the Disney trips! Another reason I really had to bump up the memory is because I started buying Blu-Ray Disney movies which had the digital copy which of course goes right on her iPod Touch. We get Princess and the Frog on Thursday too!

I would go with either a 16gb or 32gb. I have an 8gb iTouch that I got a couple years ago and while I love it (it was a gift from my partner & is engraved to me) I wish I could add more memory to it. It gets used up quickly, and I only have music & a few apps on there. Just the iTouch interface takes up some of that memory, so you don't really have the full 8gb to store your content. When I plug into my iTunes it says I really have about 7.3gb to add content; the rest of the 8gb is taken up by the interface.

I would go with the mid mode (32g) for a few reasons...

First of all, it is more than just a size difference. The middle and high end models actually have a better processor or functionality - I can't remember the details, but there is a difference you may want to check out.

Also, don't think just songs. You can load that sucker up with songs, photos, apps (games) and the biggest space hog - videos. You can load up severa videos to have on the go with you. I have some software on my computer that will "shrink" down a normal dvd and format it for the ipod. I am going to load up a ton of movies for the kids to watch while we travel and for me to watch when they have gone to bed and I am stuck in a hotel room with them!

If you can afford it, I'd get the 32 instead. The 3rd gen 8 GB is really the same as the 2nd Gen. The 32 GB allows voice control and the headphones have a built in mic. You can buy it from amazon for $269 too (and may not have to pay tax on it). Also, movies take a ton of space (over 1 GB each) and the newer Disney titles on Blu Ray are including digital copies that can be used on ipod.

You can block the internet and wireless capabilities on them (password protect them) so he won't have access you don't want.

I think a 10 year old should be able to handle one properly... Of course, I just gave my three year old an 8 GB touch (so I'm probably not a good one to ask).

The reason I ask is because I have a friend who just started as a teacher in a middle school and she said they have to seize them from kids all the time because they are looking at porn on them. Most parents are unaware of the internet capability in those cases I'd imagine.

YES! I work in a middle and elementary school and we are having the same problem with laptops and ipods, any smartphones, actually. It is horrifying. I will not be allowing my kids to have this capability until they are well into their teens. Sadly, they can just google a simple word like "peanut butter" and the search engine pulls up all kinds of stuff. They innocently click and then it begins. My kids are 8, soon to be 10 and soon to be 11. I am trying as hard as I can to delay this. Early exposure to pornography often leads to earlier 'activity', if this makes sense.

I hate to say anything on someone's thread when they are merely asking a technical question, but I really feel parents are in the dark about this. Kids are very good at learning where to go online and how to cover their tracks. As a teacher and school counselor, this is one of the most disturbing trends I've seen. Kids are sexting and have WAY too much access to completely inappropriate sites. Check out chatroulette. This is what some of our students were visiting.

I probably sound like an alarmist, but frankly it is alarming!:sad2:

I bought my dd9 and dd18 8 gig touches for Christmas and both have filled them up multiple times and have to make choices as to what to put on them. I would buy the biggest one I felt comfortable with money wise. Personally if I had to buy again, I'd save until I could buy each of us the largest ones.

Apps and movies take up space quickly, and I don't like having to take lots of things off and on (and don't always carry my laptop on vacations)

Most of the kids in my daughter's acting school have the iPod Touch, even the younger ones. I've seen kids as young as 8 with them (and they belong to the kids, not the parents).

My DD is 11 and all the kids in her classes have them. She doesn't have one (yet). I'll probably be getting one for her b'day in September.

We bought the kids mp3 players. They are cheaper then the ipods and better for the youger kids. If they forget and leave them in their pockets. It just might end up in the wash.(been there, done that lol) Good luck
