Hi everyone,

Planning on buying my 10-year old an itouc for his birthday - he is picking that over a party! I'm just trying to decide between the 8g and 32g.

He is mostly going to use it for games - my husband thinks the 32g, but i'm thinking maybe the 8g and then some $$ to download games etc. I realize i also need to buy a case/cover - how much is that cost?

He will be putting music on also, but i can't imagine 7000 songs...

What do u suggest if u have one?

thanks

Why not the 16gb? I wouldn't go with the 8gb, it's sufficient but that space gets used up pretty quick. Of course the nice thing is it's easy enough to switch out but if he puts a couple movies on there he's going to start running our of space pretty quick. So I vote with your hubby or you all can compromise and go with the 16gb and give him money for games etc.

i don't see the 16gb - i only see the 8 or 32?

Actually i see it in the 2nd generation - apple sells the 16gb refurbished for 199.00 - anyone have refurbished? views?

I bought a refurbished iPod shuffle... no problems whatsoever...

However, refurb costs almost as much as new. I did it in the case of wanting to get the "old" shuffle no longer sold in stores. (Similar to if you get a 16)

Gen 2 has 16... they did away with it because it wasn't as popular.

If I were you I would get the 8. I have the 16... and I don't come close to even using 8. Ours is actually the family iPod... *everyone's* songs, photos, games, apps on it. We could have used only an 8.

I'm sure 8 would be more than enough for your 10 year old.

In other issues, you do know the iTouch has wifi internet? With a 10 year old, you may want to keep that in mind... when he is/isn't allowed to access it, etc., Because he will basically have the whole world wide web in his pocket!

Does a 10 year old need a touch? That's pretty advanced for an iPod. Why not just an 80 gig regular iPod? The touch has internet and stuff that you can't really regulate like at home.

That's why at our house, it's MOM'S! Mom can lend it to you, let you play with it, keep your music on it (each of us have our own playlist) buy you games to play, etc... But I get to decide *when* and *where* you play with it.

I don't consider myself a hoover mom, but I want to know when my kids (10, 8, 6) are on the internet and what they are searching for, or playing. I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing my kids could access the wifi after bedtime with their iPod touch...

i understand the concern w/the touch, but my son has a computer at home, and he knows he cannot go on the internet and search - he has to ask our permission b4 downloading games etc.

He would not be taking the ipod out of the house w/out us being with him. he mostly just wants the novelty of having it!

again i think he will most likely download a few games and play with that. we don't have a ds or anything like that, so it will be mostly for in the car - etc.

Most of the kids in my daughter's acting school have the iPod Touch, even the younger ones. I've seen kids as young as 8 with them (and they belong to the kids, not the parents).

My DD is 11 and all the kids in her classes have them. She doesn't have one (yet). I'll probably be getting one for her b'day in September.

As long as you are aware of what it can do.

To answer your question,

An average song is between 4 and 8 Megabytes. So thats 125-250 songs he can fit per Gigabyte.

8 Gigs - 1000-2000 songs
16 Gigs - 2000-4000 songs
32 Gigs - 4000-8000 songs

Also take into consideration games, downloads of any kind. Some games can be small like 2-4 MB and others can be larger like 40-50 or even bigger.

What will he use the iPod for, music or games or both? How many songs will he have to put on it initially? Do you buy music or download it? If you buy it, how many songs do you buy a year that will be added on to this as time goes on? It's an investment for at least 2-3 years I'd say.

Anyways, I'm rambling.

The reason I ask is because I have a friend who just started as a teacher in a middle school and she said they have to seize them from kids all the time because they are looking at porn on them. Most parents are unaware of the internet capability in those cases I'd imagine.

I won't get into the issue of if you should buy one or not...

But the new 32g is faster than the older versions. I only have the new version, so I can't compare it. But it was upgraded by Apple. That was part of my decision to buy the 32G.

referbished is just like buying new with apple... my hubby has the 3rd generation touch, my daughter has the 2nd and I have an iphone... of course i see differances with my phone but i don't notice any difference between my daughters and hubbys ipod except hers is 16 and his is 32 and hers almost seems faster than his? but maybe that is because his has so many more things on it.. hers is full to about 15g it is always wise to leave about .5 g free or you could get crashes... 8gb is WAY too small if you expect to put much on it... my daughter is only 2 and hers is full and i could easily fill a 32 i think with the tv shows i have for her and the disney movies.

by the way my daughter turns 3 this month and yes the ipod is hers a christmas presant and has been able to use an ipod by herself since she was one and has loads of great education games on it in addition to the movies/tv, her time with it is greatly regluated but it is an amazing learning tool and great on airplanes.

DD10 has a 32GB iPod Touch she got for Christmas. I went with that as her 8GB Nano was bursting at the seams (she has way too much video/audio) and a 64GB Touch would have been overkill. So far she's still got about 12GB free and it works very well for her. She uses it for her math, creative writing, looking at her Disney photos, playing games, watching movies...so much. One of the best purchases I've ever made for her.

And just to add to the discussion a bit, you CAN put a restriction on the iPod touch so the Internet/You Tube cannot be accessed. I have that on DD10's and she cannot use Safari or YouTube unless I disable the restrictions. I also have the 'location' disabled as well.

I know a mom who bought one for her 11 year old and found the child was getting on the internet when the child updated her Facebook page. I won an 8 GB from my university and my 11 year old asked if she could have it. I had to laugh because there is no way she or my younger one are getting an I-pod touch. My 17 year old has one but he is also more mature and knows that porn and sexual apps are not to be on it. He likes his for the music and movies and some of the other fun apps. He also uses it to chat with friends since he does not have texting on his cell. His school does not have wireless access either.

thanks for the feedback, again my son will not be allowed to take it to school or without me or my husband around. he knows to ask b4 going on the internet - he does not have a Facebook account.

again, he'll be using it for games, movies, music etc.!

think i might go w/the 32g - will probably buy at Costco or Bestbuy - think they are both about the same price - $269.00

or the refurbished 16g for 199.00

decisions decisions....

I just ordered the 8g refurb from Apple store for this very reason for my DD14. Although we have the wi-fi in the house it's on a power strip and it goes out at night, so there will be no midnight texting. And she knows whats appropriate and whats not as far as the internet and will be subject to random searches of her content. She's been wanting to text for too long and with her starting high school next year I thought it was time. This works out great because we don't have to pay for the texting since she only has a pay as you go phone.

One silly question...can she still receive texts even if her ipod touch isn't on? I"d think she could and they'd be there the next time she turns it on, can anyone confirm? Thanks

I say get the 32g. DD 11 has a nano that easily has 8g of just music on it. she also has about 4-5 g of movies/tv shows on it and then once you get to the game then you are already close to 16. if you can afford bigger go for it.

Go with the 32. You'd be amazed with how easy it is to fill it up. I updated to the 32 touch, because I was always re-syncing my 8g nano.

Video can fill up quickly. :lmao:

I agree with MsStinkerBelle.
My kids have these, and DD5 has DD17's old one, which is a classic. SHE has lots of movies on it, and in fact can't wait for Tursday and the Princess and the frog. We buy the DVD with the digital copy. It's also great for those drives to Disney!!! My DD11 has PDD-NOS, and it's great for her too.
