When rooms show that they're sold out but the I/O/VGT rate still shows available, does that mean when you book that you will probably get at least the categories that are still available and not lower ones?

For example, we booked VGT on a December Wonder cruise. We still have not been assigned a room but the category 7 and 6 are now sold out. Does that mean we will probably at least get a category 5 room at this point? I know the different isn't big but I'd love the nicer verandah!

thanks!

Not for sure. They could have pulled 6/7 rooms for the VGT rates. It would depend on demand of the VGT/GTY rooms that they sell. If they sell alot of them, then that will force the movement upward with upgrades. I do know that I have a lot of luck with VGT however, you are stuck with what you get. The risk for the cheaper price.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm still happy with the VGT rate because it gave us the opportunity to get a verandah room at a great price! This is our first cruise so we don't know any better and will probably be excited with any room :)

Do they usually offer the special rates right up til the end? I'm wondering about future trips...like if I should book once I see that rate (we don't plan ahead too far so these last minute deals worked well for us) or if I can wait if they're usually there til the sailing date.

depending on sales. Demand is the only reson they offer discounts. If the room above 6/7 don't sell but they are having success with the VGT sales, look for the sales to keep going right up until sail date. More than likely they have a set amount of rooms that they are willing to sell at reduce rates and then it's over.

With higher demand sail dates like the summer, I don't see any discounts. Off season are nice and there are FL, Military and KSF offers out there as well. All about demand. Any other questions. let me know.

Not alot of cruises but taking number 7 with DCL at the end of december.

When do the VGTs usually show up? Is it usually right after folks make final payments? I'm eyeing the June 2nd Bahamas cruise out of NYC - doesn't look like its selling all that well. I don't want to pay full price on this one. When would the sale fares appear (if any)?

Not sure but we booked it in September for a December cruise...I know at the time someone said around 3 months in advance, depending on sales. Not sure when it appeared for the December cruise - we weren't looking in advance, ours was a spur of the moment thing. The VGT worked out cheaper for us than the kids sail free or CA discount.

My VGT GTY 3-day showed up at around 90 days. Guaranteed Oceanview with Verandah at $400-$700 savings.

Be careful when booking those cabins, as you can't make any changes and they are non-refundable.

NancyIL is right. My recommendation is look at the details of the lowest category of the VGT (white wall, ubstruction, whatever) and understand that you will get that type of room UNLESS a little pixidust comes your way. I had a recent GTY of 5C and was upgraded to a 4B. I got more space for me and my DW, but I lost the stars because of the overhand on deck 8 of the Magic. To some, no big deal but to my wife and I we would have rather had the 5C. I called to see if I could get on deck 7, they said NO. By the way, we loved our cruise and saved a buck!

Question did they say no because there weren't any available on deck 7 or for a different reason? Were you requesting a different category on deck 7?

The said no because I purchased a GTY and that is what they wanted me to have. BY giving me the category 4, they opened up a Category 5 that would cheaper and maybe would draw someone in to purchase. That's why they have the GTY in the first place. To try to target those last minute bargain shoppers.

They most likely said no because any of those last minute IGT, OGT and VGT GTY cabins are at DCL discretion. PP got a bit of pixie dust on those rates which is rare.....but DCL won't change the cabin when finally assigned.

To refresh everyone's memory or to let people know who are not familiar with these special rates I will repost the restrictions...which are numerous.

Last-Minute Restricted Stateroom Discounts from DCL

In January 2011, Disney will begin offering a new way to save if you are flexible about your stateroom location and willing to book "last minute," meaning 21-75 days prior to departure.

When offered, new "Restricted" room categories be offered on select sailings at the discretion of Disney Cruise Line operations. If offered, here’s what you will see online:

Inside Stateroom with Restrictions (GTY IGT)

Oceanview Stateroom with Restrictions (GTY OGT)

Verandah Stateroom with Restrictions (GTY VGT)

Important details you need to know:

You will not be able to select a stateroom number or make special requests as to stateroom location. The stateroom is assigned at the discretion of Disney Cruise Line within a week of cruise departure. The only guarantee will be Inside, Outside or Verandah (based on the bookable category code listed).

Applies to new bookings only. Existing reservations cannot be modified to these new categories.

Full payment is due at time of booking. Booking holds are not permitted.

Reservation is non-refundable.

Reservation and applied payment are non-transferable.

Full legal names and birthdates for all stateroom occupants are required at time of booking.

Name changes after the reservation number is confirmed will not be permitted.

Sail date, stateroom category and cruise itinerary changes are not permitted once a reservation number is confirmed.

Not combinable with any discount or promotional offers, with the exception of $25 onboard credit for bookings made online and Disney Visa benefits.

The “Verandah Stateroom with Restrictions” category allows for a maximum of four stateroom occupants.

Restrictions and booking rules are subject to change.

I guess I was confused because you said you booked a 5C GTY versus a VGT. I know the restrictions placed on the IGT, OGT & VGT bookings. When I booked my 4A GTY for my Dream cruise this past August I was able to change my stateroom after it was assigned. I didn't like the location. BUT it was a 4A GTY NOT a VGT.

My reservation is classified as BOTH VGT and GTY.

But those restrictions do apply, you are absolutely correct. I haven't seen them (in my limited exposure here) beyond the 90 days out so you shouldn't have to worry too much about cancelling, etc. as much IMHO. In that way, it's just like other cruise line's last-minute sailing specials.

This is our first cruise; maybe I'll know better afterwards as to whether VGT GTY is the way to go in the future or not. But just like when we book at BC at WDW or other hotels, we don't go asking for specific room assignments, just a category. Why not on a cruise ship then?

(Then again, I'm just a first-time cruiser... and most likely wrong! I recognize that.)

With IGT, OGT and VGT are all GTY bookings....you can't pick a cabin assignment with those rates.

As to why specific room assignments....many people have certain preferences and favorite cabins on where they want to be on the ship...forward, mid, aft or upper or lower, port or starboard. Some do lots of research to pick a certain cabin and will book it if it is availalbe. Sometimes there are cabins within the same category that are more desirable than others.

You can't choose specifc cabins the last minute restricted stateroom discounts....some don't care about where they will end up they just wanted the cheapest price.

Hope that helps a bit.
