I never learned how to make a grilled cheese sandwich

Not sure how to do it. I mean - I've had sliced white sandwich bread since I was a kid and I practically grew up on Kraft Singles. I'd microwave them to get them to melt and have even made mac & cheese with them. I remember eating a lot of cold ham and cheese sandwiches when I was a kid.

However, I've never made a grilled cheese sandwich, although I've bought them for myself and my kid.

Any tips? I don't have a sandwich press, but I do have a toaster oven and a large flat pan with a non-stick surface.

My grill is in the oven so nice and easy to pop it under

No specialised press needed.

Soft butter your bread on both sides. Put how many slices of cheese you prefer on bread. Close sandwich and put in saute pan on medium heat. Flip when cheese begins to melt. Remove sandwich when cheese is liquid and eat. Don't forget the can of Campbell's tomato soup. If your pan doesn't seem hot enough place a salad or tea cup plate on top.

The end.

ETA: you can also toast the bread, butter it, place cheese on it and nuke at about 60% power for a minute to a minute and a half.

I just learned from DIL to toast the bread before I butter it to make a crisper, less soggy, sandwich. I only butter on the outside, then cook in a frying pan.

The trick is not to have the heat too high. I do med low. Butter the outside of bread and put cheese between and put in pan. Wait until bread is lightly toasted then flip. Remove when cheese is melty and other side is toasted. You can use any kind of cheese you like, but some melt better than others.

This is what I do. Toast the bread lightly first. I prefer cheddar, colby or another real non-processed cheese instead of American. Although growing up, my parents made them with Velveeta. :o

If you like your grilled cheese extra crunchy use mayo on the bread instead of butter. Sounds weird but it works. If you don’t have sliced cheese, shredded works well but melts faster. My favorite is cheddar with pepper jack on wheat served with tomato soup. Yum!

I went to Catholic school. I don't recall Sister Eithne insisting on Irish bread in 1st grade. And I can't for the life of me recall how I'm supposed to pronounce that name.

That's "Grilled Garlic Salt", he asked for "Grilled Cheese" (you left the cheese off). :rotfl2:

Yeah, I realized I didn’t say the cheese layer, but hoping OP wouldn’t forget that part. I’m all for salt anyway, so garlic bread could work in a pinch if you’re out of cheese ::yes::

I second this idea. Grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of Campbell’s tomato soup are a perfect combo meal for the family!

Butter your bread and put both slices butter side down in a hot pan with a piece of cheese on each slice. When the cheese starts melting use your spatula to put them together and then toast to your liking, flipping if needed.

When I make them with meat I will toss the meet inside the pan to heat it up and then put it on when the cheese starts melting and then continue as above.

I use my Breville grill but do not use the press option. Old habits. Makes things quick when you’re making 5-6 sandwiches.

I use a small frying pan. Melt butter in pan. Butter one slice of bread. Put the slice without butter down first, then cheese, then top slice with butter. I prefer to use sourdough and cheddar.
Medium heat. Flip a few times.
I am a champion grilled cheese maker. :)

These guys have the grilled cheese thing down, but are you ready to have your mind blown?

TO "plus up" your peanut butter sandwich (plain, or with jelly, or with Honey, etc), lightly toast the bread FIRST. Eat while it is still warm 💥

This!!! We always use Mayo instead of butter. It is so easy to spread as well. I used to work for the company that makes Hellmann's Mayo and that is what they of course recommend for making grilled cheese. If you want a killer easy homemade tomato soup recipe try Pioneer Woman's Sherried Tomato Soup. I use less light cream and a bit less sherry. I use an immersion blender to bring it all together...yum.

That soup has become a staple in our house! I always have the ingredients on hand to make it (I just use milk instead of cream).

I’ve done some really fancy grilled cheese in my day. I like to add tomatoes and/or avocado. I recently started trying fig jam and goat cheese. Mmmm.
