I never believed in Addonitis

So during COVID we said let’s just buy a 50 point VGF contract so we can go a few nights a year. We live in South Florida, easy drive and usually go during the week at “slower” (I know no slow times an longer). Went as soon as they opened and loved the idea of the whole DVC. Sitting at home browsing sites one night found a 50 point BLT contract and figured why not can mix and match 2 monorail resorts. Anyway with the banked points in the contracts we bought and getting some one time use points we did 6 nights at VGF and started that trip with 3 nights at the Swan paying cash so we had a 9 night trip. At the end we both looked at each other and said wow 9 nights was great and peaceful but we wish we could have done all 9 nights at VGF. Well today we just signed our closing docs on another 100 VGF points.
This is crazy how you get sucked in but so worth it. I used to read all these posts about addonitis and say that’s crazy. Now I’m a believer

We caught the 1BR variant. It has been costly to cure. I am not sure if we are fully over it.
I am fearful of this variant. I hear there’s no turning back once you catch this so I’m going to avoid it as long as I can. But maybe Disney’s strategy is to pixie dust DVC members one of the trips and then we’re doomed.

This is the one we caught. Stayed in a 1 BR to use up a ton of banked points from 2019 in 2021 and came home having to buy another contract to get a 1 BR for my long trip every year now. My shorter trip is solo and in a studio, but I have added on to that one too. The addonitis is very real!

1brs are DVC crack cocaine.

We made the enormous blunder of staying in a VGF 1br with our buy-in double points. We were immediately addicted and only later realized we were now into the vicious borrow/every-other-year cycle.

This year, we added 200 points to cure that for good. It is only curable by buying more points. ::yes::

I sent DH our monthly budget for his upcoming retirement finance meeting and he said to me, "Do we really need all these points?", because he finally seemed to realize our Dues have increased after 3 bouts of addonitis. First of all we only have 345 points and second, not even factoring the different sized villas, in 2022 we'll spend 14 nights in DVC villa's so do the math and tell me if it's worth it. Now factor in that 3 of those nights were in Jambo's 3Br with the savannah view and pool table, which meant very little sleep time for the progeny, and remember we paid $501/n (inclusive of taxes and fees) at the Swan. Oh.

Yep, we just bought 200 points at RIV last January. Already setting up to get another 100 there, then looking towards the Poly expansion in 2024. The struggle is real.

Congrats!

Some background: I was a DL CM for 12 years in high school, college, and some post-grad. Both my sisters were CM's (one still is after 30+ years) as were my son and my dad after he retired (they used to love grey haired guys on steam trains and Main Street vehicles). Grew up in Anaheim, so there was never a real desire to visit WDW until business took me to Florida about 5 years ago.

We started out staying at moderates like Coronado Springs and POR on CM discounts (they don't offer discounts too often on luxuries, at least few that I've seen), until we grabbed a CM discount on a cash stay at OKW in a 2BR three years ago. Game over. Our DVC experience was spoiled from day one with the bar set at 2 bedroom villas. We did an initial buy-in at SSR with 150 direct in 2020, right when the pandemic hit, and have added on 6 times (mostly resale, but a handful more direct as a buffer) now to get to where we can enjoy 2BR's for 2+ weeks per year.

Won't be adding on at DLT as I've stayed at DLH probably a hundred times over my 58 years here on earth, but Aulani is starting to look good (like many in So Cal, Hawaii was our annual vacation destination and there really are parts of Oahu that I truly enjoy like the North Shore/Hale'iwa, Kualoa, Kailua, etc.).
