and need some help! I had the big idea today that I needed to start walking again! Last summer I was up to 3 miles about 6 days a week. I've been looking on here for ways to get going again. I have read so many inspirational stories. I just feel so overwhelmed with information and I don't really know where to start. I would like to work my way up to running and maybe just maybe try one of the Disney Marathon's one day :thumbsup2. I live in Lexington, Ky and I really don't know anyone here to group with. I do much better with a buddy system! My husband has no interest in walking, running or working out. I live right across the street from a school that has a track. So I can go up there and walk. If you all have any suggestions, I'm all ears :rotfl:.

I'm in Ky also, Bowling Green. I train most of the time by myself and wear an iPod with good motivational songs. Songs like the Tim Mcgraw's "How bad do you want it". Garth Brooks, "Standing outside the fire", the theme song for special olympics. Trace Adkins, "Untamed".

I have walkers that met me on wed morning for a group walk some come from as far as Nashville and Portland Tenn.

You can stay with the walking and never move to running if you don't want to. I walk all my races and a lot of the wishers on the events and comp section do also.

Thanks! Now I just need to set up some mp3's and get going! Starting out this morning. Hope all goes well! :thumbsup2

I too do this by myself. It is kind of lonely, but I use the time as one of introspection and appreciation. Also, I use music to help things along some and vary the tunes.

I would recommend that you review a program to get you started. You do not need to run and can do any version of moving along as long as you get in those steps. That said, there is the Couch to 5K program many will follow to start. It involves running, as I mentioned, you do not need to run. You can change the weeks to suit you. That is, if you need to repeat, do so.

For many beginners, I would also recommend the book Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. He also has authored Courage to Start and you will find some motivational info there.

The key to doing this successfully is to find a program, go to library, book store or wherever to find different models that you could use to get you increasing your steps as you begin to do this.

I started out just putting one foot in front of the other, then looked for the program that I thought would fit me.

Exciting times ahead for you! I would love to hear of your progress. Feel free to join in on the Events/Competition side of WISH where you will find many of us at a variety of levels training for one event or another, or just training.
