What about "These Are Days" by 10,000 Maniacs? (The song was released in 1992, so your sister would have been in her mid-twenties when it was popular.)

I also like Billy Joel's "She's Got a Way," but I guess it was intended more as a romantic song.

I second the previous posters, who suggested "100 Years" (Five for Fighting) and IZ's "Over the Rainbow" (Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole).

Ultimately, though, the songs that will have the greatest meaning are those that your sister associates with happy memories -- like someone else suggested (above).

Oh, I re-read the post and noticed that your sister is a big disco fan. Have you considered any funky instrumental music from that era -- like "A Fifth of Beethoven" (Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band) and "The Hustle" (Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony)? Or, what about Barry White's "Love's Theme"? 'Kinda schmaltzy, but definitely fun '70s stuff.

Can you think of any appropriate songs from the Disco era? She really likes disco music. I was thinking about "Brick House".

Does she fit that description? That's really quite something to say about your sister?

since it's a 40 birthday..."Stayin' Alive"- The Bee Gees

Just don't use "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang. No one really likes that song.
