Our Christmas this year is going to be a bit smaller than usual. The kids are only getting a couple gifts each. There is going to be one "big" gift for the entire family. I am buying tickets for the four of us to see Disney on Ice.

So, how do I present them? I was going to put them in a decorated envelope and put it on the tree, but I want to do something more fun. Maybe a treasure hunt??? My husband doesn't know I'm doing this and I want him to take part in unwrapping/finding, whatever. I'm not sure he will go for a treasure hunt. Maybe I could have the kids looking but have my husband open it??? I'm a bit stumped. I'm not sure what kind of clues to use? Should there be a small present with each clue? If so, what should it be? Any help/ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I am so excited about this. I told my mother that I was buying tickets, but "I'm not doing it like Dad did!!" When I was little - maybe 7??? - I had an envelope on the tree from "Santa". In it was money and a note telling me the money was to go see Dorothy Hamill with Winnie the Pooh on ice in Hershey. My dad used the money and I never got to go. :sad2: So, this is huge for me!! And I know the kids will love it.

TIA for any help!!

I think that sounds like a fun gift! Do your kids ice skate? I am thinking you could include a family day at the ice rink in your treasure hunt.

Santa could leave a note with clues. Like a treat for each letter Disney On Ice.
D - donuts for breakfast
I S - family ice skating day
N- Note with a few hints like a picture of the Characters skating
E-
Y

Have to put DD to bed, let me think, I'll be back.

Thank you so much for responding!!! :woohoo:

My daughter absolutely loves to ice skate and likes watching it even more. We bought her skates for Christmas two years ago when we lived in Chicago. We had access to an indoor skating rink then. I was so excited - I had never seen one in person. I grew up skating on the frozen pond and keeping my fingers crossed it was frozen enough!! :rotfl: We have since moved back to my hometown in the middle of Nowhere, Pennsylvania. I'm glad to be near family, but there is absolutely nothing around here - especially not skating rinks (except the roller skating rink!!).

We are driving an hour to get to the town where this will be held. The arena it's in belongs to the minor league hockey team. I don't believe they have open ice, but I could be wrong.

Anyway...

I love your idea of using the letters. I will have to think of some more ideas. Thanks for your help!!

(PS - my kids are 14 - son - and almost 7 - daughter - if that helps any.)

What about a few little gifts that lead up to the tickets?
Try the Dollar Store for little skating figures
Hats, Gloves, Scarfs,

or since you have to drive a long way, you could make up a big floor map? And have the fun dollar tree items as your landmarks. This might be something you could do without your DH knowing so that he could participate too.

Put some water in a 9X13 pan and freeze it. Once frozen, add some Disney figures on top of the ice. Put the tickets in an envelope and tape the envelope to the bottom of the pan. Buy some hat, gloves, scarves etc... and do a little scavenger hunt in the house to find those items. The last item will be the Disney Characters on ice. You could stick a little sign in the ice when it's almost frozen but soft enough to get the toothpick in there. Use a small piece of card-stock paper glued to a toothpick. The sign could read, "Danger. This ice is for professionals only -- check the bottom side of the "rink" for safety instructions." Then tell them to check the bottom of the pan to find the envelope with the tickets.

Thank you so much for the ideas!! I love them - especially the frozen pan of water!! My daughter already has a bunch of plastic princess figurines. They would work well!

Thank you, again, so much!! :goodvibes

Oh my gosh, this is adorable. What a cute idea!!!

Totally love IDoDis's idea!

Along with hats and scarves you could include a lighty up toy for your DD. They always sell them at the shows and they are :scared1: expensive. Most carnival supply places will have the same ones for less.

That's a great idea, too!! I love you people!! :worship:

I just bought the tickets!! :woohoo: They didn't have any in the price range I wanted for the day ad time I wanted, so I picked the opening day and got better seats at $4.00 less per ticket!! :yay: I am sooooo excited!!!! I am going to give the tickets on Christmas day. We will be going on January 2nd!! At least we won't have to wait forever to go and the kids are still on Christmas break.

Thank, you, once again, sooooo much!!

Great ideas!

As you mentioned missing an ice rink, I just wanted to add: when I was growing up, we always made an ice rink in our own back yard. I think we used 2x4's and a camping tarp. You can probably google instructions these days. We spent hours on that "rink," and had so much fun. If you have the space, this could be an added, inexpensive gift.

I have thought about that and asked my husband a couple weeks ago if we could do it. We have the room, but I'm not sure where we would put the water once we were done. We live right in town and I don't want to flood any of the neighbors' yards. ;)

Plus, the other concern I have is the temperatures here. As I said, we are in Pennsylvania. It gets cold here, but we have alot of freezing then thawing the next day - or within a few days. For example, Monday night, it was 22 degrees. Tuesday night it was 42 degrees. Yesterday morning, it was almost 50. Today, it's 27 degrees and freezing rain. It's crazy, I tell ya!!

This is the one I use for 4th of July. It is soooo easy!!! We call it cake although I guess it really doesn't have any cake in it?!

Line a 9 x 13 pan with ice cream sandwiches
pour chocolate fudge on top of the ice cream sandwiches
put (partially thawed) cool whip on top of that
freeze
right before serving sprinkle crumbled oreo's on top
