My assignment is:
Completez les dialogues avec son, sa ou ses.

-C'est l'apareil-photo de Marc?
-Out, c'est ... appareil-photo.

Is it sa because l'apareil photo is feminine or is it son because Marc is masculine?

Thanks for any help!

No help here. BUT last night I was supposed to "help" DS13 study for his first test in French I. I opened Chapter 1. No English anywhere in sight! How/what was I supposed to help him study? (I DID have French I...in 1973!!!)

Good luck!

My guess is ca since it refferes directly to the Photo.

My daughter who is in her 5th year of French says that the answer is "son" because you can't have "sa" before a word starting with a vowel for pronunciation reasons.

Well, to throw out another opinion, lol. My son who is also in his 5th year says the feminine or masculine of articles (in this case the camera) doesn't change so it is sa but since the word begins with a vowel it would be "s'appareil-photo". I tried to argue that Marc was a boy however he reminded me that both dog and cat in french do not change from masculine/feminine regardless of the actual sex of the animal.

Good luck!

I checked with DH (he's been doing the French thing for nearly 30 years:teeth: ) It's son

HTH!!

I called several friends and eventually found it in the book, I did the son, because apparaille-photo is masculine *whoops* but you direct it at the noun, not the person I guess.

Oh yeah, that sounds right. I could usually speak or write french appropriately, but I didn't always understand the grammer rules behind it. I just knew it sounded right. :p

ETA: It makes sense because I (as a female) would say "c'est mon appareil-photo."

As a fellow french student, I wish you luck!

I'm terrible at the language. I can read it decently, but speaking, understanding, and writing have yet to come to me.

If you really want to get it right, go to www.dictionary.com put in the whole thing in English and it will translate it for you in French. I use it many times when I need to send home notes to Hatian or Spainish students. The only caution is you need to know the language to some extent because English does not always translate to the same word in the foreign language.

It's son because it belongs to Marc (who is obviously masculine...)

Bienvenue! J'mappelle Cecile!
I am in my second year of french- you are correct, it goes with the gender of the thing not the person. If marc had a calculator (which is fem.) you would still use the fem. article, not masc. because of marc. Good Luck with the rest of the stuff!! I can read and figure stuff out and sometimes I can understand when hearing it, but writing and figuring out gramar is another story!!
ciao! :)

I have a degree in French. Son is the correct choice and it has nothing to do with Mark's gender. If a noun begins with a vowel, then son will automatically be used as the possessive pronoun. The same is true for mon and ton. If the noun began with a consonant, then the noun's gender dictates whether son or sa is used. If the possessor is plural, then ses is used.

Well, I'm glad to know my daughter was correct ;)
