I have 2 more years of school left but i am plannign on being a child life specialist. Right now i volunteer in the child life department at mattel childrens hospital and I absolutely love love love it.
I had thought about nursing but the more time i have spent in teh hospital as a patient adn as a volunteer, the mor ethat i realize there is no way i coul dever do what they do.
I was just in the hospital for 5 days and nurses still amaze me all the time. The wya that the hospital i go to is set up is that there is a cluster of 4 rooms for each nurse and there is a nursing station/desk right outside of those rooms. I had the same day shift nurse for 3 days and i swear she did not sit for 12 hours. she was constantly in adn out of rooms, giving meds, ont eh phone with doctors, the lab, doing paperwork and in between she woul dalways pop into my room at least a few times during her shift to talk. Nurses do anything adn everything. They do more than the doctors do in teh hospitals. They are the ones who literally keep you alive. They are the ones who check on you, they are the ones who call teh doctors if you or they have any concerns. They need to be able to stand up to doctors who behave like children and who have massive egos. Nurses are extraordinary people.
My nurse and i were talking and she was like, "I get yelled at , thrown up on, cursed at, bit, hit, kicked and I get paid like crap...but i wouldnt trade it for anything"....thats the attidtude you need if you want to become a nurse.
