Yes this is a goofy question, but I am wondering about the bathroom fans in a 1BR at OKW. We are bringing our 5-month old DD and she is accustomed to sleeping with a small fan running as "white noise". Can anyone tell me about the fans in the bathrooms, are they really loud or pretty normal? Do they even have fans? I am assuming so, but I can't remember as it wasn't something I paid attention to last time! Can the fan be running without the light? I am planning to bring the fan from home but being able to use the bathroom fan will save a lot of suitcase space! Thanks in advance!

The bedroom would have a ceiling fan if that would be enough noise for the baby. The exhaust fan would be pretty far away from the sleeping area at OKW. You'd have the tub area between the toilet/shower area and the sleeping area.

From what I remember the fan noise is normal, not particularly loud.

As stated prior, the bath/shower area is far from either the bedroom or LR with the sleeper sofa. Maybe you could set up the crib in the "spa" area near the hot tub since that would be right outside the bathroom door. There's plenty of room near the sink.

Thanks for the quick replies. I think we could either set up the crib in the bedroom near the spa and open the shutters, or else in the bathroom near the sink.

Given the arrangement of the room, I don't think that the crib would fit between the bed and the opening without touching the bed and blocking in the bed's occupants. It would probably fit OK in the bathroom, but the tub and the step to the tub do jut out into the room, so it might block more floor than you expect.

The bathroom fans at OKW have preset timers that automatically shut thenselves off after the time expires. To turn them on again you'd need to manually turn the fan to the "off" position and then "on" again.

You'd be better off bringing your own "white noise" generator. We always turn the blower fan to "on" instead of "auto" - that will provide some background noise and it does help minimize exterior sounds from inside the room.

Maybe you could tape record the soiund of the fan and just bring a tape player.

That's a great idea. Better yet: record the sound to a CD and have it repeat all night.

We never travel without our cheapo little noise machine. Ours includes a selection called "white noise" that is basically a fan sound. I personally like the "ocean." We crank it up and I always say that people in adjoining rooms will dream that they are on the sinking Titanic.

Ours is a Norelco. Sharper Image makes pricier ones.

and I think it has 8 options of noise. I ALWAYS remember to bring batteries as we buy them in bulk @ Costco.

We have flown with it & kept the batteries in their original package.

HTH.

Doc,
If I recall the bathroom fan switches at OLD Key West have 3 positions: Off in the middle, the timer setting as you stated when the switch is moved down and always on when the switch is turned up. Maybe we need some in-depth investigation done.

sraytay is right! We just returned yesterday and the fan switch goes down for the timer, off i nthe middle, and up for constant running. I don't think it is loud enough though to be heard in the bedroom.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I really like the idea of recording the fan to tape or cd and then just play it on repeat. However the wife is worried this won't work, and we don't have adequate time to test it (we leave in 6 days) so I think we're just going to take the fan. It is small, only 8" diameter, so it won't take up too much space in the suitcast.
For Steve and anyone else interested, I will post my in-depth investigation of the bathroom fan switch after I get back.

Hmmm- the one in our room this weekend turned itself off (timer) in the up position, was off in the middle position and nothing happened in the down position.

I'm thinking maybe the bathroom fans at OKW need to be checked. We had a fan in the toilet/shower/sink area that did not turn itself off this time like previous units. We tried the fan switch in both the up & the down position - neither time did it turn off by itself; we left it on for awhile while we were in the unit. The middle position was off.

The fan in the jacuzzi/sink bathroom worked, but didn't turn itslef off either - I cannot remember if it ever did or not.

I need White Noise to sleep and always use a Homedics Sound Spa. It's small enough to pack in my suitcase and runs on 4 AA batteries. You can usually get them at Target for under $20. Life is much happier for me when I bring it on vacation with me.

We can't sleep without our white noise machine. We've had trips where we forgot it and tried to duplicate the sound with television or radio static (doesn't work) or the bathroom fan. Many hotels have the fans hooked into the light switch so the light stays on if the fan is on. Not exactly condusive to a good night's sleep!

We buy our noise machines at Target. They're $12 and can be found in the section where they have "spa" stuff like a foot massager, etc. Definitely worth the money-- we Love ours!
