I need high temperature help, please!

This is for anyone who didn't read my chicken pox thread. DD is 11 and has a terrible case of chicken pox. She started running a temperature and breaking out Sunday night. She has a temperature off and on and each time she breaks out some more. By now she almost has pox on top of pox.

Tonight her temp went up to 104 +. It scared me! I now have it down to 101. Any ideas? I'm planning to get up and down all night to give her pills as I don't want it to get back up there.

Poor baby is miserable. Every time the temp goes away she feels pretty good. Just wish it would be gone so she could start to get better.

Any advice is welcome.

Merry, I understand, when my DD was younger she regularly ran temps of 106 or higher when she was ill, and it IS scary!

My pediatrician recommending alternating doses of children's Tylenol and Motrin, along with tepid baths when she had the highest of temps. As long as the temps come down with the meds that is a good sign that they are working, even though your daughter is not totally comfortable.

I got chicken pox at age 10 and it is much worse, it seems, for older kids. Hope she feels better soon!

Okay, I have some Motrin. Should I give it next time instead of the tylenol? You just alternate every 4 hours? Thanks for the advice.

Yes, Motrin works MUCH better than Tylenol in reducing fevers, I would definitely give that to her next and then if she still has a fever four hours after that dose do the Tylenol then. The Motrin should keep the fever down for at least six hours, though.

my DD just went through the high fever thing last week.......Michelle is right....alternate the motrin and tylenol. Morgan's temp was up to 106.2 at one point....very scary....but she is known for high fevers....

Well, the usual, tepid/cool bath, alcohol bath, little clothing (which she probably already has), cool washcloths for the forehead while sleeping/resting. They make strips of those also (Be Cool strips) that you can buy. They stick to the forehead and, they are REALLY cold!

Sometimes, they say a fever has to run its course also. Best you can do, is make her as comfortable as possible.

Oatmeal baths & Calomine dreams for your DD.

She doesn't want to eat anything, but Cherry Coke tastes extra good right now. I've been pouring it into her as fast as she can drink it. I've also coaxed her to drink some apple juice, but it's not as big a hit as the pop. LOL!

I'm all set with my Motrin for 1:00. It's my birthday this morning, and I can tell it's going to be an interesting one for me. I'm liable to feel really , really old after hopping in and out of bed to check on her all night tonight.

Motrin is the brand name (which always costs more) and Ibruprofen is the generic drug name. If you want to save money buy the generic brand of ibruprofen.

The Motrin worked! Thank you, thank you! She was cool when I woke her at 5:00, so I'll wait and check her again at 7:00 - after 6 hours have passed. The sweetie tried to sing to me.

Just so you know...my 11yo dd went thru the flu a couple of weeks ago and he said for her to take 2 Motrin pills instead of 1. She weighs 91 lbs.

Motrin really is a lifesaver. My kids are taking turns with the high fever/cough virus and it makes them feel normal pretty quick!

Not to scare you, but do keep a watch on the spots for infection. We had a friend whose daughter had one get infected and they almost lost her-scared me enough to get my kids the shot which I had been resisting. She lost a lot of tissue and some muscle in her skin around the area, but she did survive. I think sometimes we reduce fevers so much, that we are not aware of infection.

Now I'm nervous about infection. How would I tell? She only has a few that have popped. They don't look any more angry than the others, to my knowledge. Would you guys tell the doctor that she is still running a temp off and on? Every time she has the temp she gets more pox, so I know it couldn't be just from infection.

MerryPoppins - I hope your DD is feeling better soon. Chicken Pox at that age is no fun. If I were you I would give the Drs office a call just to let them know what is going on - it can't hurt.

Letting the dr office know is a good thing so they can chart it for you and put it on with her shot records. I do hope she if starting to feel a bit better.

When my dd would spike fevers and not want to eat much, doc always told me no matter what it was give it to her. If she wanted ice cream at 3am - let her have it. It was the point of making sure something was on her stomach to combat the meds she was taking.

Hope she feels better soon and hope you can get some rest soon!!!
