I need help with my PS3 desperately !!

My son got his PS3 today and he has tried to set it up himself. We are plugged in and switched on the main power switch at the back. At the on/off switch we get a solid red bar. When we press and hold this it turns green only for a few seconds then flashes intermittently red. We think he may have turned off the system using the main power switch at the back when its not been in the stand by state, could this have damaged it? Our book doesn't tell us what a flashing red light is.

We can't get a solid green light. Thanks for any help.

Sue the only thing I can suggest is to google "flashing red light PS3 " and that may give you some answers

Sorry to be the bearer of bad new but I believe a flashing red light means it is a faulty system. Is it a new system? - if so it should be under warranty...
