I need help with getting rid of fleas

I think I have fleas. Ok, I know I have fleas. I bathe my dogs, put that advantage stuff on them and make them wear a flea collar but they still brings fleas in the house. I called up an exterminator and they are going to charge me over 300.00 to do my house and small yard and that will only be with a 30 day guarantee!! I feel like there is someway I can get rid of this problem myself without getting rid of my dogs. (small maltese and cocker spaniel).
So, has anyone tackled their own flea problem themselves? I have them inside and out and I need somethings I can use that are safe for kids and pets. Thanks so much!!!

I know that years ago when we had a bad problem at my parents, they smoke bombed the house. Ask your vet what he/she recommends.

There is a product you can pick up at your local "feed" store called
diatamachish earth (its spelled wrong but your feed store owner will know what it is). This is a harmless white powder like substance that you can put on your pets as well as your rugs and yard. It takes about three or four days to notice a difference but it does kill the fleas (by cutting them in half...but again it is completly harmless to pets and children...you can even eat the stuff...okay so you wouldn't eat it but if you get some in your mouth like a cat might by licking themselfs, it is completly harmless) Shake it on your rugs lightly and don't vacuum for a few days (although when you do it will kill the fleas in your vacuum bag as well) you may need to reapply but it will take care of the problem and cost a FRACTION of what the bug killer wants to charge you. Simply take a handful and rub on your pets to take care of the fleas on them. We live in the country and my husband use to work at a feed store and this stuff is like magic!!!
