I have been trying everything I can think of to figure out how to do the eyelets in tags.. But everyone that I do the back of the eyelet is messes up. I dont know what I am doing wrong but I cant get it to turn out correctly and I know they can because Ive seen it..

I have 2 tools that I use one to drill the hole, the other I place the tip in the back of the eyelet and then use a hammer to knock it down flat. I've tried a hard and soft surface ans still its crummy. I bought the exact tools etc that the lady at the scrapbook store told me to..

Does anyone have any helpful hints or ides to help me master this simple looking part of scrapping???

Well it sounds like you are doing everything correctly. The only thing I can think of is if you are using really cheap eyelets??? I know the first ones I bought in 2001 from Magic Scraps were horrible to set! I thought it was just me until I bought some from Making Memories, they set so easily!

Here's a video of how to set an eyelet, but it sounds like you already are doing it correctly???

Thanks Cass!

The video was great and it is exactly what I am doing :( Maybe its the eyelets, I bought the first ones from the scrapbook store and the second ones from Walmart. I will check on ebay to see if I can find some better ones.

Of all the eyelets I have I like the ones from Wal-Mart the best. I've ordered numerous eyelets over the Internet and some work better than others.

I did, however, have to go out & buy the universal setter in addition to the one-size-fits-most from the toolkit. (I use the Making Memories tools.) I had some that were 3/16" that just wouldn't work with the one size tool - although some do.

Then more recently I got some flat-topped ones that weren't given a size when I ordered them. I'm sure they must be the 1/16" size - there was no way the one size tool would work on those!

From my experience with these tools, the harder the surface I use the better off I am. Some eyelets set fine on my card table if I do it in the corner - right over the leg. But others won't work there - I have to use a small wooden table that DD had when she was little. Again, using the area right over the leg seems to work best.

Then, when all else fails....I hammer the back a couple times to flatten the messed up "daisy". :rotfl:

OK - I just watched the video. She says pound the heck out of it[/I] but then only taps it 3 times. I have to say that I only have one type of eyelet (very, very thin metal) that sets like that! Usually I really do "pound the heck out of it!" Maybe 6 or 7 times & hit much harder than it looks like she is. :confused3

all eyelets are made differently. some flatten out on the back and some split in either quarters or a 5-6 pointed star looking mess.

that being said, it really depends on what the eyelets are made of. if they are made of alluminum (doodle bug ones set like buttahhhhhh) or i don't know what metal mm uses, but they are tougher to set. the extreme eyelets by creative imaginations are darned near impossible to set unless you clip the shank before hand with wire cutters.

kat disney...what does your eyelet look like on the back??? is that the problem? or they just aren't setting at all?

as piratesmate said, your work surface really helps...the harder the surface, the easier the set (if it sets at all..on the softer tables). i have one of those lifetime tables that you can get from sam's or costco, and eyelets really don't set on those tables...until i purchased one of these....

embellishmats

for a measily $5.00 for a piece of plastic, it does wonders!!! i love it, and can set an eyelet anywhere...

Kathy, what color eyelets do you need? Let me know and I will be glad to send you some. Just tell me what color and how many.

Like Piratesmate said I will hammer the back of the eyelet to flatten it. Is this for the swap? If so, remember that once it's in someone's scrapbook no one will see the back anyway so it will be fine as long as it looks good on the front. Just my opinion. I wouldn't mind!

using the mickey eyelets from wdw.

this is what i found out while using those...

i have the mm instant setter and i used that to set them. well, i found that if you used the cone shaped setting tip, the front of it didn't get mangled (bent, and made paint crack) then after i set it 3 times (3 pushes on the setter) i used the regular tip to flatten it out more.

sometimes when you are using a shaped eyelet, you have to try one first on a scrap paper to see what it looks like...i wish i had done that when i did my first mickey one on my cj!!!

This is good to know, as that is my problem with the mickey eyelets, they are the only ones I really have trouble with.

Okay, this is going to sound really, really, really weird but I couldn't get my eyelets to turn out correctly when I was using the tool so I took a Phillip's head screwdriver that wouldn't fit into the eyelet and then tap it with a hammer. I can generally tap it once and have the eyelet back split into about three sections, then roll the driver around a little so the flaps go against the paper. It has been the smoothest eyelet thing I have seen yet. :confused3 Whateva works!

I agree that its prob the eyelets-

The walmart ones suck. I don't know about the other ones but def try either Doodlebug and MM-

I got some from Oriental Trading that are a Pain to set also- I'll stick to name brands :)

If ya dont get some before I mail the LP swap- I'll send ya a variety

Thank you all so much for your input.. The problem is they set fine on the front but the backs are all messed up. They look crappy and I feel horrible sending something for a swap that looks icky when I know it can be done ..lol.. I think thats the biggest issue Im having is I know they work.. Im wondering if the tool I have is to big.

DH has even tried it out and lemme tell ya I could own stocks in the eyelet indusustry with how many we have ruined.

I did look at the eyelets I bought from the scrap store and they are creative memories..

Thanks em I'd appreciate it so I can see what works and what dont..I WILL get it someday

I have trouble with the fronts looking horrible....all squished and such, sort of off kilter too....maybe i will try a different brand. I have been just punching holes and going without eyelets as they are too much of a pain.

katdisney...

don't worry about what the backs look like, because they ...

1. will be on the underneath side and once used, nobody sees them
2. all of ours look the same
3. if it bothers you that bad for a swap, take a scrap piece of paper and put it on the back over the eyelets.

i just did an experiment...

i used my mm instant setter on these, with the different setting tips...

eyelets.jpg

eyelet1.jpg

from left to right...

1. the disney eyelet
2. doodlebug i-lets (as they call them)
3. random 3/16 eyelets (maybe purchased in sewing section...dritz)
4. impressrubberstamps.com eyelets
5. mm eyelets

i did 2 sets of each using the different setting tips...here is what i learned...

while the mickey one set best with the cone shaped one, the others did not...all i can say is wow!!! what a difference it made to use the other setting tips (as opposed to the cone). and the mm instant setter even set it with 1 push!!! i too didn't like it messy, but i got over that, and now that i see how easy it is with the silver splitting tip, i am now a fan of that. also, with the silver tip, it appears to have a better grip on the paper.

that's my experiment for the day....hope it helps somebody.

ok, i promise, this is my last post for this subject...

MomOf2DisneyKids, and everybody else...

there are tons of eyelet setters out there...and you are going to learn that you either love them or you hate them. i could've saved alot of money if i would've just tried them first...i have a bunch of them...i have the pc silent setter, the original mm ones, doodlebug ones, the set i got from impressrubberstamps.com (which is my favorite if i want to use all those tools still...), and the mm instant setter.

i have heard good and bad about the karen foster click it, but have never tried it my self....if you want to know about that, i suggest you go to 2peas and do a search for threads about that.

pc silent setter...it works wonderfully with the eyelets it comes with, but let me tell you, this is work!!! you literally have to use your body weight to push on this...and sometimes i ripped the paper...good thing i was only experimenting with this...some people love it...i am half and half, but leaning towards lower half on this one...

oldies but goodies...still work great for me...just wack away and get out that frustration!!!

mm instant setter...this one is awesome, but it is a little hard on the hand (or maybe i squeezed it too hard...have tendency to do this) it sets most eyelets beautifully and with one push...however it still takes 3-4 to set mm ones...i've heard that they have made them with softer metal, but i have so many old ones, i have yet to try new ones.

my best advice is try them at an lss or if a friend already has them before you buy. then you can make an educated purchase. i need to learn how to do this, as i am a tool o holic and i have to have/try it all.

I also agree that it is just the different style eyelets. Some of my eyelet settings come out fabulous and others are so mangled you don't know what it is! LOL I thought maybe it was my cheapy eyelet setter so I went out and bought the PC Silent Setter, which I love, but it does the same thing to some eyelets as well.

Cass, thanks for the video!! :)
