I need eyeglasses - please help quickly!

Here's the story - my current eyeglasses broke and I can't see. I need to go in the morning and find a new pair. I want something lightweight, sturdy, easy to care for, and somewhat inconspicious. My current pair was a semi-rimless, hingless style and I loved them. I'm thinking of choosing a rimless style this time but I need to know from those of you with experience with them if they are sturdy despite their fragile appearance. If you don't like them, what do you recommend instead. Cost is a definate issue - I don't want to spend more than $200 - $250. I plan to get contacts, but I don't want to decide on that in a pinch like this - I want to be able to take my time, so they are not an option right now. Besides, I will still need a backup pair of eyeglassses if I get contacts.

I have rimless, and they are NOT sturdy. I'm constantly readjusting them on my face because they shift very easily.

Hi... am an optician and I wear this type of frame myself. They are VERY sturdy, and oh so comfortable! I've worn this pair for over 6 months and haven't even had to adjust them.

I highly recommend the Silhouette brand, they were the original and use very high quality materials. There are others that are good too but to get quality you will spend in the $175 to $250 range for that type of rimless frame. I would avoid any frames named after people, generally speaking the quality just isn't as good... with the exception of Calvin Klein. If you can shop at Sam's or Costco and get a Silhouette brand you may get a bit better price. But you can test the sample frame by giving it a gentle twist. If the frame comes back to the original shape and the lenses are okay it should be a sturdy frame. If the "fake" lens cracks when you do this, don't even consider the frame. If the store is selling quality merchandise this shouldn't freak them out at all, because unlike a frame with metal or plastic all the way around this type of frame is made to "give" with stress.

Also be sure you use the type of lens recommended usually "high index" regular plastic will be too heavy in most Rx and polycarbonate will crack too easily where it it drilled to attach to the frame.

I think you also need to consider your prescription. I was told the last time I got new glasses that because my prescription is strong that the lenses would probably have been too thick for the rimless. I normally wear contacts, but do need a pair of glasses for when I take out my contacts, which with the Night/Day lensese is only twice a month. I would go with a semi-rimless one myself. I would be so afraid that the rimless ones would break because there isn't much there holding the glasses together.

If you are thinking about contacts, go for it. Your eye doctor should be able to help guide you in selecting the brand/type that works for you. I thought I knew what kind of lenses worked best for me, but my eye doctor recommended the Focus Night and Day and I love them. Prior to that I had been wearing the Acuvue 2's which were good and I liked them, but I think I prefer the Night/Day ones better. I just ordered some Focus Dailies though to take with us to Florida so I don't have to worry about taking them out after swimming to clean them, etc.

If you've never worn contacts before they normally put you through some contact lense training. A lot of doctors will start you out with only wearing them for like 2 hours, take them out for 2 hours, put them back in, etc and each day the time increases until you are wearing them for the full day. Definitely speak to your eye doctor about contacts though if you are interested.

Go for the sem-rimless and ask your doctor about contacts.

Thanks for the help! I've been told in the past that my prescription is suitable for rimless if I want. I do need an exam but I still see quite well with my current prescription, so it either hasn't changed or has changed very little. I wore contacts in the past but had a small bump form on the surface of my eye where the edge of my contact hit. I used Predforte drops but it didn't help and I eventually gave up and stopped wearing contacts. I'm don't want to put all of that money into contacts again and find out that I can't wear them. I would still have to buy a pair of back-up glasses anyway, so I'm starting there and will consider the contacts in a couple of months, especially since I can't shell out all of this money at once and DH needs new glasses too.

I have the Silhouette brand and love them! They are very flexible, however, so you can't wear them clipped onto the neckline of your shirt, etc. It's better to put them in the case anyway, when they're not in use. I even have prescription Silhouette sunglasses, that I love, except for the frames, which are smallish and not in style, what with everyone wearing the huge sunglasses. Thanks to everyone for responding. I ended up going with semi-rimless because I can see the nosepiece on the rimless styles and that really bothered me. I'm trying transitions lenses for the first time - I hope that works out for me. I can never wear contact lenses again due to that little bump I mentioned - it's now a large scar. I'm a little disappointed, but at least I know.
