I need a whole new brake system UPDATED

 Just had front brakes/rotors done, which was @ $300.

I'd have :faint: if I'd heard the amount you just used.

I would get a 2nd and 3rd estimate from several other respected shops. A thousand is a lot of money

Dont feel bad, we had to replace the whole engine in my eclipse. It had to sit for 3 weeks until we had enough money to fix it, which was 1750. The best thing to remember is it can always be worse...Hope it works our well for you.:(

I just dished out $270.00 for my rear brakes last Wednesday....had to dig into my "Disney" savings! ( ) Then on Thursday while I was working, I fell and sprained my Knee!
Now I'm out of work,(I'm a waitress, so I need my knees!) I could use the $270.00 to pay some other bills and now I can't even drive my car!
(I know...Whoa is me!....and yes I do have cheese & crackers to go with my WINE!! LOL)

As above posters stated....get another opinion...that price is just nuts!

DH has a real pet peeve about what shops charge for brakes. He does ours at home for about 20 bucks. Really. Rotors are more, but not even close to what they've quoted you.

Get a second opinion. Or better yet, do you have a friend that knows how to do brakes?

I agree with last poster, very easy to do. Front and Rear. Out of pocket costs with rotors for me is about $40.00 rears are little more expensive, but a trip to the junk yard saves some bucks. The only thing that I can think of is that someone put the wrong type of fluid in the system which just wrecked everything so you have to go for a new Master Cylinder, Calibers, and such. What type of car is it.

I have a 1994 Honda Accord. The man from Midas said most of the cost will be the labor since the rotors are hard to get to. The pads will cost $30 for the front and the rotors cost $50 each. The labor for the pads is listed as $60 and the labor for the rotors are listed at $115 each. I only have 1/2 the money so they were going to replace the front brake pads and rotors tomorrow but I think I will first get some more estimates!

Thank you!

Definately get a second opinion. DH took the Bonnieville to Merchant's Tire and they quoted $600 for a new braking system (it's an older car). Took it to my mechanic (whom I trust implicitly) and he did it for $300

I just went to Midas and paid $273 for front brakes and rotors on my Mazda. Only went there for the lifetime warranty.

UPDATE:

I was never one to get second estimates (I don't know why I never did), but after everyone's suggestion, I went to a local mechanic and he fixed the whole brake system for $400! I saved $550! I was able to get it all done instead of only 1/2 the job! Thank you all so much!

glad to hear it went well! I'd suggest taking your car to that guy next time you need something, since he seemed to be reasonable with you! (I'm a big supporter of 'local mechanics' rather than big business places like midas, etc.)

tricia.

I second that! Support your locals!

Great job......glad it turned out well! :D

Good job, Glad to hear you got it for half the price. I can't see those pads being hard to get early 90 Accords were the most popular car sold, there should be many aftermarket options available. Are you sure that wasn't King Midas for those prices the parts must have been made out of Gold. Brake jobs are the number one money maker for mechanics.
