My oldest daughter, who will turn 10 just a few days before we leave, has a dog. This trip is a surprise trip, and we won't be telling the kids until the morning we leave. My plan is to get her dog situated with some friends the night before, so we won't have the added stress of doing it while trying to get everyone off to the airport. This dog very much belongs to my daughter; she walks the dog 3 times a day, feeds her, grooms her as needed, etc.... It isn't a situation where she won't notice if the dog is gone. I don't want to worry her by making up a story about going to the vet, but I need some reason to give her as to why the dog needs to go stay somewhere else that night. (of course it'll be obvious to her after she hears the big news the next morning, that the dog is being cared for while she's off having the time of her life, lol!:goodvibes ) The only person aside from my husband and I that knows we are going to Disney, is the person who will be watching the dog. (I'm not telling anyone else so no one slips the news by accident to the kids!) I'm hoping someone here might have some creative ideas for me?

Thanks!

I'd just tell her that the dog needs to go to the vet for a yearly health check-up and the dog needs to stay overnight.

Has the person watching the dog got one of their own? If not could you say they have asked to 'borrow' it for a night to help them decide about getting one

OOoh that's a good one. Then she can even help you take her puppy over and get it 'situated' and 'teach' the dogwatcher about the puppy's care :)

I was going to say to tell your daughter that the 'sitter' wants to see if they want a dog by keeping it for an overnight as well.

You could also wait until your daughter goes to sleep and then run the dog over to the sitters house, so you don't have to say anything at all until the next morning.

the borrow story would probably work because the friend taking the dog has a daughter that is very good friends with my daughter, and she loves my daughter's dog. (my friend's daughter does not know we're going to Disney, so perhaps we'll just tell our girls that the dog is going for an overnight playdate with their dogs ) I'd never be able to convince her of a well-check at the vet, because she keeps very close tabs on when her dog needs check-ups, is due for shots, etc..... (she's one of the most responsible pet owners I've ever known; sometimes I can hardly believe she's only 9!)

Thanks!
