I need a small safe... can you recommend one?

I need to ask a serious question...
I take sleeping pills, but not nightly. Just when needed. 30 pills might last a month but most months last 2 or more months... Never do I run out 'on my own IYCWIM.
Last night I counted my pills (it just didn't look right) that got filled on the 8th, I think I picked them up on the 9th. I know I did... anyway, I (as of last night) have taken 2 pills. When I counted them, 15 were gone. That means 13 'disappeared'.
NOW, I could have been shorted by the pharmacy, but I am 'guessing' my mom (she has been staying with us) might have found them (she has her own, but tends to sometimes want to sleep for 2 full days and will take one every time she wakes up. Sometimes it is every 4 hours, sometimes every 8, but it more like every 4-5 hours tho).

She got her pills filled on the 22nd I believe of December... she can take 2 per night. I can *almost* be 100% sure she is out or close to being out. I am not going to go snooping or ask, I just know her. (Mine are Lunesta, she takes Ambien, Lunesta works for her but she needs 2 of them at one time-- my sister and I have concluded a lot of her sleep issues are in her head. She insist she can not sleep w/o her meds)

I had mine hiding in a drawer... I thought hidden well. She puts our laundry away (her doing. I don't ask or expect, it is just what she does when she is bored... she does laundry including folding) and I am guessing she found them (as there are now socks in that drawer).

Again I can not be 100% sure she took them and I hate to accuse or jump to conclusions. But I know I have only taken 2 and I know how many are missing. I want to get a safe or something. I suspect if she wants something, and knows it is somewhere, she will do whatever she needs to, to find/get it. I know it wouldn't be anyone else...
Last night when I went to bed (ha! I had moved them), my closet light was off, when I woke up, it was on. I am a light sleeper and did not hear anyone come in... but I am 99% the light was off... she was up all night. She couldn't sleep--she didn't say why).

Do you guys have a or know of a good small safe that would be hard to get open? I don't really want to change my hiding spot (I could, but I suspect she would find them). If I had the safe it would hopefully prevent someone trying to take them, but if they did I'd know. YK?
My purse is no good, she tends to clean it out (she isn't looking for stuff, she just cleans it out, like receipts and such (she's only done it twice. Once to clean it, once to put cash cards in for Christmas). She tells me when she is doing it-- again if they were there and she knew it, it might be too much temptation).

Sorry to hear that :(

I am not sure if you are looking for a small one to hide or what. But Sentry is a great product. I myself would go with one that has a key AND combo, you need both to open it. No one can break into them easily at all.

Maybe you cna get a bigger one and tell her you need it for your important documents :confused3

You gotta decide fireproof or not too.

Her use of sleeping pills sounds worrisome. Is she maybe depressed? Maybe the pill thing would be a good way to bring this up with her. Good luck.

The kids gave my DH a travel safe for Christmas. It was bought at staples and it hangs from a steel rope in the closet. It is the size of a thick paper back book.

I wrote this on another board...

I honestly can not be 100% sure (I just want to protect my stuff), but I know her (and my sister, whom I have had problems with in the past-- however she has not been over since these were filled. Her DA *dumb @$$ boyfriend has but he has not been in my room -that I know of anyways). I haven't had any problems up until now.
Mom didn't sleep last night again. She keeps saying how tired she is and how she is going to go lay down but hasn't.

She knows over taking any pills (this has been going on 10+ years now) believe me, she gets meds from her doctor (he knows of her problems and still gives her stuff) she should not be taking because of heart problems-- we've ragged on her over the last 10 years to no avail. She honestly would rather die feeling good then ever go through rehab again. She will be the first one to tell you.) might hurt or kill her. She isn't stupid. She also knows she is an addict. She knows she depends on certain drugs.
I can also say when it comes down to the wire, it is all about her. Who gives a flying fruitloop about you or what your issues are. Hers are *always* worse. Believe me. And heaven forbid she knows you have some or had some. If you are out early by chance, she (long, long ago in the past) wanted me to call my doctor and tell him they were lost or stolen. I didn't and of course I was then the devil. Only thinking of myself.
She and my sister are the reason I stopped getting pain pill for my legs/hips. They were ALWAYS stolen every freaking month... and believe me, I came up with some excellent hiding places (I once stuck them in the back of my big freezer... I went to work and when I came home they were gone! --I had am aquaintance at work who liked pills too.. thought it was better to hide them at home.). A day like today, I wish I had one.
It is raining and I am seriously hurting. Sitting, laying, standing. doesn't matter, it hurts a lot. Aleve is only doing so much. But it isn't worth the hassle of getting them filled to have them dissapear when you really, really need one. (I had some from Alaska I brought down with me.)
I had 90 pills I had stashed before moving from Alaska... I brought down with me-- they would have lasted 3-5 years. (I only take maybe 20 a year if that) I had them stashed really good. NO one, not even Dj knew where they were. They were gone one weekend when my sister came to check on DS :( We were out of town. I forgot about them to be honest. Out of site, out of mind.

Plus we have talked to Mom about how once you take one pill for the night you should be good. If you wake up and can't go back to sleep, get up. Period. She doesn't think like that.
She will drink 2-3 cokes before going to bed. OR several cups of caffeinated coffee up until bedtime and then wonder why she can't sleep. She gets hostile when we tell her NO caffeine before bed. No matter what you say, she says she is immune to caffeine.

Again, I can not be sure it is her... it is my best guess. I just want to protect my stuff. I wish I didn't have to think like this. It really sucks. I went through this in Alaska with my sister. It is a big part of the reason we moved. :( (They followed 2 years later.)

The good news is, the reason I never take my meds as directed (my pain pills I could take 3 of one and 2 of the other per day... I wouldn't even take that much in a month if at all possible), is because of the addiction problems in my family.
On the bad side, I often go hurting or sleep deprived because I think I can handle it. Often I wait until it is one 'step' too far and I cause myself more problems.

We live in an apt so it would have to be something portable. I can not be drilling in the walls.

Sorry it is so long... DA is here outside. Lord know what he wants from my mom.

First off, always, always, always count your pills either in the car before you get home, or at least as soon as you get home. I've been shorted pills before and it's never anti-biotics. It's always a narcotic of some kind. It's a shame that we often can't even trust the local pharmacies and their technicians.

Second, I know some of these sleeping aids have people walking around in the middle of the night and they aren't even aware of it the next morning. This isn't happening to you, is it? Could you leave them locked up in your car somewhere....a place they wouldn't think to look?

If indeed it is your mother or another family member, that just sucks. To think you have to hide your meds from them, that's just plain wrong. I wish I could recommend a safe, but I can't. I just wanted to throw in my two cents, for whatever it's worth. (the subject of another thread here today)

Thought about the car, but it gets so hot here. I was told never to store them above 80 degrees.

I should have counted them. I just wouldn't have dreamed they would dissapear.

I do not night walk. I am positive. :) Plus you would have to take 2 pills a night and believe me, I can tell I did not.
Every place I have ever thought of (in the freezer behind a ton of stuff, under the bottom mattess--inside the wooden part of the frame-taped no less, in a bag of kotex in the bathroom :rotfl: , in a bag of dry cat food *gross I know, I was trying to be creative*, behind spices no one would touch in the kitchen, in unused bags in the bottom of a box... every place has been found :( I am running out of ideas.

Thanks for the suggestion guys! The sad thing is, my sister's boyfriend can pretty much pick any lock. Doesn't matter what kind it is. I had what I thought was a good safe when we lived in Alaska. It managed to be opened. :sad2: right in front of my eyes. He was showing me how easy it is.

I'm going to PM you with the best place to hide things... You're going to LOVE this one! ;)

I'm glad you posted these, I was looking for the same thing myself. I ordered the largest of the sentry safes earlier today! :thumbsup2

We have two Sentry safes. We've got a larger one in Florida for house papers, birth certificates/passports, spare car keys, etc. that's bolted to the floor.

DH has one like this in NJ for holding his spare car keys, his passport, and other odds and ends he needs there:

It would be perfect for you, the lock can't be picked as it uses a tubular key as opposed to a regular one, and you can pick one up on sale for around $60. It's not exactly the safe shown above, because the keys/lock are much more secure but looks similar and is about that size.
