Last number of weeks my DD's hair has gotten really difficult to comb and is not soft and smooth anymore, feels more like straw. I'm chalking it up to all the swimming she's been doing this summer between YMCA camp and grandma's house. She's never had this happen in past summers, but this summer has really taken it's toll. Any suggestions on shampoo to use with her being in chlorinated water all the time?

TIA!

We have a salt water pool and I try to swim everyday. I use Wen and have great results.

Make sure your dd WETS her hair before she gets into the pool. Totally, wet, like before you add shampoo. They water will help prevent the clorine from sticking.

(My dd was on the swim team for years.)

Agree with Kimberle - also, have her wash it immediately after getting out of the pool. Our family is in the pool every weekend and my hairstylist has always said to wet hair first, then wash immediately after. I've never noticed any ill effects from chlorine or salt when I do this :)

Otherwise, I don't use any special shampoo/conditioner. I'd say something super hydrating though :)

Any decent conditioner will help.

But if her hair is turning green, you have to get special shampoos. It happens a lot to swimmers and there are several good ones.

life long swimmer here-the single best trick I ever learned was to put a small amount of conditioner-less than a dime sized-on wet hair before getting in the water. Smooth it through the strands so it coats well-it blocks the chlorinated water from getting to the hair itself. On swim teams that would mean under the cap, but I would do that all summer in my home pool too.

I do exactly the same under my swim cap every week, it also helps getting the darn thing on!!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, it's greatly appreciated! Hair not turning green, so we're good there. :thumbsup2

My hair dresser says... wet hair throughly and comb conditioner in hair before swimming.
This works for me all the time and I have color in my hair.

I use ultra swim shampoo to get the chlorine out after swimming. It's pretty inexpensive and you can find it at CVS. Ive never heard the conditioning before swimming tip though, I'll have to try that!
