So, I'm trying out for cheering. I'm a junior, but I've always wanted to do it but felt my weight barred me from doing it and this year i was just like, yeah, I'm going to do it because I want to. Well, I've been pretty nervous, and I just found out they do tons of running. I'm not a runner. I am really really scared of being absolutely humiliated. Ahhhh, I'm not backing out now, but I'm really really nervous.

Pep talk anyone :guilty:

Just do your best and don't care what anybody else thinks. What matters the most is you knowing you put forth your best effort.

Running isn't that bad. It is actually quite addicting once you get into it. Start training now and you might feel more confident during tryouts.

Just remember, it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. Their opinions will not matter 10 years down the road or even a few months from now. As long as you do this for yourself and do your best, there is nothing to be ashamed of.

Best of luck and some pixiedust: for you!

Going out for cheering is a great idea. I'm impressed that you're going after something that you've wanted for a long time. Awesome.

Why not start the running tonight? Ask your mom to drive you to the track (if you're not comfortable with the one at your school, go to a neighboring town). Make sure that you have running shoes - not regular sneakers; a good pair of running shoes will make a HUGE difference - and try to jog a mile. If you have to stop and walk, OK - just start again. Do you have an ipod? That helps - wear it, the music will help make the time pass.

Even a few weeks of training will make a HUGE difference. You'll also be more confident when it's time to run with them.

Good luck!

You can do anything you want to do!

The running, although not fun, might help with the weight, which in turn might make you more comfortable out there.

I have no idea if you are truly overweight or just body conscious like so many teenagers are these days. If you are 10-20lbs overweight or body conscious, go for it! You will do fine and it's not that important.

If you are more than 20 lbs overweight, you might find the tumbling and jumping part of cheering difficult. I competed in gymnastics at about 145 lbs, and it was fine because I was muscular, but then after I quit and became an adult, I tried those same skills at 165 and it so wasn't happening. Maybe practice some at home before you try out to see how the skills go!

Good luck! I'm rooting for you! Keep us updated!

Thanks guys, I've been running for a few weeks, but tryouts are tomorrow, and I guess tryouts aren't as running intensive as practice, which is better, in a way. And I do find jumping the hardest, football cheering, luckaly, you only have one routine for home coming and the rest is just cheers (which i'm good at) so I guess we'll just see.

Best of luck to you. I know that you will do great! Just remember to be your natural exuberant self.

good luck megan!

Running can be a lot of fun. And if you have to walk, just start running again.

Remember, the ones who cheer best are the ones chosen!

And remember this thought: Cheering is about supporting your school and giving something back to it. It's not about you. Want it badly, and show the school you want to support it...and you'll be fine!

If it doesn't end up being cheerleading, maybe it's student government or any one of a thousand other leadership positions in clubs or organizations. Being a cheerleader does not define your life. If you go in there with the right attitude, you won't be nervous. You'll shine. You'll be the best your school has to offer.

:cheer2: Go Megan! :cheer2:

Do the best you can do and I am sure you will make the squad!

Be sure to tell us how everything goes.

Best wishes and lots of luck! :grouphug:

So, here's an update =]

At tryouts today, we only had to run for 5 minutes, which isn't bad. I totally had no idea what to do with my hands during my jumps. But I was good with the sidelines, and I made the coaches laugh and one even said "oh my gosh, you're so cute!" Hehe. Oh, and since there are only 40 girls, they think everyone's going to make a team! Hooray!

Except for that 3 mile run with the cross country team on thursday. Yeah, mandatory. But hey, I'll get through it.

Hey there!!! Wishing you the best from a good friend!

Our cheerleaders run, lift and do cardio 4x a week. My friends who are cheerleaders tell me all about it.

I know you can do this! Your energy will shine through and your spirit will take you the rest of the way!!
