My scale is an old spring model, probably 10 years old. Out with the old, in with the new!

So I'm looking for a scale that measures both fat and bmi, and has a leveler.

Any suggestions? Anyone just love or hate that scale of theirs?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

(P.s. I did a search and found nothing on this topic.) :sunny:

Hey Sweetie! Nice to see you!

As far a scales go, I love my Tanita. It measures weight and bmi, don't know about levelers.

The weight is very close to what my doc's scale weighs, so no nasty surprises when I go to the doc's office.

Don't check your bmi in the am. The scale always has the bmi higher than it really is in the am, don't know why, probably something to do with water and density stuff, lol. They recommend checking your bmi in the afternoon, when you would get a more accurate reading.

Can't wait to see you in October!

I also recommend the Tanita. It's very consistent...which can be hard to accomplish with a digital scale.

Ooh, I need a new scale too! Thanks for posing the question, house_of_princesses! So, where did you buy your Tanita scale at?

Another vote for Tanita.

Hi Mom!! I'm looking forward to October, too!! :sunny:
And with my new scale showing how well my diligence is paying off, I'll be behind you....You, the Belle of the Ball!! :cheer2:

Any particular model Tanita? Any great place to purchase it?

Thanks again!! ::MinnieMo

Well, I've found that mirrors can be very inaccurate from day to day, even from hour to hour. In the course of a week, my mirror can go from saying I'm a Greek God to saying I'm so incredibly fat, and then back again -- seemingly without any predictability. I've tried a number of brands and models of mirrors, and they all seem to have the same defect. I've had my wife check this out too, as well as folks in my weight-loss group, and everyone reports the same, seemingly inherant defect in mirrors.

I asked a doctor (my weight-loss specialist) about it and he indicated that he's heard this pretty consistently over his career. He indicated that the defect was related to the technology behind mirrors, i.e., optics. It relies very heavily on the interaction of reflected light on nerves at the back of the eye. That part of it, though, works perfectly, most of the time. The problem is that that nerve is connected to the brain. While our understanding of the brain is somewhat limited, as compared to the rest of the system that mirrors rely on, it does seem that the lack of predictability and therefore reliability of mirrors rests there.

I bought mine at Bed Bath & Beyond.

I have a Tanita and I LOVE it! Best scale I ever bought!

We bought our scale at Brookstone - $50. It records weight for 5 individuals (we happen to be a family of 5 so we love it). I have found it very motivating to click on and see what my weight was the last time I weighed.

Which model Tanita can someone suggest, please? :sunny: Do the models with the BMI capability actually work?

Mirrors are not my friend. :teeth: And for the last 5 years, every time I look in one, I am always shocked. "Who is that?, and wow, she needs an extreme makeover!" . :rotfl:

I don't know what model my Tanita is, but it does measure weight and bmi for two people. You just have to set the height, and then when you push a little button (with your toe) it shows your height, then says 0.0 and it is ready for you to weigh. I don't pay much attention to the bmi, because I always weigh in the am. I think I bought it at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

Yes. They're not absolutely accurate, but they're reliably inaccurate, which is just as good for weight-loss purposes. While the BMI might read 1%-2% above or below, it'll always read 1%-2% above or below, and so your comparisons month-to-month will show your progress. Just be sure to measure yourself the same time each week, at the same level of hydration, and wearing the same clothes.

Beyond the reliable 1%-2% drift from true, electro-static BMI measurement goes south once you get seriously muscular, which most folks losing weight don't have to worry about for a while.
