I need a new Mattress - any recommendations?

After reading the reviews last year, I bought a InnovaForm memory foam mattress from Costco. We have been very happy with it. Check out the costco website. You do not have to have a costco card to buy it. There are often free shipping and $100 off sales going on them. I highly recommend it. Happy back here.

We bought an inexpensive mattress, then on top of that we put a 3" memory foam. Love it! We've had this for 3 years now and can't imagine sleeping on anything else.
Cheap Mattress $200.00
3" memory foam $100.00 (amazon.com)

After reading reviews i actually cancelled this order!! just could not spend 3000.00 on some bed i was not completely happy with. So i made a comrpomise w/my husband - we buy a memory foam not the temperpedic and if we don't love it we'll loose some money and after a year or so buy another mattress so i ordered a Memory Foam from Overstocks - it got great reviews - $450.00 delivered - coming the end of the week - will check back and let you know!

Did spend it, but on the Kingsdown... husband didn't like the "feel" of the Tempur!!!

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread.....but can an owner of a Temper-pedic bed give me more deals on the odor I've been reading about?

I have just about decided that this is the bed system for us, except for the gassy odor ( :rolleyes1 ) I've been hearing and reading about. I'm pretty sensitive to stuff like this....so it can be a deal breaker. Thanks a ton in advance for the heads up info!!

When we originally got our Tempur Pedic (10 yrs ago), I did notice a rubber/plastic smell as they were bringing it in... but nothing that was very distracting to me.. and don't remember ever being bothered by it.. slept on it the first night, and don't recall any problems with smelling anything "funny".

Only thing I do remember is that it was winter-time when we bought it, and it was rock hard for about 6 hrs till it warmed up, lol!

My DH didn't like the feel of the Tempur either. He said it was like the bed was trying to "suck him in." :rotfl2:

Like you, we were looking to spend LESS. We paid $1000 on our queen mattress set 13 years ago and it is still going strong. We figure we could spend less than $2000 on a king mattress set. :rolleyes1

We tried out beds at Sleepys, Macys, and Raymour & Flannigan and kept gravitating towards the same bed... the Simmons Black Beautyrest Perla for around $3K.

Went home that first evening and looked at our current mattress and sure enough it was a Simmons Beautyrest Worldclass mattress. I guess we are use to the "feel" of that brand.

We gave in and decided to splurge on the Perla. We won't get delivery until 12/5/09 when the rest of the our new bedroom set gets delivered.

I got my girls foam mattress toppers from Costco last winter. It did have an "odor" while airing it out and maybe the first day or 2 but it went away eventually and you can not smell anything now...

I use a 3" memory foam topper on a cheap mattress (like a previous poster) and I love it! I also got mine at Amazon.

In regard to the smell- We bought a Temper-Pedic for my DD's bed. It smelled horribly for about 5-7 nights. Smelled so bad that I had to keep her bedroom door shut!
I do tend to be sensitive to smells. Especially chemical type smells. I was nervous that the off-gassing would be harmful to her and we kept the window in her room open and she slept in our bedroom in her sleeping bag until the smell faded. It was pretty gross.

Once the smell faded- she loves her mattress. My DH and I love the feel of the foam and when it came time to replace our bed we wanted the same. But there was NO WAY I was going to have that smell in our house again for a week- especially with a new baby in the house.

We ended going with the memory foam mattress in the Sultan series at IKEA. We absolutely LOVE it! There was a slightly sweet smell for a few nights- but nothing offensive or chemical smelling. We saved a bundle of money over the Temper-pedic. I really wish we'd gone with one for my DD as well.
Live and learn!

Just to put my two cents on an old thread. I made a mistake and bought a hard pillowtop...a Serta Perfect Sleeper. Just horrible....its like sleeping in a hammock. And I can't flip it so that's a problem too. So I'm out $1,000 until I can afford to buy another one.

Thanks all for your responses.

Regarding the odor.....I guess I won't know until I experience it. The big question is am I willing to gamble ($3200) that I won't be bothered??

The set FELT absolutely delicious when I laid on it in Raymour and Flannigan.

When it comes to a mattress, you get exactly what you paid for. I agree with others about saving up for the future, especially since your back is hurting. I personally, having already done so, would avoid a Costco type deal. Every brand of mattress has different levels of quality. Just because it says Simmons doesn't make it good. My Stepsis gave me her new bed for my guest room after she got married. SHe thought it was great because of the name, but it is awful. Glad to get it for it's purpose and thankful she thought of me, but if I had to sleep on it I'd be in traction!!

I did lots of research and ended up with a pillow top from The Original Mattress Factory. They are one of the only companies left that makes mattresses that you can flip. I just don't buy the idea of no need to flip a mattress.

No pressure sales too.

Our mattress is almost 20 yrs. It's a Serta two-sided pillow top that we flip and rotate regularly. I've started shopping and I think our next mattress will be from the Original Mattress Factory. I was very impressed with the salesperson at the store and how he didn't zero in on the most expensive model, but rather encouraged my husband and me to take our time and test out the models. He explained the differences and the construction for each. I also like that you can flip their models. I also like that you can actually tour the one of their factory locations.

Good luck!!
