I need a new Mattress - any recommendations?

I never realized how picky I was until I went mattress shopping - it took us several trips to narrow down to what we wanted. I like a little softer, dh likes a little firmer, but we were able to both like the eurotop style. We tried sleep # and tempurpedic, and we didn't like either.

I ended up getting ours at sears because we got a great deal, it was interest free for a year, and we earn points that we can exchange for GC's

I think this is the one we got

and I LOVE it. I would never get out of bed if I could - it is so, so comfy, I sleep all night now, and my back never hurts anymore.

IMHO don't ever buy a pillow or euro top. i have made my mattresses last 20 years by flipping and rotating the mattress regularly. you can't flip either of the above two types.

I don't know how common it is, but the mattress I talked about earlier was pillowtop on both sides. Maybe you, OP, could find one like that because I agree with dissybroad that flipping AND rotating the mattress lengthens the life. We rotated our's every three months.

I have a Spring Air pillowtop and my dh and I do not like it. We bargained down to $1000 and have had it for 5 years. Like another poster said - we have a hump in the middle. It's also a large mattress and we have a hard time getting sheets to fit - even the really deep pocket sheets. I think my sheets are 17" deep and they don't fit right.

DH and I said we will never buy another pillowtop. I wish I could cut that part off.

One word of consideration when choosing a pillowtop. Most mattress now-a-days are non-flippable. With that said, with a pillowtop, unless it has pocked coils, you will eventually over time develop a sag. We had a nice Sealy and after two years it was like sleeping on a incline. Both my wife and I naturally rolled towards the outer side of the mattress. It fell into a defect category from the Store and the mattress is being replaced free of charge (actually we are upgrading to a Tempurpedic-like mattress (not an actual Tempurpedic brand but feels the same and hopefully lasts the same).

The newer mattress which have a pocketed coil are more stable and are less prone to the problem mentioned above. Of course the older mattress were also less prone (had a mattress that lasted 20 years with no problem).

Just food for thought.

On Pillowtops. A matress guy told me you are better off buying a regular mattress and then buying a Matress pad- or a featherbed or whatever to lay ON TOP of the matress. Something that isn't permanent so that you can flip and rotate your matress.

We have been looking too. And really are not finding anything yet that we are in love with.

Tempurpedics are really just too expensive for us. (we have dogs and small kids still so the thought of what could happen to it- I have visions of the dogs eating it- have kept us away)

Wow, thanx for all the comments/reviews. I see this might be a long hunt for a mattress.....

We just bought a Serta from Menards. It is a very nice pillowtop. From what I have been told Menards offers the lowest price you can get on Serta mattresses. Our Menards only had 3 styles but they were a good deal.

Have to put my 2 cents in here also...

We got our Tempur Pedic mattress 10 yrs ago, and it is still as good as new. I remember waking up with sore neck, stiff shoulders, etc before we got this mattress and I can honestly say in the 10 yrs we've gotten it, I have rarely woken up with any of these problems. I will never go back to a "regular" mattress again!

In fact I am in the process of saving up so that we can buy each of my daughters one also. The mattresses that we bought when they moved out of their cribs are already junk, and the mattresses are only about 5 and 4 yrs old. (and they are Sealy Serta, so not cheap).

I know Tempur mattresses are more expensive on initial purchase, but imo, you have to look at the warranties of all these mattresses too. With Tempur, if it sags/forms a valley 3/4 of an inch deep in the 1st 10 years, they will replace it absolutely free. Then for the next 10 yrs after that, they will replace it at a prorated cost.

Ours is still in perfect shape at the 10-yr mark, but I know if/when we need a new one, it's definitely going to be another Tempur.

And by the time my daughters would need a new one, after the 20-year warranty is done on them, they would be 26 and 28 yrs old, so most likely be moved out of here, lol.

Before you buy a mattress, visit your local select comfort store, even if you do not plan to buy a select number bed. When you go in, they will have you lie on one of the demo beds and will adjust the firmness until you are comfortable. You will then know what kind of mattress you prefer. I always thought I'd like a softer mattress, but after doing this I found I actually prefer a firmer mattress.

We did buy a select number bed and we love it. One of the best features is that my wife and I can have different firmness settings. We paid about $2000 total for the mattress with the platform (they don't have box springs).

One thing to consider is how long the mattress will last. For example, the sleep number bed is twice the price of a conventional mattress, but it has a 20 year warranty, where as a conventional mattress usually has a life expectency of 10 years.

my husband has his mind made up and INSISTS that we are to get a heavenly bed. i don't know whether to order straight from them. I don't know what to do. Our last mattress has been a complete nightmare since the day we got it & I just don't want to make another mattress mistake. help?

I'm going to try the TempurPedic this weekend - gets great reviews - think i'm gonna try the "Classic"!

The October 2009 issue of Consumer Reports includes reviews of mattress brands. The top-rated brands were Tempur-Pedic and Orginal Mattress Factory.

Pete and I are in the market for a new bed - and we really want a Tempur. We'll go to a couple locally owned stores that I know carries them - how did you all "bargain down"? I know we'll still be paying a lot of $$, but every little bit off helps! ;)

Another vote for the Tempurpedic! We LOVE ours. The only bad thing is that we don't sleep well in hotels anymore because our bed is so much more comfortable. We bought ours from a locally owned shop and they told us they couldn't reduce the price because of their agreement with the manufacturer, but they gave us free tempurpedic pillows, which we also love!

You can't negotiate the price of tempurpedic. All the stores have to sell at the same price. Where you can save $$ is on the base. we are not getting a tempur base ($2,600). We are getting a beauty rest or simmons base
($1500). I was told that the warranty will not be affected. We are also getting the adjustable so that is why the base is so expensive for us. If you can ever find a sale, and all the stores will have the same discounts, you will be lucky. I have been looking at this mattress for 3 yrs and never seen it on sale. We are getting a king size so we get two free pillows ($125+ each). I don't know if they give free pillows on all sizes but I knew they would for a king. We also are getting free delivery and set up and a tax rate for the delivery destination (our house) which is 3% less than the town it is sold in. At $5500 that is about $200 savings there.

Whatever mattress you end up getting, don't forget to get a Memory Foam mattress cover. They are the best. I can't sleep on anything else. They are available, for the best price, at Walmart. :thumbsup2

IMO, buying a mattress is really a personal choice. You have to go and lay down on lots of them and find what is comfortable for you. When we bought ours, we were in the Better Bedding store for well over an hour. We did not like the sleep number bed at all. I liked the tempur, but dh did not. We ended up with a sealy that we are both happy with. Good luck.

Keep in mind the Tempur beds will hold body heat and if you like your room very cold it gets hard. The sleep number is a glorified air mattress and if you are sensitive to noise it will irritate you.

My husband did not like the Tempurpedic!!! We went w/a Kingsdown 600 Series bed - his side is firmer than my side! Hope we'll be happy - don't see great reviews on-line!

Did spend it, but on the Kingsdown... husband didn't like the "feel" of the Tempur!!!

My friend just bought a Temper and it cost $3000.00 - i will not spend that - looking to spend up to 1000.00 - i hear alot about the pillow-tops - any views? Will be heading to Sleepy's this weekend - my back kills me from my mattress - which is a good one but is 13 years old...

any tips,

thanx

lisa
