We are renting a minivan from dollar using the discount code KISS from April 24 thru May 5. Our total including tax and surcharges is $457 for the whole 11 nights. I thought this was an awesome price. I am not sure when the code expires but it is worth a try. You can just go to their website and plug in the code and see what you get. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Wow - I tried a bunch of different codes at several different places and the prices were all high. It must be a busy week in combination with a fairly long rental making the prices higher than usual.

The best rate I could find on a minivan was at Avis using the K codes listed on Mousesavers along with the USA rate code. It gave me a total price of $526.00 which still seems high. If you join their "My Avis" program (quicker check-in etc.) you can get an additional $5/day up to $25 off your rental which would bring it down to $500.

My only other suggestion is to look for last-minute deals as your trip gets closer. I usually book something I can live with and then watch every day as my trip get close for the specials they run. Even if they don't run a special on a bigger car, they may have one for intermediates and you get could 2 of them rather than 1 larger car.

Wish I could have been more help!!

Do not assume you can reserve for two weeks, get the cheaper weekly rate and turn the car in early. They can and do change you back to the higher daily rate if you return a car early. To be on the safe side always reserve the car for the amount of time you plan to keep it. 11 days would be way short of two weeks and you could get hit with a big charge for turning it in early.

I agree with Carol -- don't reserve for two weeks if you're only keeping the van for 11 days. I did this once, thinking I would save some $$ and it ended up costing me a fortune. There was a penalty for early return plus the higher daily rate so you really should just book for the time you need. Have you considered trying Priceline. My brother had an odd rental period, 7 days plus 9 hours, and he ended up getting a compact for $17/day. On the other hand, I got a full-size for $17/day but that was for a full two week rental. If you consider Priceline, read all you can at www.biddingfortravel.com and remember that reservations are non-refundable and non-changeable so make sure and double sure that your plans are set in stone. Good luck!!

We needed a van to seat 9 (8 adults and one toddler in a carseat). I checked in with Alamo and they have them. I don't remember the price, but it turned out to be WAY cheaper to get a SUV which is on a special (weekly OR daily). We got 2 SUVs for far cheaper than one minivan, AND it ran over Memorial Day weekend. That also gives us way more flexibility as we could forsee times when not everyone wanted to go in the same direction.
