I have a HP digital now and it's about 6 years old. Still has a 8 MB chip. Yea old huh? And it chews up batteries like candy. I am going to Disney in June any help? Is the Canon S3 pretty good?

It seams to be a very highly regarded camera. I bought one for the wife, but she had me send it back as she liked using my dSLR better.

check out dpreview for ratings etc.

What are you looking for, that might help in the suggestions.

I have seen so many good pictures in the "picture of the day" threads. Just wondering what eveyone has. Like in my above post, I need something new before my trip. When it comes to photo terminalogy, i am not very good. What is d SLR and what is a good camera for that?

The pix in the POTD thread are made with all kinds of cameras, from el cheapo point and shoots, to big-bucks full frame dSLR's. The best ones, IMO, were made using dSLR's, although not necessarily hugely expensive ones. Surprisingly, many very good ones are made with inexpensive digital cameras. In many cases, you can *right* click on the image, to access the EXIF information, which will give you the camera model and exposure information.

As Master Mason suggested, you might want to post some brief specifics about what kind of camera you are looking for, and your anticipated budget.

A dSLR is a digital single lens reflex camera. They are the ones where you can remove and change the lenses, as well as setting manual settings to get the picture as close as your skill allows to what you want it to look like. They start in the neiborhood of $500 and go up to many many thousands of dollars.

A bridge camera which is what the S3 would be concidered is somewhere between a dSLR and a Point and Shoot. You have much more creative control if you so desire, although they generally have good auto features as well.

Things to consider
Size
cost
Shutter Lag (how fast does the camera take the picture after you hit the button)
cycle time (my term) how fast can you take the next picture
Do you really want to deal with multiple lenses if your looking at a dSLR
Your long term goals with the camera (do you want something to grow into or are you happy just snapping pictures)

Hope that helps some.
