I Missed My Chance. Twice!!!

I got a phone call once from someone with a strong accent saying they were with the sheriffs department and I would be arrested immediately (never said why) if I didn’t send money to them and they also needed my social security number to process the payment lol. DH and I were like who falls for this? Must be somebody or they wouldn’t be doing it.

What is sad is that many people fall for these scams.

I know of one personally who was told her electric would be turned off and she sent money. I have heard of others scammed but don't know them personally.

what gets me are the calls that obviously come from scammers trying to get a recording of your voice and specifically saying the word 'yes'. all the same-caller id reads as a legit local/regional business and when you answer the phone there's an autobot saying 'hi (insert your first name)' and no matter if you reply or not it immediately toggles into 'hello (insert your first name) can you hear me?'. I'm to the point that unless i'm expecting a call from a specific business I just let it go to voicemail.

on the gift card soliciting scams-i was pleased to witness Walmart combating this a couple of months ago. I was in their store and overheard a message being sent out on the walki-talkis to staff that there had been an observed uptick in multiple purchase gift card sales to seniors and if staff observed or encountered seniors attempting to make these types of purchases to call and get manager approval. sure enough that night on the local news they were reporting on some new threatening phone scam targeting seniors in the region. good on Walmart for trying to protect vulnerable populations!

My daughter called me earlier. Someone washed one of their checks. They made a payment for their sewer to the county. That was paid. The same check was used to try to cash a check for $10,600. Crazy!! They hardly write any checks (I still do).

They were getting something for breakfast this morning and using their debit card ($ 5 breakfast sandwich). The card was denied. My SIL charged it and as soon as he got in his car checked the account on-line. He saw the checking account was trying to clear or something......pending. She took a picture of the check front and back. Of course, it was denied. They don't have anything near that amount in this one checking account. He was at the bank all morning - closing account/opening new account/filling out papers. I wonder if the person on the check even exists. Probably not. They wrote "back pay" on the memo portion too.

I have heard of check washing but did not know anyone personally. We have gone through our cards being compromised over the years - myself, y son and daughter. This was a first for my SIL. My daughter said my SIL looked like he was going to have a heart attack.

this happened to my hairdresser. fortunatly she belongs to a very small local credit union and when the bogus check came in they knew her well enough to realize it was hinky so they called her to verify. come to find out she was a victim of a larger scale scam where people were driving around neighborhoods that still have old school individual mailboxes at the end of driveways. they would scout out the area to see when mail pickup happened and hit the area an hour or two earlier. they always stole something like an outgoing utility bill b/c they knew it takes a few weeks before those businesses will reach out on a late/unpaid bill. they washed the checks and went on buying sprees for items they could re-sell quickly. as a result I won't put any outgoing mail with checks in our mailbox-they all go directly to the post office.

@barkley I used to put my outgoing mail in my mailbox - house. I have not for years. It's either the post office or I take a two/three block walk to mail at a corner mailbox. It has a very thin/small slot. I know not as safe.

In my daughter's case, the original check was cashed and then washed.......what happens to our checks when they arrive at their destination? Deposited and then what? How many hands does it go through before "maybe shredded".

Sadly no one is 100% safe from any any scam unfortunately.

That Nigerian Prince attempted to contact me about receiving his millions but I missed both of his calls.:sad::sad:

...that's because we were on the phone for about 35 minutes chatting about last-minute details about my upcoming transfer of those millions into my Swiss account....popcorn::

Anyone else getting the fake emails about service at PayPal money requests? Get them frequently for my BIG purchase of who knows what as it doesn't even say what I bought.

Good thing the sad looking fake email gives a phone number to call if I suspect fraud or didn't make a purchase. Yes, I will get right on that and give them all of my personal information.:rolleyes2 Jack wagons.

I have read other articles saying this is more urban legend than reality. Even if some scammer records you saying the word 'yes' what can they possibly do with it? Seems to me to make some dubious use of that would require voice recognition software where you have previously recorded your replies and the two would need to match. Anyone can randomly record themselves saying 'yes' and how would anyone else know who that really is? Not something I worry about.

I don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize. Legit businesses will leave a message, scammers NEVER leave messages...............LOL. Most scammers seem like they are calling from an off-shore location, talk with a heavy accent and often speak broken English. You can usually hear a lot of background noise like they are in some sort of call center where many people are also trying to carry out whatever scam they are running.

My favourite exchange...

Me: Hello?
Cold caller: Hey! I'm from the INTERNET! I can see by your screen that you have the Malariaware virus! I can fix it for you remotely, if you can just give me your credit card details?
Me: >Klick<

we get WAVES of calls (some that will leave voice messages) that sound totally legit/native English speaking from scammers posing as regional charities often claiming to be affiliated with military or police groups soliciting donations. when there's an uptick in them the local news will start warning about them.
