I messed up.

So I messed up and forgot about the freaking toll booths. We rented a car and ended up going through the “cash only” side of the toll booth. I was hoping it would be manned because I only had dollar bills. No such luck. We had people behind us so we ended up having to drive through. I have no idea what kind of repercussions there are or what I should do to address them.

Has this happened to anyone else? What should I do?

You will get a bill in the mail and it will usally have a "first offence" option if not you will have to pay the full amount of the toll. I am not sure what that would be. If you got a ticket it will show you.

It depends on your car rental company. We rented from Hertz once and went through a 25-cent toll and had no change and the "Pay By Plate" kicked in. We had to pay the 25-cents plus a $25 fee to the pay by plate company.

Next time try this: Before driving on, see if there is an address and/or phone number posted in the toll booth and if so, write it down. Call the toll authority on the phone immediately (not the next day, not when you get back home) asking "for advice". Be prepared to send the money in the mail (snail mail) immediately.

For car companies that use pay by plate that does not matter. The agreement is already in place. We tried to send payment and it was returned to us.
