I will be purchasing a DVC share in the next year… the questions I have revolves around when to purchase it. My DVC rep is talking about purchasing sooner rather then later because I may be eligible to get a “bonus year” or points. I prefer to wait until later in the year when I can make it a pure cash transaction with no financing. I guess I didn’t really understand his explanation of buy now get more points in the long run would work. I’m all for taking advantage of a good deal, but is it smoke and mirrors being put on by my DVC agent? Does anyone know what he may be alluding to if anything?

I can help answer this question. We just purchased this summer, with a Sept use year. I actually purchased in July. As soon as I purchased, I had 150 points immediately (the total number of points in my contract). These were actually 2005 points, even though I purchased in summer of 2006. Then, two months later, in Sept., I got my 150 2006 points. Thus, I got a year's worth of "free" points. Free meaning that I had immediate use of them, and did not have to pay MFs on those points. I also had the option of waiving the "free points" for a reduced initial buy in (though it was far more cost effective to keep the points).

100% of my 2005 points could be banked, even though the banking windows had long since closed.

Hope this helps.

SSR will soon have little or nothing to sell except buildings not yet opened. Usually, with a new purchase, points from the current Use Year will be included and a new allotment of points will come within a few months (thus the "bonus" points). If a building has not yet opened, there are no current points available so no "bonus" points.

Within the next several months it is expected that sales will begin for AKV - but again, there will be no current points available until the resort physically opens next fall with the renovated 5th/6th floor villas and that will be accentuated until the new AKV building opens in 2009.

In the past, DVC has had other incentives where "Developer Points" (points from other resorts owned by DVD) were offered - usually in lieu of a lower price - for those interested in having some point simmediately available. Some referred to those as "bonus" points.

In any event, there is past history of sales programs where some form of "bonus" points was offered. In this case, I expect it's the first situation I mentioned where no current ("bonus") points will come with the contract.

If you were to purchase right now, it sounds as though there are still some contracts available in the buildings already open (thus the "bonus" points), but if you wait the remaining buildings won't come with any points until the building actually opens.

I am not sure if I understand this 100% but I will try:

Right now they have inventory on a building that opened yesterday. When it opened there was only 19 days left in 2006. If you buy now and they "assign you this building" or whatever they call it- you will get 100% points for 2006 bout only pay 19/365 mfs. (sorry for not reducing that fraction)
That was how I was understanding it.

Ok this post really got my interest, as right now i am considering whether to buy a resale or directly from disney!! I called my guide, and in a nut-shell: if I buy in as a referral I pay $86 per point... without a referral, is $15 per point more- then i could get a point bonus! For us, even though the extra points are tempting, i can not swallow the extra bucks!!

Eveyone has been great! I talked a litlle further with my rep and I can choose either a discount or 10% to 15%, or they will double my points at the inital buy in. If I buy 150 points I'll have 300 avalible for immediate useage. As for your thought about resale... One thing that has me thinking about going through Disney directly is it's a better per point proce then the resellers right now (86 bucks per point if you choose the % off option). Also, if you buy into Saratoga Springs you get an extra 11 years on your contract. Your membership does not expire until 2053 instead of 2042 with all the other resorts. That is the main reason I'm choosing Saratoga from disney, over a resell from another member. Good luck!

You won't actually have double points - but with borrowing could have access to your 2007 Use Year points immediately. You would get the current points with your purchase and another allotment when your use Year begins. (If you purchase a February Use Year - you would get February, 2006 points and then another allotment on February 1, 2007.)

The expiration date is even better than you think - th eolder resorts all expire on January 31, 2042 and SSR has until January 31, 2054.

Enjoy!

Did I read this right???? :confused3

You have to spend $15 more per point to get the "bonus" points?

That doesn't sound right and certainly not a deal when you can rent points for $11 pp.

Doc, anyone with clarifications on this?

Actually they told me that is the promtion double points to start off with. If I buy 150, they give me a bonus 150 and then I can borrow from 2007 and have 450 if I were to max out all the points I could take. It took me a few questiosn to wrap my noodle around that.

Aside from the inital buy in your paying around 600 a year in yearly dues on top of the buy in price. If you don't plan on going every year for the next 20 plus years then yeah... renting points is the way to go. That is what I've done for the last 4 years. That is my opinion at least.

Hey Dtrippie- Can you ask your guide if that promo has a name or how someone else (other than you) can get it.
I am thinking about buying soon- and I the only deal I know of is the $86per point, and then if I buy before Dec. 31st- I get 2006 points with hardly any Mfs- (under $50 Mfs)

If I understand this right-
Technically- on a 150 point contract I still could use 450 points in 2007- by banking 2006 pts- using current 2007 pts and borrowing from 2008.
What you are describing sounds like the same thing-but I am not sure. I would love to get an extra 150 pts- but I am not sure if we you are talking about the same deal- just putting it in different terms (because of the way your guide presented it to you).

But if you get 300 2006 pts., then bank them, then wait for your 2007 points, then borrowed from 2008- you caould use 600 points in 2007- Veterans: Is this right?

When we bought you could get the bonus points. They had to be used in your first use year, no banking. So if you bought 150 points, you got 150 bonus. You could bank your "real" points. You got the bonus if you paid 101/pt. After running the numbers, it made much more sense to go for the F&F discount. Though DH was salivating over the bonus points(400 in our case).

Thanks for clarifying Star W- I get it now- it is a choice between f&F or bonus points.
Interesting.

Starr W is right. That was how it was explaned to me about the bonus points for purchase. While I know the reffeal 15% off expires on Jan 20th, my guide didn't know if the offer for bonus points would go away tomorrow, or when SSR sold out.
