I'm looking for some new reading material, for my own entertainment. I'm curious what do you think of when you hear the term...modern classic?

I think of books like...
The Cider House Rules
The time traveler's wife

Also, several from James Michener come to mind.

Anyone have a different take?

The Great Gatsby
Mockingbird Lane
Uncle Tom's Cabin
The Pianoist (sp)
Anne Frank
Pride and Prejudice
Catcher in the Rye

These are titles I immed. think of when I hear classic. Some I was assigned to read in school. Others I was not assigned but heard they were classics so I read them anyway. I liked all of them except Catcher in the Rye as he seemed to whine throughout the entire book.

I love those books as well. Have you read other John Irving works? I really enjoyed "A Prayer for Owen Meany" and "The Hotel New Hampshire". Also Donna Tart's "A Secret History" and another by her with "Little Friend" in the title but I can't remember the whole title.:confused3 Other modern books I have loved include "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen and "The Stolen Child" by Keith Donohue.:thumbsup2
