I love my cats

I have to keep saying that over and over to remind myself just how much I really do love them.. when Im not this mad at one of them!!!

We keep their litter box pretty clean..even when we have let it go, they use it and dont complain (much)... BUT

if there is a throw rug within a mile radius they will find it and use it!!!

I have gotten used to the fact that I cant keep a decorative bathmat our bathroom. If I put one down in front of the shower, one of them (which one I dont know) will pee on it. I figured it was only because it was a rug on a rug because they dont bother the kitchen throw rug.

But now they have gone too far!!! I bought a pretty wool rug for the front guest bathroom. It was $20 and matched the decor. Its been there for 6 months.. no worries.. until yesterday. Jeff went in there and said Boy it stinks in here....

YUP.. someone decided it needed christening and peed on it. Now how in the world do I get cat pee out of a wool rug??? Its stiff so I cant wash it.... :( and using Natures Miracle makes it stink for along time while its neutralizing the odor... any other suggestions? Or is that about the only thing that will get rid of the smell..and does it REALLY work?

OK.. cat venting over

Can't help you with the smell. I have a cat who will pee on anything that is lying on the bathroom floor. Weird.

I have a female cat that would go through stages of peeing on rugs and even clothes if my kids left them on the floor. I figured out why and when she would do this. If I or my kids had another cats scent on us. My kids will go over their friends houses who also have cats. Or sometimes even if it was a dog, like when a friend would stop by with their dog. Even though my cat is a female, she is "marking" her territory, like male cats often do.

Do you think this could be the problem with your cat? Or did you have a new addition to your family? (pet or baby)

Try the Oxy Clean spray! We got this for the puppy when he was still having accidents, and it seemed to get not only the stain, but the smell as well!

Good luck!

No new pets or family members... this peeing on rugs is a long time thing for one of them.

Up until now its only been the throw rug in our bathroom that Ive had to stop using.... Im sure someone must have thought the kitty box wasnt up to snuff so they went elsewhere..

Something else that the vet told me was that maybe it was the kitty litter. They suggested I try another type. One of my cats has trouble using the box if it isn't clean enough for her. I do keep it clean, but apparently, not clean fast enough for her, so she will bug me until it is cleaned.

As for what would work to clean the rug, I heard white vinegar and water may work and I also found this info:

Food spills/Pet urine
Of the most common spills, urine presents the most severe problem. It can cause severe color run in the rug, and the odor can be very hard to remove or disguise. Urine can also chemically damage the structure of a rug by making the foundation hard and less supple, and the presence of urine in a rug can help attract moths. Repeated wettings can cause the foundation of the rug to loose mechanical strength to the point where the rug cracks and breaks when rolled or folded.

In case of a food spill or urine on a rug, the problem is much more easily handled if the spot is treated promptly, before the spill is allowed to dry. Blot up as much liquid as possible with paper towels or a clean, white cloth. Try to rinse out as much of the spill as possible.

A smaller rug can be taken outside and rinsed with a hose and cool water (try not to saturate the whole rug--it will take much longer to dry if you do). With a larger carpet, the corner or edge can be laid in a plastic dishpan and saturated with cool water or a bucket or plastic garbage can can be placed under the wet area of the carpet and cool water poured through the rug (make a hollow in the carpet over the container before you pour, and don't exceed the capacity of the container under the rug!). Add about 1 cup of white vinegar per gallon to the rinse water--vinegar helps prevent colors from running and will help neutralize the urine odor.

After the rug has been rinsed, blot dry and sponge with rug shampoo or with the solution given below. Let dry thoroughly (drying a wet area of a larger carpet can be hastened by arranging the carpet so that air can circulate both top and bottom--drape the end of the carpet across a lawn chair, or put a sawhorse or painted bench under the rug in the area of the wet spot).

I thought I had the only cat that liked bathmats or towels in the bathroom! I've had cats all my life and this is the first one that had this issue. She has an entire backyard and two clean litterboxes!

Thanks for the cleaning tips everyone....I'm gonna go check the bathroom...

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one having kitty problems (well, okay - not really "glad" :) ). I just spent over $200 last week to find out that one of my 2 brother cats doesn't have a health problem causing his urinating/spraying around the house. I can't even use rubber-backed bath mats or kitchen mats anymore. But I have been using the hotel kind of bath mats (like towels) with success. They don't seem to pee on those, and they are easy to wash. I guess I'll have to use those from now on.

Our cats never did this until we did a remodeling project last year. And we never had this problem with cats when I was growing up, and my mom's cats don't do it now. But I guess it is common. Our vet (who just sees cats) is having the same kitty woes with her own kitty :cat:.

one of our three cats has a penchant for peeing on throw rugs. I just don't use them. I like having them by the door in the winter so that shoes don't make a mess. I've turned to towels.

Same thing in the hall bathroom. Small throw rug gets hit every six months. Throw it in the washer and he seems to forget.

The regular carpet seems immune as does a plush throw in the master bath. It seems to be a texture thing.

The other problem I have is the same cat peeing around our shoes in the basement. It's concrete and there's a grand collection of shoes that get kicked off down there. After we returned from a Disney vacation last fall I noticed the smell and found a stiff (ick!) shoestring. Some checking and yep, he'd been peeing on the floor. I put up some racks and getting the shoes off the floor solved the problem I'm sure we were tracking in a scent that he needed to compete with .

So that's my theory, scent and texture rule his brain.

My vet recommended and I've had great luck with a product called Anti-Icky Poo. Really takes care of the odor.

I am really surprised - I never heard of cats peeing on mats/rugs before! My cat (knock on wood) has never peed anywhere but his litter box, so I feel bad for those of you with this problem. I guess I should count my lucky stars.;)
