PENSACOLA, Florida (AP) -- Nice shootin', Rex!

A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver's trigger.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn't find them a home, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies -- one in his arms and another in his left hand -- when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff's report said.

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's home, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.

The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

I just sent this article around to all my friends. its awful 3 of the pups died, but I'm so happy that that jerk got what was coming to him!

Hooray for the puppy! I hope the NRA offers it an honorary membership. Too bad it didn't reach the trigger sooner to save the other 3.

As for the man, he's a shoo-in for a nomination for the 2004 Darwin Awards.

Awesome. That gun has never been put to better use.

I hope the publicity for this story ensures a loving home for the pups who survived.

Good for that pup... It's the perfect punishment for that man without a heart.
I hope the puppy gets a few extra treats for his heroic actions!!! hehe

Sorry Dr. Q, but the pup would have to aim lower to qualify this jerk for a Darwin - one of the requirements is that your stupidity must remove you from the gene pool.

I'm sorry guys, maybe I'm the only one that feels this way but I think both of these comments are over the top. I'm an animal lover as anyone that knows me will tell you but I do not equate the life of a human with the life of an animal. I don't think the man should be shot whether he killed puppies or not. And actually, I'm not sure that shooting a puppy in the head is that much different than putting a needle in it's veins which is exactly what would happen if someone took puppies like that to our local animal control facility. I see the difference when dealing with humans (I don't think the death penalty should be carried out by shooting people and I think lethal injections are definitly preferable if anything can be preferable in that situation) but animals don't understand guns or death so I really don't see much difference there.

I saw this on the news and it thrilled me!!!!!

Way to go puppy!!!!! I would sure love to be that puppy's new mommy he would be pampered and spoiled for the rest of his life!

While its true that animal life is not as important as human life, there were other choices that man could have taken. What he did was despicable and I'm tired of seeing animals abused by humans because "they are just animals."

I say way to go puppy.

Very sad about the 3 little puppies that died. But that guy got what was coming to him.

Don't they have pounds or Humaine Societies there ? Seems he had other, possibly better choices! (Add in the paper, sign out front... etc...)

While human lives are more important than animals' lives (but in this case?) this jerk could have done things differently. There are many other things he could have done to help the pups, not kill them. I feel that he got what he deserved. Way to go pup! I hope he is suitably punished and not allowed to have any more animals.
