I love credit cards so much!

Just attached my N&F certificate to a ressie for the Courtyard in Lake Placid. Category actually went down on this one - would not have been able to use it under the "old" categorization of a Cat 6, but it went to a Cat 4, so my former Cat 1-5 cert (now 1-4) worked! And it didn't take the rep too long. Also attached my annual free night to a stay in a couple of weeks - I booked 2 rooms in NYC, but when booking 2 rooms, it wouldn't let me use my free night cert. Rep got that sorted out too.

I also asked about the new "rewarding events" program, and the new rule that you only get elite night credit for the first meeting you do in a year. Since I already did a meeting this year, I wouldn't get elite night credit if I did another one (used to be a way to get 10 nights towards elite status). So sorry folks, the Dischurners convention is off. Or at least postponed until January...

So, whats the violence/ickyness factor with Jack Ryan? I'm kind of a wimp about blood, so I like to have a heads up before trying a new series. Also, how appropriate would it be to watch with a teenaged girl? We're always looking for something to watch together, but its kinda tough to find stuff that works. We did Lost in Space, which worked well. K, now I really sound like a wimp! DH and I watched a bunch of the Americans this summer (while our teen was away), and I thought that was good (although the ickyness factor got to me a few times). That is not a show we are watching as a family anytime soon!

It would be rated mature or R for the violence, nudity/sex and a tiny bit of.swearing. I am only 3 eps in but didn't think the violence was bad, I've seen way worse in movies. The nudity without the sex would be fine but there's one scene that I don't know about, ot depends on what else she's seen. You're also talkong with someone that's parents let her watch good morning vietnam in 2nd grade so...

If I'm considering staying at a couple of Hyatts next year, would it make sense to apply for the Chase Hyatt card so I can save my URs for other redemptions? Does anyone have the card and have an opinion on it?

Love my Hyatt card and the redemptions I've been able to do. It's a keeper because the af is low and the free night is worth more. Though I do have the $75 af and I don't think you can get that one any more, but even at 95 which I think is the new one it's worth it. I just don't have reason tl upgrade.

DPs indicate that a gift card purchased from the front desk of a Marriott hotel will trigger the $300 credit.
right..... but I want a gc I can use at swolphin, so that would have to be SPG brand(for now) and if the t&C says either brand, I'm wondering about the credit if I can track down a SPG brand gc

I was looking at that hotel in Lake Placid as a possible redemption for my certificate if I can't upgrade or don't decide to cancel it! Have you stayed there before?

Just got an email for 10% cash back at shop rite with chase pay in q4 with the freedom.

Guess I’ll be taking the drive to shop rite a few times for gift cards.

Same, just jumped over to announce it when I saw the notification on my phone... hadn't even read the email. But since I got a call while I was typing, I decided to check it out.

It's 10% back for the month of Oct (10/1-10/31) - 5% back up to a max of $400 at Shoprite when checking at with Chase Pay on top of the 5% CF quarter for Chase Pay purchases.
Now the 5% is on top of the normal 1% if you 1) forget to activate your quarterly categories or 2) max out the combined categories during the promo period ( o_O ) for a total of 6%.

Edit: and for the ShopfromHome folks it works online too.

I have kind of a general question: which form of credit card "currency" is best for which transfer-partner situation? I understand part is very subjective depending on your travel habits and needs, but is there a THIS is better for THAT kind of thing? For example, I know UR--->Hyatt beats UR--->Marriott is good because the Hyatt point requirements are low.

Chase UR?
Amex MR?
Citi TYP?

We only have UR now and are thinking about expanding to MR in light of the changes to PRG---4x grocery would be really valuable for us (plus omg Shake Shack :teeth:) I see the 50K offer incognito.

I’m a big believer in diversifying your points. It gives you options in picking your airlines and hotels, paying with points as a cash booking or transferring points for award seats and stays.

As already mentioned, MRs are particularly good for transfers to their airline partners, and there are a lot of great international carriers. Amex also runs MR transfer bonus promos frequently, and you can expect transfer bonuses to most of the major airlines for several weeks every year. There also seems to be a lot more "sweet spot" airline redemptions with MR points. However, MR is sorely lacking in hotel transfer partners. They have three: Hilton, SPG/Marriott, and Choice hotels, and not one offers particularly good value (I think MR to Hilton is something like 1 MR:2 HH!). Paying with points on the Amex Travel portal can be a lot harder to understand than on the UR travel portal. MR are worth 1 cent per point toward airfare, but only about 0.75-0.85 cents per point for hotels, vacations or cruises packages, and car rentals. But if you have a Biz Plat, and pay with points for airfare on your selected airline in any class, or any other airline in business or first class, you'll be rebated 35% of your points back (getting you 1.54 cent per point value). MRs are worth only 0.6 cent per point as a statement credit, but if you get a Charles Schwab Platinum card then you can cash out at 1.25 cent per point.

Chase's UR system is easy to understand. All their UR-earning cards get you 1 cent per point as a cash redemption, but the Freedom cards get you 1 cent per point towards all travel on the UR portal, the CSP and CIP get you 1.25 cent per point towards all travel on the UR portal, and the CSR gets you 1.5 cent per point towards travel on the UR portal. A lot of times, particularly if I haven't stalked saver fares early enough, I'll find booking travel with UR points on the portal (as a revenue booking) to be a better value than transferring points to an airline frequent flyer program for award seats. Chase also has a good number of airline transfer partners, and URs transfer to United and Southwest, which aren't on MR. However, I don't think I've ever seen UR offer any transfer bonus promotions like MR and TYP. I think everyone's favorite UR hotel transfer partner is Hyatt, which offers really good value. Although both MR and UR transfer to SPG/Marriott, most people value 1 UR and MR > 1 Marriott point.

I can't say much about Citi TYP. I have one TYP-earning card, my second oldest, which I use once a year to keep it active. TYPs are hard to earn! Chase has a lot of UR earning cards, and Amex has a lot of MR earning cards, and their rules make these cards pretty easy to get to build up your UR and MR stashes with signup bonuses and bonus categories. Citi’s TYP cards, I think, have much stricter velocity limits. I think I redeemed my paltry stash of TYPs once for an Amazon gift card. D'oh!

The other major flexible point currency is Marriott points. When Marriott absorbed the SPG program, they left SPG's airline transfer program mostly intact, and the major difference is you have to multiple 1 old Starpoint by 3, so Marriott points transfer to most of their airline programs at 3:1, with a 5,000 miles bonus when you transfer 60,000 Marriott points. So every 60,000 Marriott points transferred will in most cases get you 25,000 airline miles. Marriott’s air and hotel travel packages used to be a good value, but were nerfed with the merger. However, you can still find good redemption value for Marriott points at their hotels, particularly before peak pricing and new Cat. 8 kick in next year.

Chase UR is like u said hyatt. for best redemption that is the way to go. The 2nd option is def United. They cover the majority of *A partners. the rest is just okay. BA is worth mentioning for its cheap domestic flights via AA but BA is a partner to basically all programs.
Amex MR like what has been mentioned is that it has bonuses sometimes to the programs. one example is the BA currently which is 40% bonus. MR's best redemption is to Japan via ANA. Its better than the virgin atlantic route.
Citi TYP doenst have a specific sweet spot but it carries one of the most asian airlines out of the 3 programs.

your also missing one other program which is the Marriott program. although its not worth a lot, its got over 40 airlines to transfer to as well as the one of the biggest hotel chains.

My wife knows kung fu and can be pretty deadly with a rose gold metal card.
deadly in the arts of kung fu?
or deadly in the arts of a depleting bank account? ;)

edit: if i wasnt making snarky remarks at @Lain , i would have beaten him to posting... :P

So Monday I met my SPG Lux spend. I still haven't seen my 100,000 points post. It was all legitimate spending.

Oh--the $5,000 included my membership fee. I guess I need to keep spending!
met my spendings 9/20, points posted 9/24.
closing statement was 9/18. hope that helps!

I haven't. DH is planning a photography trip to the high peaks, and it was the most convenient option that worked with my cert. I'm hoping to join him, for at least part of the trip, but we'll have to see how work goes. Planning to go in November, so I'll do a review if I get to go.

Man, I really really want a Freedom. But I'm probably going to PC one of our CSRs to get one, rather than applying, so the earliest I can do that is February. The category FOMO is getting to me!

This is for everyone with a CF? Not targeted? No email for me yet.

I was like, "That wasn't the procedure for CPR in the 80's!!!"

That’s me in any medical series. ER, Grays Anatomy, etc. Although I kind of enjoy the critiquing, no one likes to watch with me. Lol.

LOL! DH won't watch any surgery oriented shows and my father was annoyed by ER because they showed someone intubating right handed "it's a left handed instrument." So he watched it once and that was it. I still really like Gray's (years ago) and ER (because, c'mon George Clooney!) and ignore the medical aspect.

So you use your MR only for airline partners? Do you find one airline or another to be a better choice? (I can't remember if you are a Delta hostage, sorry) I'm wondering if X airline is better for Europe using one type (UR/MR) and if Y airline is better for Asia. Or maybe it just depends lo

I am a Delta hostage, essentially. I have used MRs to transfer to Delta to top them off if using for a reward. I'm looking at either transferring to Flying Blue to fly home from Paris next fall or Virgin to fly to London next fall, sort depending on availability of course. My experience has been MRs and URs are fairly easy to transfer for Europe travel...I like URs for their transfer ability to United (which I find the easiest to search since it shows multiple *Alliance partners) and MRs for transfer to DL, AS, Avios, OR as I'm hoping for my Australia trip, using the points through Amex's travel portal (and getting miles credited). I'm sure TYP would have been, too, if I hadn't gotten so disgusted with their IT and just said "forget it." Honestly, travel using any of the currencies is easy to Europe (well, except for SW of course).

I really do not understand how points are earned on Marriott stays. SPG was so straightforward.

We stayed 6 nights on points, so we paid $189 in resort fees. Then we had $254 we charged to the room from the restaurants and gift shops.

I earned 2,496 Points = 1,597 Base + 399 Elite (25% for gold) + 500 Extra (assume this is welcome bonus)

So I earned points on $159.70 worth of charges?
