Approved for Barclaycard Arrival Plus! Automatic approvals really are just so nice. :cool1:
I was too cheap to pay the extra $15 to have the card expedited so hoping it will come quickly so I can get started with using Plastiq to pay the mortgage, loan, etc.

Thanks @striker1064 for talking about it with the DVC dues and @Lain for the advice on the Plastiq masterpass promotion. That is what got me to start thinking about getting it.

@afan that Marvel card is the Disney card for just Marvel fans. Kind of funny. It is a Mastercard...those are kind of hard to find so that for a no annual fee is not too bad!

I only kind of wish this kid had posted on r/churning for the popcorn::popcorn:: but it shows what being young and not educated with how all this works can do https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Cr...i-Won-t-Budge-on-Denial-Decision/td-p/5345093https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Cr...i-Won-t-Budge-on-Denial-Decision/td-p/5345093

Will have to check back and see if he posts what happened :happytv:
When I click on those it just shows me a generic site page for my FICO. Do you have to have an account to read it?

It seems that if you click the link it takes you to their page but if I copy and paste it takes to the actual post. It must be how they have something set up, so weird. I tried to fix it but can only get it to work by copy and paste. You don't need to log in to anything, having read more I think I'd rather be on r/churning getting downvoted than on that forum :)

It totally is and it's not a bad card at all for no fee, even if you aren't really a marvel fan but just want cash back and would use the cat's a lot.

Trying to decide when DH should go for CIP. He is 4/24 last Chase was Marriott premier 7/13/18. His other Chase cards are FU (3x promo)5/31/18 and CSP 6/17. His credit score has taken a slight hit (792) I think from a recent HELOC and carrying a balance on the FU with 0%. I’m think December at the earliest?
Would prob be safe to get an amex biz (thinking Hilton) in meantime to occupy if we are looking for an MSR?

I don’t know why but I felt compelled to look further into it. Maybe because have been looking for a MasterCard to use with Plastiq.

I am not getting it but objectively speaking 3% cash back on movie theaters and theme parks (I assume Disney) is actually pretty good. I think you should do it @afan! It would be a whole new row for @Lain and his spreadsheet!

First off, :welcome: to this thread. It is a wonderful group who do their best to help and share.

I'll try to answer your questions the best I can:

1) Don't know but it's worth a try. If it's been your address of record there may not be a problem. I know I've had my parents added as AUs and the cards sent to my address without issue. I think it's worth a shot for 100 MRs (or skymiles or URs).

2) Chase can indirectly offer redemption on American via their travel portal (which is 1.5 cents/UR if you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve or 1.25 cents via Chase Sapphire Preferred). If you're interested in Chase Sapphire Products (or really, any chase products) conventional wisdom would say get the Chase cards first since Chase has the infamous 5/24 rule.

3) 100K MRs are great, BUT I would urge you to consider Amex co-branded cards if you just want skymiles. There is currently a 70,000 skymile offer on the American Express Delta Platinum $195 fee, $3,000 spend. Add in a delta gold skymiles card a couple of months later and you'll have anywhere from 100,000-130,000 skymiles (the gold amex offer can range between 30,000-60,000). Also, after the Annual Fee for the skymiles amex plat posts you earn a companion fare which is basically buy one rt ticket take a companion free...so you could fly with your mother somewhere round trip in the US in a year from when you get the card (I keep both the personal and the biz just perk).

The Amex Plat is great and I love it but ...

--it has a $550/AF
--there is a transfer charge to Delta (basically a tax, it's small- $0.0006/mile but still a fee
--there are benefits in the AF that you might not be able to maximize overseas

Finally, Skymiles are tricky. There are no published charts and no seemingly rhyme or reason to what they charge. ComfortPlus can range from 1 way fares to LHR from ATL (I don't know where you're flying from) from 50,000 skymiles to 125,000 skymiles-one person one way. Premium Economy/Select holds stead on Virgin Atlantic at 55,000 skymiles but is often not available or sold out. So having as many skymiles as possible is a good thing.

There are lots of articles on the internet on how to best leverage 100,000 MRs, I encourage you to read them and see if MR currency v. straight skymiles v. Chase URs are the best for you. I fly Delta almost exclusively and I try to keep 300,000 skymiles around "just in case." I also have 600,000 MRs for an aspirational trip. That said, American, United, and URs can get you to London (not sure where you and your mother would be flying from) easily as well.

Hope this helps :)

hello! I dont think any of us have any experience with overseas and US credit cards. I do have friends who do this. One of them being a very good expert at it. I have learned a few things about what its like being overseas.

1. yes, as long as you have good credit, u can do that.
2. for American domestic, i usually recommend looking into BA Avios that redeems for AA. This will get u a good deal if not from the Chase UR portal. Any Sapphire card would do, earning power isnt as good though for chase. You should also look into AA cards. just make sure they dont have FTF.
3. Your biggest problem with MR is how likely you can find places that take Amex in Japan. I know the last time i went, i had a hard time even finding places to swipe my cards... let alone amex. I could be wrong in this context though, im not local there so i wouldnt know :] Also with London, u should consider flying into another European country and then taking the train into london. London's airport taxes are pretty extreme. ie, a 1st class ticket on BA will cost you 120k points + $1200 on taxes.
as for other recommendations, have you considered Cathay Pacific? The Cathay Pacific card is unique because it earns 1.5 per point on travel swipes(out of the US). its basically a 1.5x card for you in Japan.
Thank you both very much! :) It looks like I have a lot of reading & considering in my future. We would be flying from one of the NYC area airports with a preference for JFK. It might sound a little weird but my mom hates LGA because you basically take off over water and it freaks her out. EWR is okay but we would rather not hoof it out there if we don't have to.

I will have to look into how a benefit like the BOGO RT domestic ticket can be used & whether or not it can be gifted, because I wouldn't have the opportunity to use it myself.

re: Amex/CCs in Japan, you are correct in saying that cash is king, but major cities do anticipate CC usage more often these days, and any venue that accepts CCs will generally accept them all. I've never encountered one that took Visa/MC but not Amex. I know this is not true in most other countries because I've encountered that situation multiple times back in the US and the owner of a chocolate shop in Paris just about threw the card back across the counter at me while saying "AMEX NO!" :lmao: I would say the number of venues that accept CCs has gone up by at least 50% since I first studied here in 2014.

I have also never heard of the Cathay Pacific card. More research to do :)

I'm not looking to get any cards any time soon, unless I get the AS BofA biz card I applied for today, until I have a job again :) And I'm not done with chase and don't spend enough at either of those two cat's for it to be beneficial. I just thought it was interesting and not something we've seen before. I do think it's something to keep in our back pockets for when people are looking for a card because for the right person it could be very useful.

OK @striker1064 your DVC on Amex setup is intriguing and also highly confusing. I've never done any sort of self referral with Amex so I am having a hard time figuring out which cards can refer to what. You would need all these cards in hand before the purchase so how soon do you start collecting these in prep for a purchase? Would you mind a little ELI5 :teacher::blush:?

Lets assume I wanted to make a 30k DVC purchase. My current Amex cards are BCE, Ameriprise Plat, and SPG. I also have a p2 with only a SPG.
You might find this DISchurners thread helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/DISchurner...rican_express_platinum_card_for_schwab_guide/

It's 3 months old but most of the info there should still be valid.

Do you mean with Schwab? Ok, I can give you the outline of what I did. It's nothing special and most likely there aren't many people who would do the same thing, because although you can cash out MRs for 1.25cpp, you can probably get higher valuations with international air travel. But this is what we wanted to do, so it made sense for us.

The first thing you want to do is open a Schwab account. Doctor of Credit has everything you need here. You can open a brokerage account only if you want (because that's all you need for a cash out), but getting the $100 bonus requires keeping $1,000 in the brokerage account. I didn't want to do that, so I opened both brokerage and checking. If you do that, you can leave literally $1 in each account and wait 30 days, and Schwab will post a $100 bonus to your account. That's it. It's really that easy. Again, DoC with the details here.

Now, the thing is, I did the Amex MR Schwab thing and it was great. But since then, Amex has been getting more restrictive (the anti-churning denial-of-bonus popups, etc). So I'm really not sure if this is all still going to work or how far it will go. You likely can get at least a few cards, but Amex is undoubtedly going to slow you down with denials.

So, you've got your Schwab checking and brokerage account open, waiting for your $100 bonus. The next step is to open the Schwab Amex Platinum card. This is the key for cashout. You cannot transfer MRs to Schwab without this card. From there, just start opening the highest offers you can find until you've knocked out your spend.

With a $30k purchase and the cards you already have, here's what I would do, in this order. I'll list the bonus, spend requirement, and annual fee (if applicable).
  • Schwab Platinum - 60k MR, $5k spend, $550 AF
  • Business Platinum 100k MR, $10k spend, $450 AF
  • Business Gold Rewards - 50k MR, $5k spend, AF waived first year - SELF REFERRAL 20k
  • Business Green Rewards - 5k MR after first purchase - SELF REFERRAL 20k
  • Vanilla Platinum - 100k MR (if you can get it, otherwise 75k through incognito), $5k spend, $550 AF
  • Premier Rewards Gold - 50k MR (available via incognito), $2k spend, AF waived first year
  • Green Card - 25k MR (available via incognito), $1k spend, AF waived first year
  • Ameriprise Gold Card 25k MR, $1k spend, AF waived first year
All of those cards get you to $29k total spend. If you need a 0% for 15 months on part of the purchase, you can substitute the Blue for Business Plus card (20k/$5k or $3k if you can get it, otherwise 10k/$3k via referral). I would start removing cards from the bottom until you get the amount you need to float - for example, if you need to put $10k of your purchase on a 0% card, remove the Ameriprise Gold, Green Card, PRG, and Vanilla Platinum.

The Business Platinum is another important card because you can now refer yourself for the Business Gold and Business Green cards, and get the referral bonus. The crazy thing is, you will get a 20k MR bonus for each as if you were opening another Business Platinum even though you aren't. Those are free points. So the way that works is, get your Business Platinum, add it to your online account, copy your referral link, open it incognito, and scroll to the bottom (below the APPLY button) to change the application to one of the other cards.

If you do all of that, you'll have 415k MR from sign-up bonuses, 40k MR from self-referring, and 29k MR from the spend required to get the sign-up bonuses, for a total of 484k MR. Through Schwab, that can be cashed out at 1.25cpp, for a total of $6,050. Net of annual fees ($550/$450/$550), you're at a total of $4,500. I know you're losing a lot of cash here in AFs, but it's also important to note the Platinum cards and the Premier Rewards Gold have additional ancillary benefits that help offset the fee (such as the airline credits).

$4,500 may not seem like a huge net amount after all that work, but it's essentially a 15% discount on $30k. I'd take 15% off DVC. Additionally, this is assuming you're buying direct from Disney. This doesn't apply if you're going resale because I don't think any of the companies let you pay with a credit card. Disney does. You also do not need these cards all in hand at the time of purchase. Disney will let you put some amount down - probably 10-20% (so $3k-6k) - and pay the balance over 90 days.

Hope this helps!

I love this post. We’ve flirted with the idea of buying DVC over the years, but can’t quite commit to it. But when you, and @hulagirl the other day, lay it out like you do, it’s hard not to play around with it in my head again.

My one nitpick is that referrals from the Biz Plat dropped down to 15k MR in early August. They’ll probably go back up to 20k MR at some point.

Office Depot/Max: Purchase $300 In Mastercard Giftcards & Get $15 Off Instantly (Valid 9/9-9/15)

Buying 2x $200 MCGCs should make this a slight moneymaker. (People are waiting to see if the prior glitch that took $15 off each $200 card is still working.) They’ll be fun to use on the Plastiq Masterpass promo. Unfortunately, OD/OM shares L3 data, so this deal isn’t ideal for spending towards Amex MSR. If you have a CIC, this deal will earn you 5x UR.

ETA: “Last time extra discounts were happening when inputting your rewards number etc. but that is being reported as not the case this time around.”

My CSP statement closed yesterday. I was hoping to see the 50,000 URs in my account this morning. Nope. Pending for next month? Nope. It's been almost a month since I met the MSR.

I didn't know about the Biz Plat referrals, so thank you for that update!

I also want to stress for anyone considering this - don't make this a part of your funding. Just consider it a rebate on the money you already have and are spending. The reason I say that is because Amex has changed so much even in the 6 months since I did this, and I do not think it will be possible to get all of these cars in such a short time anymore. But it's worth taking as far as you can!

I would think after 3 months or so.....November but does not hurt to wait to December if that fits better with your meeting the spend

I have a few questions:
- Is Plat Biz 100k offer still available? I thought that offer ended.
- Our DVC guy told us we had to pay balance off within 30 days to any interest. Did he misspeak and I can request that when I call him tomorrow to purchase?
- Also, should be negotiating, like asking them to throw in some one-time bonus points or gift cards or something?
- I checked my AmEx offers and have one for 50k MR on PRG for $1k spend. Is that a good offer?

Thanks! Trying to come up with our plan.

I can only answer the PRG question...that’s a great offer! Run, don’t walk to apply :)

My understanding is you can still call Amex generally and ask for the Biz Plat offer. I'm not sure if it's targeted or anyone can get it though.

As for 30 days... I dunno. Our guide allowed us to put a portion down, then pay off the balance in 3 equal payments over 90 days. No interest. I'd ask specifically about this.

I don't think there's any negotiating on DVC. You can ask, but my understanding is it's only the public promotions on what's being sold at the time.

Hi...can’t help with the credit card questions.sorry.....but...when I purchased direct direct from Disney I had to pay the balance in 30 days or go through their financing
They also don’t throw in bonus points...if you purchase a October or December use year now your still in the 2017 use years for those months so you get 2017 points and will get 2018 in either October or December this year....just make sure you ask them to bank the 2017 points
