I love credit cards so much!

Your husband is 4/24 and doesn’t have a Card dropping off until Dec 2019. At 4/24 he could potentially get a bunch more biz cards and then do a double dip with Chase to go to 6/24. I can't imagine this one United offer is worth more to you than a CIU, CIC AND 2 more personal Chase cards (1 of which could be a United card)...

What cards would the double dip with Chase be?
So, assuming he is approved for the CIP, we then apply for CIU, then the CIC. Then what? United and for example?

Thanks for the info. Glad I posted. Shiny new objects are distracting me.

Of course you’d need to spread those applications out - you don’t want to hit Chase too fast. Maybe you do a CIP now, hit CIC in Dec then CIU in Apr. Of course you can alternate cards for you in there too to help stretch out the timeline.

Then The double dip at 4/24 can be any two personal Chase cards you’re still interested in. United and Freedom? Maybe Southwest if that’s of interest... If you play his cards right (pun intended) you could double dip in mid-late 2019 and then you have 3 cards drop off by Jan 2020 and you could do a CSR/CSP double dip again for him in spring 2020.

This is the value of a long range plan and sticking to it. No shiny things...all strategy!

Within 24 Months Me:

6 - Chase Sapphire Preferred Jul-16

1 - Chase Marriott Premier Plus upgrade May 2018

2 - Chase Marriott Dec-17

3 - Chase Unlimited Dec-17

5 - Chase United MPE Nov-17

i think your pushing your boundaries with Chase for yourself... going over 4/12 is a very common trigger.
your husband may be good for 1 or 2 cards. but his is also getting there too.

My daughter made a similar comment when I gave her one of my metal cards, lol! Something to the tune of, 'I'll have to get one of those for me.' She has her own cards but I guess they are all plastic. According to my older daughter, the Ritz card is the snazziest.
I’ve never had a metal one before. I still technically don’t because it’s dh’s card lol

If the SPG points were in your mom's SPG loyalty account, then if you cancel the Dolphin now, those points (4 x 10,000 = 40,000 pts) should still go back to her account. SPG points are kept active by staying at a SPG property sometime in the preceding 12 months OR if you have an SPG credit card that you earn points by making purchases with it (and points get transferred after statement close). So if they are saying that her points will expire end of Oct, that means the last time she had any earning activity was in Oct 2017.

If those points are back in her account by 8/18 then they will automatically convert to Starriott points on that day when the programs merge. 40,000 --> 120,000 points. By then the Dolphin will cost 50,000 in the new currency, so she could book 2 nights if those award nights are available. Another (much better) option would be to use the refunded points to book 2 nights at the current rate of 12K/nt (do it BEFORE 8/18), leaving her 16K in her SPG account that will convert to 48K Starriott points (almost another night at the Dolphin!). If you want to go that route, I would do it ASAP. I just checked and only saw award nights available for 10/28-30, the surrounding days were grayed out.

My gut feeling is that the points in her account won't expire at end of Oct, just because it will be a new program on 8/18 and I think that will reset the clock. I don't know that for sure though.

I haven't seen the new rules about transferring Starriott points, but Marriott currently allows transfers up to 50K points in a calendar year for $10 (free for Gold & Plat members) even if you're not in the same household.

Thanks, this helps alot!

When a credit card offer is to spend $2000 in the first three months, is that literally 3 months from the date (Aug 11 to Nov 11) or 90 days or...?

Well, without me asking, the Amex rep that I talked to after getting my SPG biz says to me that I have 92 days to get the bonus, so since I applied on July 31, I would say she was counting - Aug -31 days, Sep -30 days and Oct -31 days for a total of 92. I often hear 115 days mentioned for Chase, so I would think it varies.

Marriott Provides Update On Existing Travel Packages - OMAAT

When our loyalty programs unify on August 18, our new Travel Package award chart here, will go into effect and members will be able to book for packages at all 6,700 of our hotels.

However, if you currently have a Travel Package Certificate that’s not yet attached to a hotel reservation, you have the following options:

  • If you know when you want to travel, make a new reservation or attach your certificate to an existing one prior to August 18, 2018.
  • If you are still trying to plan that perfect trip, you can hold onto the certificate and will be able to add it to a reservation starting September 18, 2018.
Please note that you will not be able to modify your certificate for an existing reservation or attach it to a new one between August 18 and September 18, 2018.

It sounds like floating certificates will not be converted back to points, but rather mapped somehow to the new categories.

Thanks so much for the update on this. Apparently, according to the comments in the article, some people are getting emails about it, too. I have an unattached certificate and have not yet received an email.

I'm glad that the rumor that they would be converted into points automatically has now been debunked, but it would be nice to know how the categories will convert after 9/18! I have a category 6 that I could attach, but I'm not 100% sure on dates and would rather wait. The hotel is moving down to a category 4 after the merger so I think I'll hold off booking anything as possible remapping might give me some points back.

Ugh. Marriott won’t let me book a nights and flights. I don’t have enough points and they’ve disabled the systems allowing me to transfer DHs points which would give me enough for the package. So annoying.
I called 9 times to get this done. 2 times before end of July rest after. System down was a common answer. Call back in 2 days. 2 times I thought I was getting somewhere and I’d disconnect myself with the push buttons on the phone. Couple of times the person helping suddenly was gone and I was back in the waiting calls. My husband did have to
Be there to authorize but I got 192k on his moved to my 78496 and now the proud owner of one n&f cat 1-5 certificate on my Marriott acct and 120k SWRR which I have partially spent.

The offer was targeted to my husband and came up when he signed into his United account. I thought the Chase rule was 2/30 ? This would be his second application then. Would they deny him the CIP because of this United application? I guess the plan should be to keep him at 4/24.

On a personal credit card application, Chase may approve it if you’ve had no more than 2 applications in the past 30 days (2/30).

On a business card application, like the CIP, Chase may approve it only if you’ve had no other applications in the past 30 days (0/30). Because the CIP is still pending, and hasn’t been approved yet, DH needs to remain at 0/30. If DH applies and is approved for the United Explorer card, he will be at 1/30, and the CIP application will be DENIED.

More tragically, the United Explorer card will put DH at 5/24 and lock him out of the CIP, CIC, CIU, and most of Chase’s other valuable bonuses until January 2020. That’s potentially 180k UR worth of bonuses you’re giving up to go for a 60k United miles offer that’ll likely come around again.

You are currently locked out until January 2019, as long as you don’t get any more personal cards.

Update on contractor payment snafu! We are back from the boonies today. DH really wants to be sure our contractor gets paid pronto (he's like that - esp. when it comes to small businesses) so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on referring him to the CIP (even though it has only been 2 days since I dropped some of his credit limits - he was still under 60% of our all-in income number, esp. because I just cashed in some stock options which ups our income number a good bit).

Aaaand instant approval. So I'm hoping to have the CIP in hand by the end of this week (5 business days? Maybe?) then it will take a week or so to get the contractor paid. He still hasn't actually invoiced us yet because the town inspection is still pending. So he should still get paid pretty quick after the project is officially done.

This will net us another 120k UR points or so, between the bonus and the referral and the plastiq points, and I've already budgeted in the cash to pay for plastiq. So I'm feeling pretty pleased with this outcome.

Getting 10k on the Amex might still be a bit challenging, but we were talking about getting our older kid a new dresser (FYI- IKEA dresser + teenager = not a great idea), and then DH mentioned that it might be time to replace our living room set (the couches are 20 years old) and all of a sudden we might have a start on that 10k. I just have to stop being a cheapskate and be ok with spending some cash on furniture. For having been through 2 kids and 6 moves, our couches still look pretty good, but it might be time.

Anyway - its nice to be back, and I will hopefully actually get caught up on the board at some point...

Did see @SouthFayetteFan successfully double dipped, and his wife survived the flight - all great news. Will hopefully catch up on the rest at some point...

I SM'd Chase because I never got my $35 credit on my SW Plus card. They said they didn't see it and to email them a copy of the document stating the offer :badpc: I replied that a CSR offered it over the phone, guess we'll see what happens. This would make my math slightly less happy if I ever get an upgrade offer for the Priority card.

When did you do this? She said system will be down until merger happens. Errrr

I'm venturing into using points for airfare. I've only used SW points to book flights, never had enough anywhere else to do it before  Trying to wrap my mind around how and where to look. Especially with all the partner options.

I'm in practice mode waiting for flights for next year to be released, this way I have an idea of what I should look for when the schedule drops. It will be one-way ANC>PHL (or maybe ANC>SMF, alternate depending on how the routes and points work) so I started out with Google flights for a rough idea, AS seemed to have best prices cash so I started there and will branch out. Trying to understand the award space after following along here. If we want to fly First on AS it's min 30k AS points, but if it's a mixed carrier with AA, it's flat 25k AS. Same awards are 30k AA through AA.

First Q: What's the better value, figuring out how to get 25k AS or 30k AA? We've got none of either to start. (I forgot when they expired and totally missed keeping them active. :headache:) But I believe we have transfer partners for both.

Second phase, when I started looking at both sites I noticed the AA award flight on AS's site doesn't show up on AA's site. For this date, all the awards shown on AA have multiple connections so at least 2 stops. When I look at the AS site the AA award flight is much better. It's only 1 stop, the first leg on AS the second leg a non-stop on AA. I can only find this flight for cash on the AA site.

Second Q: Does this happen? Is this what people are saying when it's easier to see space on a partner site? Does that sound like I could really book that on points through AS?

Would still have to work out later if it's better to just book the cash price through Chase using UR. For the date I'm looking at right now as an example, it's not, but maybe opening prices will make it a closer call. And I still have to look other lines. So much to think about :scratchin

I don't feel like my profanity is over the top but considering I have worked on Labor and Delivery for 9 years my topics of conversation usually veer towards the inappropriate. I guess most people don't see/talk about anatomy in great detail regularly. Sometimes I forget when I am around 'new people' and I frequently leave thinking "definitely should have said that".

Lol I don't work in labor and delivery but I work in a field where I have a lot of similar anatomy discussions. My office is VERY profane, but it really is by nature of what we encounter through our jobs- not because of any one coworker. It's funny the things you start to think of as normal in a workplace after a while!

Chase said the same thing to me originally on my 20,000 point offer on the CIP after I made the initial request. I responded that the original CSR had offered it to me over the phone and the CSR I was talking to said that the original CSR had put the request in incorrectly and had it credited to me in the next week.

Phew! I feel like I got in just under the wire today, but I got my Disney room booked through Chase with the room offer and everything! When I get home I'll finish rearranging the other nights, mainly because I don't carry my Barclay card anymore :) I had to call from work because they close right when I get off (now), and it was busier than I thought I'd be so I didn't get to call until 4:15pm EST. And then I got someone who couldn't find the discount rate. So I utilized the magic of HUCA and got it!
