I love credit cards so much!

I was super excited to walk into a local burger joint and see a chase pay contraption at the register. When she said we owed $72 (!!!) for burgers and shakes I didn't flinch because I was about to get 350 points on my freedom. I showed her the app and asked how to make the machine work. She calls over another worker. "They don't work" the guys says. WWWHHHAATT!?! And to make matters worse, I had already send DH to the table with the kids, along with his CSR. So I used my CSP for a lowly 2x points. Uggghh. Life of a travel hacker I guess.:badpc:

Oh I hate that!

I think it was on here that I read Costco accepts Apple Pay. So when I was shopping there this week, I asked and Costco doesn’t; at least my store doesn’t, and I don’t see Costco listed on Apple site as somewhere I can use Apple Pay. I was prepared to use Apple Pay and didn’t have enough on a VCG purchased last month from Best Buy/Walmart during the Chase Pay 10x promo to cover my cart. Ended up charging a little over $100 on the CSR that was in my wallet for just 1x.

dont ask, notice. 90% of the time i ask if they accept apple pay, they always say no but on payment time, the nfc icon usually pops up. it has happened to me a few times already.

My primary goal last year was to diversify our wallets so that my wife and I could earn greater than 1x rewards points/miles on more of our spend. We wanted to be more aware of where our money was going, what credit cards offered spending bonuses in those categories, and generally be smarter with our money. The signup bonuses that came with new cards were really just a nice benefit. For the most part, we’ve far exceeded what we initially thought we’d get back in rewards, and now it kills me a little every time we’re not maximizing our spend.

Over Christmas vacation, we were at my SIL’s house and talked about the trips we’ve been able to take and are planning to take thanks to all the points we’re racking up. My wife got a call from her sister the other day asking, “what’s that card that’s getting you all those points?” And here’s where I’m so proud of my reluctant partner. My wife tells her sister, “well we have several different cards that we use depending on what the best bonuses are for what we’re buying, who we’re paying or where we’re shopping, and any special offers or promotions that might be going on.” My SIL says, “that sounds like a lot of work,” before changing the subject. Yes. Yes it is. But oh so worth it.

I think that warrants consideration...but don't just listen to us blindly either, lol. If you've done your research and know which cards work best for your goals don't be afraid to go for it even if it goes against conventional wisdom.

I appreciate the understanding that the conventional wisdom doesn't apply. I actually thought about it again and am thinking we might want the companion pass down the road a few years and I'm willing to gamble that it might be an option. I would rather wait for this cards until then. I think I will probably never move past the baby or toddler stage with this "hobby" so I am ok with a mild approach. I do have one question, is the $200 GC for a $500 minimum spend for the Disney Chase no fee card a pretty standard referral bonus?

Since you mentioned Discover in your original post, it seems cashback cards are something you would consider? Perhaps you could squeeze the Discover in between the Freedom and Disney. Discover and Freedom are essentially the same card with rotating 5x/5% categories. Obviously the difference lies with the Freedom UR being transferable to a CSP/CSR for 1.25/1.5x redemptions. However, the Discover IT does offer the doublecash back offer in your first year, effectively making it a 10% return card if you use the spend categories effectively. That might be worth considering in between the Freedom and Disney or consecutively with the Freedom (both options using the 4th slot), but does buy you some more time between Chase apps with the Freedom and Disney if you want to give some thought to whether you want to use your last slot on the Disney when it isn't a 5/24 card. Similarly, wholesale clubs are the 5x category this quarter for Discover so you can easily max that out at BJs/Sams.
Thanks for the suggestion. My Discover rarely comes into play these days, so I hadn't thought about any Discover products. The double cash back year is very intriguing. I will look into it!

For the no fee Disney, $200 for $500 I think is the best offer generally speaking. At the moment, it is only available as a public offer for the Disney premier (fee based version) and $100 for $500 was the best public offer when I got mine a couple years ago. Right now the public offer for the no fee disney is a $50 statement credit. So the referral offer has been the only way to get a better bonus on the regular version.

I think if the Freedom is one you are interested in, the Discover It with doublecash back definitely is worth looking into, essentially operating the same way, but the effective 10% in year one has been one of the main reasons people have been signing up. Happy researching! And never anything wrong with a "mild" approach. We've all been there ::yes::

What is nfc icon? I did look at the payment device myself and didn’t see anything about Apple or chase. Didn’t see it on either of their websites either, so I assumed the employees were right.

We do something like this each year. We look at where our balances in each program and what we have tentatively coming up and planned. Then we focus on which points to earn via shopping portals for the most part. Since we are both LOL/24 new Chase cards are not a consideration for the most part. We've only ever churned one Chase card and that is the BA card. So new credit cards tend to be based on opportunity. We have far beyond exceeded what we thought we'd get back in rewards. This hobby literally started out as an idea of how to get to Scotland so we could afford to do our first and only Adventures by Disney trip. We never intended to make this a hobby or lifestyle choice  Up until then our vacations were 4 or 5 days a year at WDW with DVC points and a Disney cruise paid with Disney Visa card reward dollars.

THIS. ::yes::...there's almost a sense of guilt

Yup! Even when I am making the spend for a new card I feel guilty using the new card instead of one that earns more points for whatever I am buying.

Nice to know when you are in the same boat lol. Even though I know the overall return of the purchase counting towards making the spend on a new card is higher, can't help after pulling out the new card, having buyers remorse. Its worse when you know you can make the spend without that purchase on the new card. This feels like a therapy session :hyper2::rotfl2:

So with his name as a user of my account he would get rejected for a CSR and CSP?

I am a AU on my husband's CSR, but I was able to use his link to get my own. I double dipped. I made sure I was approved for the CSR with his link before I used DIS link for the CSP. I am in the middle of my spend, so I can't tell you if I have gotten both bonuses yet. Fingers crossed it works!

EDIT - now that I read what I wrote, lol, this is not true. I WAS an AU on his CSP, but that got product changed to a CFU. I am not an AU on his CSR. Oops, sorry, carry on. Ignore me.

The $200 gift card bonus on the no annual fee Disney card has been reliably available for over 3 years via referrals. Prior to that the referrals had come and gone at various times.

Between my wife and I, we have taken advantage of that offer 6 times I believe (with 24 months in between each time).

I have wondered if I should remove myself as AU on cards even though they are old. My available credit on my credit report is almost double my DHs because I am a AU on a lot of his cards but he is not on any of mine.

Apple pay question- I went into the wallet app to see what's available thru there, one option I found was not apply pay, but apple store....is this the same thing? I get the feeling it's not,and my Iphone 5s is too old to support apple pay

No, it's not the same and I think that Apple pay was first used on iPhone6/6s so 5 doesn't support it (I believe one of the posts a while ago discussed this and it stuck in my head!).

We're going to ToysRUs to try to use our Apple Pay for a GOC card. Kind of excited to see if it works :)

It sounds like you are not getting Southwest now? I would just say make sure it works for you before you get the cards. Get on the site and see where you want to go and book flights. I had a SW card years ago and got miles, but then practically speaking flying anywhere from here on SW was a huge pain. It was more expensive and never non stop. So think about it...if flying Delta or another airline makes more sense then look into building miles with them.

I wouldn’t get the Disney until you are over 5/24. There is no reason too. I would get the Freedom and Freedom Unlimited first and increase your UR points. If Disney is your priority you can use UR to go to Disney. (See the just added thread from @SouthFayetteFan on Dischurners).
