I love credit cards so much!

Idk how accurate they are but this was an interesting article on SWA and Hawaii: http://beatofhawaii.com/southwest-hawaii-airline-update/

This is what I am waiting for. Was trying to configure a plan to use UR points through a different airline, but was excited to hear this news a few months ago. Not the most luxurious travel, but very economical and their RR plan is top notch. We are planning a trip summer 2019 and will probably go more often because of SWA.

I hope their entry drops prices too! The free checked luggage is huge for me. Everyone in my family has to check a bag when we take a trip of a week or longer. $50pp right there SWA will have against its competitors for us. Admittedly I'm hoping the other airlines drop prices since SWA doesn't service my local airport but if prices are good enough we'll drive to a SWA airport! Alas, there is a large party of me that isn't convinced SWA will enter all that low with the current HI airfare warfare going on right now (if TPG is to believed).
ETA: ROFL, I'm all party all the time!! I wish! *part

I've been trying to learn how to best utilize credit cards for travel, and some of you have been a terrific help. I'm pretty excited about this becoming a new hobby for me!

This month is super, super busy and I don't have a lot of time to devote to this right now; I'd planned to really dedicate a lot of time and effort to delving into this in February and get it all figured out (although that may be too ambitious, haha). But as it turns out, now is a good time to go ahead and get a new credit card because i have several large-ish purchases coming up that will help me meet the required spending amount.

The question is, what to apply for? I currently have (and forgive me, I'm not very credit-card savvy and don't even know what you're supposed to call some of them, so I'm just going to type what's printed on the card):

AmEx Preferred ( I think it may actually be called Blue Preferred, although it doesn't say "blue." It IS blue.)
Chase Sapphire Preferred (this also says Visa on it; I don't know if that matters)
Barclay Aviator AAdvantage (this one says Mastercard)

Also, my husband put me as an authorized user (I forget about these cards because I never use them) on the following accounts of his:

Citi AAdvantage (on the back it says World Elite Mastercard; again, I don't know if this matters)
Chase Marriott Rewards (Visa)

From what I've read here, it sounds like it was a really bad idea for him to have done that because apparently it counts as an account in my name.

But anyway, what card do you think I should get next? Also, one of my expenses is Disney APs. What is the best way to buy these? From what I've read (thanks, Calypso, if you're reading this!) it sounds like I should buy Disney gift cards from somewhere I'll get a lot of cash back. Right now my AmEx gives me 6% back at grocery stores, so I could buy a couple thousand dollars worth of Disney gift cards there to use for my APs and get the 6% cash back. But if I'm going to get a new card I probably need that expense to meet the minimum initial charge.

Suggestions?

Can you also let us know when (month/year) each of your cards were opened? And when your husband added you as an authorized user on his cards? This will help us figure out what cards you opened or were added to in the past 24 months, since conventional wisdom is to apply for Chase cards first if you’ve had less than 5 new accounts opened in the last 24 months (<5/24).

If you don’t know, it might be a good time to pull a free copy of your credit report to check. Since we’re kind of concerned about what Chase might see if and when you apply for their cards, you should pull a report from the credit reporting bureau that Chase will pull for you based on your state. Check which of the major three bureaus that might be here: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/knowledge-base/which-credit-bureau-does-chase-pull/

Ok we will need some more info to give good advice:

1) When were you approved for each of these cards (month and year)?
  • AmEx Blue Preferred
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred
  • Barclay Aviator AAdvantage

2) When was your husband approved for each of these cards?
  • Citi AAdvantage
  • Chase Marriott Rewards
3) What are your goals?

4) Are you looking for free travel or cash back or both?

5) Where do you like to/want to travel?

6) How many people are in your family (and if children what ages)?

7) Define how much spend you have coming up and over what time frame ($5k...$10k...over 3 months, 6 months, etc.)

Thanks - with this info I think you'll get a lot of great recommendations!

on top of what everyone has said, u should remove the AU and then ask the credit bureau to remove those AU. then sign up for the cards u want based on the questions above.

You're welcome.

Recommending a card is hard since we don't know when you applied for the cards listed. If you are over 5/24 then a good number of the Chase cards are not going to be available to you until you are back under 5/24.

I don't recall if you mentioned your travel goals. This also plays into what cards to recommend. For example, my priorities are first class, lie flat seats on international flights. Advising me to apply for Southwest cards would be a terrible recommendation.

If you value cash back moving forward in this hobby then purchasing the gift cards at grocery stores with your existing Amex would be a good move. However, meeting the spend requirements on the new card should always be the priority. Applying for a cash back card might get you $400 - $500 back depending on the card. Barclay Arrival +, Cap One Venture, BoA Premium Travel card.

I very rarely pick up a cash back card since variable points that can be transferred to an airline are worth far more to me than those only worth .01 on redemption. I only pick up a cash back card if I have a very specific purpose. A couple of months ago, I picked up the BoA Premium travel card because I knew I'd be spending the amount required to hit the bonus that same month and it was an easy way to get $500 off the bill at Victoria & Albert's. A few years ago DH and I picked up 3 cards each so we'd be able to wipe out $3,000 worth of excursions on a Disney cruise in Norway, Iceland and Scotland.

By the way, if you do get a Marriott Visa of your own, be sure to open apply the same month that your DH got his. That way you each get your free anniversary nights at the same time.

All excellent points which argue to avoid my earlier idea of getting both now, lol. @magickingdomprincess I'd get your CP first now and then get UR cards later like @Lain suggested. I know some of this sounds complicated but it's advice like this that takes you from churning 101 to churning 401 and beyond and only the most savvy players can nail the game to this extend. Great clarification @Lain!!

Just wanted to (again) say thank you both for your advice! :worship: I need to do lots of research and digest all of this info. In the meantime, I really hope that the Chase premier referral goes back to 50,000 points soon so that I can use one of your referrals!

Thanks everyone for all the Hawaii Info and stories! I am usually all about SW, but wanted to fly HA to Hawaii in their middle section....extra comfort or something. I guess it will come down to how much I can save on SW. Interested to get more info on them Soon!

Ok I started a new thread on DISchurners called Churning for Disney - Tips from our Disboards discussions (link here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DISchurners/comments/7o9aza/churning_for_disney_tips_from_our_disboards/)

My thought there is that we can link to posts here on the DISboards that are relevant to Disney Trips and it will keep them handy if we want to see them. You can use whatever format you want (or if you want me to add a post in my format just tell me and I'll do it).

The format I used was tagging the user, linking to the DISboards post and copying and pasting the actual comment too. Reminder to create a link on reddit do this [link text](link url). Again you don't have to follow my format but I thought that when I'm posting another users comment I'd do it that way to make sure they receive credit!

Check it out and add any info you think is helpful or find posts here you remember were helpful.

Any flights at the saver level can be booked with Avios. How many Avios the flight will cost depends on the distance since Avios is distance based. AA doesn't allow stopovers and it wouldn;t be 40K AA miles since you are using Avios and their program. However, since BA the Avios program is distance based you can create your own. You can fly Quantas LAX-SYD for 54,500 Avios in economy then fly SYD-AKL for 10,000 Avios. This one you can actually search for the award availability and book on BA's website. Hope that helps @hsmamato2
thank you...... so when would I book quantas,or when would I book AA or another airline? this is where it gets cloudy, how do I know which is optimal for what trip? Would it be less Avios thru QUantas bc of the distance? I guess I'm asking how do I translate the Avios needed for an AA flight? So checked out awardhacker which is pretty cool, but is it accurate? I'm inputting flight from LAX-Auck and it's showing me 35k BA miles.....

Thanks everyone for your input! I'm going to try to answer all your questions so you can advise me which card to apply for.

I pulled my credit report. I have 11 open accounts, have an 801 credit score, and utilizing 1% of my available credit (I don't know if any of this is important, but just in case).

I have the following open accounts:

Comenity/Express opened 12/17 (maybe I should close this? I just opened it to get a discount on DD's Christmas clothes)
Comenity JJill opened 9/16 (I use this for a 5% discount on my clothes but maybe I should close it)
Comenity/Pottery Barn opened 7/14 (opened for the discount and never used since)
Sync/Lowe's opened 11/12 (opened for discount and never use)
AmEx opened 8/14 (this is my Blue Preferred, with a $95 AF but 6% back on groceries)
Chase opened 6/16 (my Sapphire Preferred, got it for travel points and it's the main card I use)
Barclay's opened 11/17 (this is the Aviator AAdvantage that my husband suggested I apply for and I haven't figured out why yet, haha)
CitiCard CBNA opened 8/16 (I'm an authorized user on this one; I didn't sign up for it myself; I think it's DH's old AAdvantage card before he got the above card)
Chase opened 1/10 (DH's Marriott Rewards card, I'm just an authorized user)
Chase opened 10/15 (I don't know what this is, but it looks like somehow we have two Marriott Rewards accounts? I have two cards that look exactly alike
but have different account numbers and expiration dates (both are current). I asked DH about it and he seemed perplexed and
said that maybe one was a replacement card. This bears further investigation but I don't have time right now.

I guess the 11th open account must be my mortgage.

I also have several closed accounts:

Barclay's closed 1/10 (don't remember what this was)
AmEx closed 4/8
Credit First . closed 6/15 . (I think this was a Firestone card that I got to get a discount on my new tires)
Discover closed 1/17 (This actually is listed as Discover Financial Services and I don't know what it is)
SyncB/TJX . closed 1/17 (TJ Maxx/Home Goods, I think?)
SyncB/TJX . closed 7/13 (same; don't know why there are two)
Home Depot closed 11/17
Chase . closed 11/16 (I think this must be my old SouthWest card that I cancelled after I got the Sapphire Preferred)

Huh. Now that I have it all spelled out in front of me it doesn't look so good. I thought I only had the one Chase card and the one AmEx card in my name, but with DH adding me as an authorized user to his cards and the Chase account I closed in 11/16, it looks like I have 3 open Chase accounts and one that was closed less than 24 months ago.

Well, it is what it is. I can only do better moving forward. Like the old Chinese proverb says, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, but the second best time is right now"!

I'll go ahead and answer the rest of the questions you lovely people have asked and then hopefully you'll have the information you need to help me decide which card to get (or if I should even get a new card).

While cash back is great, I just can't get as excited about it as I do about travel points. Cash back just goes toward paying the bill and as such just gets absorbed back into our finances; it's more like a coupon on goods and services. Travel points add up to fun! It's not like we can use them to pay the water bill (and if there is a way to do this--which you guys surely would have figured out--I don't want to know about it!).

We are a family of four with two children who are almost 14 and almost 10. Husband travels weekly and flies probably about half the time. This is only between Tampa and Miami so not a huge amount of mileage, although it adds up. We both travel for conferences only a handful of times a year. Next one I know of is a conference I have in May in San Francisco. For most of our shorter trips we drive, but we usually take about one family trip a year that involves flying. Past family trips have been Greece, California, Colorado (twice), Cancun (twice), and Hawaii. DH and I occasionally travel without the kids, sometimes domestically, sometimes internationally. We also took one family cruise and will probably do one more before the kids leave the nest, although it's not really my favorite sort of vacation.

My favorite type of travel is anything foreign, and I especially love Europe. DH and I have been to Central and South America, and we would love to see Japan and China sometime soon, as well as some other Eastern countries. We'd also like to travel to some African countries. But my true love is Europe so if I have to state a purpose for accumulating travel rewards this would be my objective.

DD wants to go to college in Germany. Whether that will happen remains to be seen; she is only in middle school. But she seems fairly sure that this is what she wants and she is learning German. She and I took a trip to Europe together last year for spring break, but we weren't able to make it to Germany, so that is probably next on my list of travel plans. DH and I thought about trying to go as a family for this year's spring break but we waited too long and at this point it's probably too late to get a good price on airfare.

Also, I mentioned before that I am in grad school and will be done in a year to 18 months. Before I get a job, we are thinking about traveling for 9 months to a year. We have ZERO plans for this as yet, but I know DH would love to sail for a few weeks or so and I just want to keep moving and see as much as we can cover.

So we are really open to travel anywhere.

Regarding expenses, that is something I've been meaning to figure out. As a full time student and primary caretaker for the kids and the house, I don't really have a lot of expenses. DH has the bills set up to be paid from our joint checking account, and this is the lion's share of our expenses. I buy groceries, gas, clothes for the kids and me (not much), and various other miscellaneous stuff. I might take the kids out for pizza while DH is gone, or take them to Disney for the occasional weekend, and I pay for those things. But mostly I personally don't spend a lot, which is a good thing because my piddling graduate assistant salary wouldn't go too far. So I wanted to figure out how you guys pay for as many things as possible in a way that earns you points. I guess you can't pay your mortgage with a credit card, but what can I do to get the most back for every dollar we spend? I could take more control of the total household expenses (DH would love this!) if I knew a better way to do it than just having it come out of our checking account every month. This is something I want to work on in the future--have every penny we spend give us something back (or as close to this as possible!).

But to answer SouthFayette's question regarding the spending I have coming up, I need to spend $2000 for our Disney APs by the end of January (in case of a February price increase). I'm also planning several overnight trips to Disney and one slightly longer one by the end of May, so I could pick up at least another $1000 in Disney gift cards to use for expenses. This could all be purchased immediately, so let's say $3000 this month. I could do $5000 in three months if there is an especially good card that requires that, I'd just have to put some thought into it. DH charges all his flights to his Barclay's AAdvantage card, and all his hotel expenses to his Marriott rewards card, so that he gets the respective rewards from them, and then his company reimburses him. In order to apply for cards in the future and meet the minimum initial expense, I thought he could just put some of these expenses on the new cards because these add up into the 1000s in a hurry. He would lose out on the Marriott points and the frequent flyer miles but if it works out to be worth it he'll be ok with that. But again, that is in the future (like next month, haha).

Obviously, I have a LOT to learn! Right now I'm just about to take some really important comprehensive exams in school and am really busy and really stressed. It sounds so ungrateful to ask for help from you all and then say I don't have time to follow up on your advice, so I hate saying that I can't look into all of this right now! As soon as January is over and my exams are done (and I get through my two kids' birthday parties both in the same weekend!) I will be devoting the time to thoroughly reading all the resource you guys have suggested and making my best effort at learning the language you speak on this board! But for right now I just want to figure out the best way to pay for our APs since I have to buy them now. I'd hate to buy them with one of my existing cards and then sit down and figure out this "churning" thing in February and realize I should have used that $2000 toward a minimum spend on a new card.

Sorry this is SO long but I wanted to be thorough; thanks to anyone who is still reading at this point!

One more thing. Regarding referrals, is it ok to share that kind of information through this board, or is that against the rules? Meaning, if I were to apply for new cards could I use one of you as a referral so you would get the reward?

Thanks again!

1GoldenSun-

It looks like you may be 4/24...or possibly more but I don't see opening dates for those closed accounts. Can we assume those are all older than 2 years as far as opening date? I'd say maybe try to double dip a CF/CFU with your last spot? That would give you points to transfer to hotel/airlines of your choice, or book straight through the portal.

I'm not near as good at this as some of these other ladies, but I wanted to comment on a couple things.

Household bills- when you get time, sit down and go to each bill's website. There you can see if they will allow autograft from a cc for free. If so, change those bills to draft from one of you cards. I don't do it if the place will charge me a fee, but some are able to get enough points to make the fee worthwhile.

My DH travels for work as well, but is a hilton guy. I have him putting his hotel stays on his CSR because we rack up plenty of hilton points through the stays that I don't need to top them off with the cc. I value the UR points more because they are more flexible. I'd likely have him do the same if he flew a lot, but he doesn't so I haven't researched it a lot. If you value SW points and he can fly them TPA to FLL for work, then you could get a CP pretty easily. If he is under 5/24, see if he'd be willing to get a CSR if you think those UR points would work for y'all. You'd be able to transfer yours to his account for better redemption rates.

Hope that helps. :)

Comenity/Express opened 12/17 (maybe I should close this? I just opened it to get a discount on DD's Christmas clothes)
Comenity JJill opened 9/16 (I use this for a 5% discount on my clothes but maybe I should close it)

Just a few thoughts about this part of your post. First, once you open a card, there's rarely an advantage to closing it. I only close accounts if there is an annual fee. Some people close the SW cards if they think they might want to open them again, but the Chase 5/24 rule makes that a hard trick to accomplish. Otherwise, I leave the cards open because that helps your credit score. More cards = more available credit = lower utilization rate.

For the Chase 5/24 rule, what matters is when you opened the account. So x/24 would be however many accounts you opened since 1/16, which looks like 5/24, with several that will be dropping off this summer.

Just hoping you all can confirm for me...the 6% back on groceries with the Amex blue preferred resets on the billing cycle that includes January 1, right? So everyone's accounts are reset by now?

For some reason I thought I had to wait until my January statement closes???
