No they aren’t a transfer partner

I’m not and Virgin doesn’t do one ways. Have to book RT. The only other thing would be to book via United (more points than Virgin) and there are a lot of saver option for business class or position elsewhere like LAX. My suggestion would be to search Untied for non stops flying ANA from LAX-NRT or LAX-HND and do the same with SFO, JFK and IAD. It will be easy enough to get a positioning flight. The hard part is finding the long haul. Good luck! I’ve gotta go back to bed. Im still sick and the NyQuil is pulling Ken under.
Okay thanks for your help. I've looked at LAX and SFO and for some reason I'm not having any luck with either of those. I'll try to keep looking, but I should probably get some sleep, too. I've been taking NyQuil at night, too, since I've been having allergies!

I just want to say that I agree with Calypso. Our first points flight was SFO to LHR in 1st class using AA miles (so we were more limited) and I finally accepted that we would need to stop somewhere. We ended up stopping at JFK and spending 24 hours in NYC (by choice) and we had a blast. Even with the stop it was worth it since we had comfy seats. This last trip we had a layover in CDG because there is only one nonstop from SFO to Copenhagen and we couldn't get good award seats. While it's not ideal it was definitely the right choice for us. I'd take a lie flat seat with a stop over a direct in coach any day with these distances. I'm sorry you're not feeling well and I hope that tomorrow you'll be able to find something that works for you.

I don't mind having a stop in there, but I think Virgin will charge us for each leg separately (if I read that correctly). We honestly are not having fun calling Virgin. Every time we call we can't understand them and there are ALWAYS people talking loudly/laughing in the background. It's pretty bad to be honest.

Can you not transfer SPG points anymore? I was thinking I’d generally rather have SPG points and could accrue those faster than MR.

SPG points technically don't exist anymore; everything's been rolled into Marriott points. Starriott still transfers to ANA and VS, but now at a 3:1 ratio, and you still get the 5,000 miles bonus for every 60,000 Marriott points transferred.

I don’t know that Marriott points are easier to earn than MR, short of lots of stays at Starriott hotels, because of the new post-8/26 restrictions on the SPG and Marriott card signups. Whereas, there are A LOT of MR-earning cards, many with fat bonuses.

Thinking about dabbling into the world of MR points. Do they transfer to Southwest or Marriott/SPG?
If desperate for SW points you can go AMEX MR => Marriott => Southwest.

The thing is, you’ll get about 0.6cpp value out of that. You’d be much better off to get a Schwab Plat and cash out at 1.25cpp.

Similar comment - transferring to Marriott isn’t a great deal either as most people accept that Marriott points are worth < 1cpp

Does amextravel let you book Southwest for mr redemption?

Not online. But you can call into Amex Travel and have an agent book Southwest for you. However, I’ve read that Amex Travel agents may not be able to see all the fares. Alternatively, you can book directly with Southwest, then get reimbursed by redeeming MR after the charge posts at 1 cpp.

I'm so sorry. I haven't dealt with them, only BA and the accent wasn't an issue with the gentleman I dealt with. Hang in there!

Sinus infection is keeping me awake longer than expected. I wouldn’t book the positioning flight with Virgin. I’d sooner find a cheap flight to position on any airline that offers multiple inexpensive options to the destination you are going to position. We have to do a positioning flight for Scotland next year. The long haul is on BA out of JFK. I have a separate ticket booked on AA to get to JFK from MIA. One the Emirates flight we are doing to Dubai and the Maldives we had to position ourselves in IAH to get the award seats we wanted both coming and going using AS miles. We are flying back from IAH on United. We used Amex MR points to book that. If we don’t find a more convenient flight to get to Dubai than the IAH one then I will book our flight from MIA or FLL to IAH on a separate ticket on whatever airline is convenient. When I was looking for the award flights I was only looking for the long haul out of the US on the type of aircraft with the kind of seats I wanted. I never worry about how I am going to get to the US gateway I need to fly out of. That part is easy.

I can gladly say that I FINALLY booked tickets with Virgin!! :cloud9:We are flying in/out of LAX instead of Chicago and I won't be able to see my DISer friend that I was supposed to meet up with, but we got tickets and that's all that matters. We are going May 27-June 15 in business class. I was able to pick the seats out for both Dh and I (he wanted to sit behind me so we both are by a window but not next to each other). We were able to get the lying flat seats that ANA provides and I am super excited! The taxes and fees were mighty expensive and I didn't expect that, but we used our CSR to pay for those.

Thank you to everyone that helped!! I know I was kind of a downer lately waiting for points and then all of the issues actually booking the flights themselves. It was an experience and now I know if I ever do it again we will be planning much further ahead. I think we started this whole credit card "game" in April or May and were able to book business class seats in September so not too shabby.

Like I mentioned earlier, I had a REALLY hard time understanding the Virgin staff members. It turns out they spelled Dh's name wrong by switching his first letter to an F instead of an S lol. So I'll have to call and have them change that. :joker:

Congratulations! Seriously - it's been stressful the last 6ish weeks but we are all so happy for you guys and I hope you finally feel a sense of relief!!

How many URs did you end up using and what was the cash price you'd have paid for those same seats?? Always interested to hear what kind of savings people are seeing.

So we spent 180,000 URs by transferring them to Virgin (and still have some left over). If we would've booked those business class seats through ANA I think it would've cost around $7,136. I didn't include the taxes and fees because we had to pay those anyway, but that's still pretty amazing!

i bug my friend here and there for flight searches, turns out he hasnt used it for awhile so now we decided to split the cost of it. I think its time one of us DISers need a subscription to it.

And I am going to have to ask what ExpertFlyer is. :flower3:

ExpertFlyer is a website that allows you to search for awardspaces and the # of spaces available. This applies to upgrade seats and award seats. it also lets u set a alert to see if the seat u wanted is available to. Its expensive for people who dont travel though. $10 a month or $100 a year.

@Haley R Congrats! sorry it took me so long to get the details to u. U could also still try to get those ORD--NRT tickets since its better to do 1 direct flight than a reposition...
