Start accumulating MRs. MR is transfer partners with ANA and Virgin Atlantic, which you can use to book ANA award space. Moreover, Amex usually runs a transfer bonus for MR>VS once or twice a year.

Can you not transfer SPG points anymore? I was thinking I’d generally rather have SPG points and could accrue those faster than MR.

You know, for years I thought JAL (Japan Airlines) was the premier Japanese airline; but one of my wife's colleagues who is Japanese told her that ANA is considered the higher quality airline. Which is fine by me, because ANA is part of the Star Alliance and transfer partners with a lot more points programs.

JAL and ANA are both Skytrax 5-Star airlines. I've never heard that either one is thought of as being superior to the other & it mostly depends on the airport as to which one is more convenient. ANA's Premium Economy is probably a little better & JAL's Business Class is probably a little better. You can't really go wrong with either one

Remember - you have to select your airline BEFORE purchasing the gift cards. There are TONS of DPs on FlyerTalk about which ones work too. Just make sure you're careful and follow the procedures the right way and you'll be on your way to a FREE gift card courtesy of the Plat card I don't say this to make it sound scary - just that some people get excited and do it the wrong way and then are left frustrated.

ETA: I see @SouthFayetteFan said BOTH! I don’t disagree. However, I’m trying to be mindful of your DH’s 5/24 status. Both cards will eventually show on DH’s credit report, in about 2 months. If you don’t want 2 new cards taking up sub-5/24 slots, go for the Platinum! The 100k offer is extremely hard to pull, and tends to target new Amex customers! You can easily pull a 50k offer for the PRG in incognito mode. The incognito offer is 50k with a $2k MSR, which is only $1k more than your targeted offer.

As for the Platinum’s high $550 AF. I see 2x $200 airline credits there good for 2x $200 Southwest gift cards, $150 worth of Sak’s credits, and Uber/UberEATS credits if you ever use the service.

ok, got it! I sure hate that fee, but the double airline credit this year helps. I looked at the MR transfer partners and see quite a few that could come in handy for Hawaii...hopefully next summer or fall. Thanks for everyone's quick help!

Who has experience with Prepaid Gift cards and Venmo around here? Trying to maybe hit a little bit of that Q3 Freedom 5% category. It seems that Vanilla VGCs or MCGCs aren't gonna fly on Venmo? That's what I had read online, I picked one up (which if it doesn't work on Venmo, I have a use for it so no risk) and it's giving me an invalid zip code error (even though I setup my zip code).

Any thoughts or recommendations?

I don’t think the Vanillas work with Venmo. I feel bad, because I think I suggested you pick up some MCGCs from Walgreens, which happens to be Vanillas. You could liquidate the MCGCs on Plastiq’s Masterpass promo if you have bills to pay, or feel ballsy pay ... um ... your landlady?

I went with just plat for the reasons you and @SFF stated about pulling PRG later. Feeling good about it.

You can change it in January of every year. If you don’t make any changes, it stays the same airline as the previous year. I’ve also had success chatting with Amex to change the airline selection later in the year as long as I haven’t used any of the credit by saying I forgot to change it.

Re Uber credits. You get $15 every month, $3̶0̶ [edit: $35] in December. They’re use them or lose them. So they expire every month. There are some tricks to turn the credits into gift card balance, but I’ve never tried them.

Not sure about the gc, but she could have that card as her payment method in uber. Pay you for anything over the monthly credit? Not sure if the card earns more points with uber than what she's currently using.
