I love credit cards so much!

Had DH call Chase about retention offers on his SW Premier card. Was expecting a HUCA situation and needing him to try again tmrw, but shockingly, the call took 10min and most of it was the rep rattling off the “benefits”. I had DH outright ask, “I’m considering closing this card, so I wanted to see if there are there any retention offers available”. He barely finished the sentence and the rep immediately said she saw there’s a statement credit that is available and asked if he would like to accept. Ummm, yes :thumbsup2

Now we can keep the card open so I can refer myself at the end of the year hopefully for CP to replace the expiring CP that DH got last year :bounce:

This weekend I was waiting near the cash registers at Panda Express for about 10 minutes (apparently no one orders mixed veggies - I had to wait while they made them). While I waited, I watched about a dozen people check out, at least half paying with cash. I wanted to step in and ask, how about you give me the cash and I'll pay for your food with my credit card?

When I was talking to my MIL about the CSR in 2016, I logged in to my Chase account to show her how the travel credit worked. She noticed that I had charged things like $1.98 for coffee and said that she didn't know you could charge things for a dollar. I explained that with the CSR, it was like charging $3+ because of the 3x UR points for dining plus the 1.5 redemption for the CSR. Not sure if I convinced her. But I do think that 20 years ago, it was harder to charge things at places like fast food restaurants. I recall being at the mall about 20 years ago and none of the food court places took credit cards.

This past weekend, I noticed that my Dad had a Chase Freedom. I asked him if he had activated the quarterly categories and he said "I don't mess with the rewards". I wanted to say, I will activate the categories and take care of the rewards for you. Not sure he even has an online login.

Makes you wonder how many UR's he has.

:eek::eek: I’m not sure what is worse, using cash or having rewards and not messing with them!! I’m thinking not messing! You need to rescue those orphan points.

I’d offer to set up his online account and split the rewards with him. Lol.

How much did they offer? I'm going to be calling for the same reason in a couple of days. Just waiting for my RR anniv points to post first.

DP: I bought $400 Amazon gift card from Lowe’s, with my AMEX BGR - should be getting $40 credit.
Used the Amazon gift cards to buy $500 in Safeway gift cards, emailed them to my SIL since we don’t have Safeway here, she just bought a $500 Disney gift card for me.
OOP $360, $500 Disney dollars
Thank you @gottalovepluto for the tip! This is enough to cover my marathon registration and my part of the hotel for the marathon weekend!

@gottalovepluto Where can I find your tip? I missed it somewhere! Which isn't surprising the way this thread has been flying :D

Some of you may remember I was applying for my dd18 her own Discover IT card. She got a pending message and they said she'd get an email if approved. She never got an email so I figured they didn't give her the card...BUT, the shiny new card in just her name arrived a couple of days ago! Discover sent her credit score and it was 742. Is it just me or is that really high for a just-turned-18 yo with no credit history? She's been an AU'er on a couple of my cards for over a year. Maybe that is normal for kids out of school since they couldn't have been late on payments or anything yet. IDK. I was just surprised it was so high!

Would you mind listing the opening dates of those currently held cards?

I knew I would forget to mention something! I am under 5/24 (3/24). My inquiry dates are 8/16, 1/17, 9/17

I'm a bit hesitant to open more Chase cards as I hear they have been shutting a lot of accounts down lately so not sure how wise that will be to open yet another one with them.

I’m not sure what my credit score was at that age, but my mom started adding me as an AU on her credit cards when I was about 13. I’m not sure when she got me my own card, but I think around 16 when I started driving. I’ve never been denied for a credit card and have always gotten great rates on anything I would need to finance, so I’m glad she started me off right early!

Congratulations to you DD on her first credit card! Looks like you’ve done well by her!

Both my teens have credit scores over 700 - close to 750. One has been AU on one of my cards for about 2 years. The other has not. The son who is AU is slighter higher even though he is younger and has had his own credit for less time. (Both instantly qualified for the Discover IT student card when they turned 18.)

@wendow -

I recall you're looking to buy an Amazon Fire to replace DD's lost one. I don't know if your DD's Fire was an 8 or 10.

There's a deal for Prime Members-only today on a refurbished Fire HD 8 16GB Black tablet (with ads) for $39.99: http://a.co/3nexWfj

There doesn't seem to be any deals on the Fire HD 10 right now, but Prime Day is next week so there should be some good deals coming up.

Remember to go through Ebates for 4% cash back on Amazon devices and pay with Amazon gift cards you can buy for 5x UR or 10% off.

There are targeted Amex Offers too, but they're probably better maximized on other deals.
are these good to resell?

Hoping the DIS community can help me figure out which card to get next.

I have an almost $3,000 expense coming up so a min spend of $3,000 will be easily met and could probably reach to $5,000 if need be. I don't travel much (and when I do, it's for work so it's on the corporate card), so the majority of my expenses are food related/coffee (so that goes on my CSR), gas (have an Amex Offer so been using the Amex), and all other spend typically goes on the DoubleCash.

I would hate to have an expense where I can easily hit minimum spend on a new card go to waste, so I was thinking of getting a personal Platinum card to get the 60k bonus. However, with how little I travel, I feel like it is tough to justify a $550 annual fee (if it was waived the first year, this wouldn't even be a question!).

When did you open which cards? Any travel goals or are you more interested in cash back? With saying you do little travel, UR may be a better currency to try and collect since it is so versatile. Are you interested in opening a business card? Your last card was open almost a year ago, in my opinion you would be safe to open a chase card, or even double dip if you are comfortable doing so.

My DDs box has been sitting there for days. I told myself I would not open it. But you made me open it. hahaha Her score was actually low. It said 677 which surprises me because she signed up for credit Karma right before she applied and it said 730. She has been on AU on just one of our cards for right at 1 year now. She also has a very small student loan in her name. Maybe I should add her on another of our cards.

You listed a lot more than 3 cards. Are the other cards all pre2016? I think you are fine for another Chase card if so. I see you have an Amex business, I would definitely go for the CIP if I were you.

I would definitely go for the CIP, after that I would wait a few months and close the CSR (I’m assuming that is the 8/16 card) then double dip CSP/CSR.

This deal? Not really.

Refurbished Fire HD 8 16GB tablets seem to be selling for $50-65 on eBay, shipped, but sometimes significantly less. Then you have to factor in roughly 13% of your sale price will go to eBay and PayPal fees, and shipping on these tablets will run you about $7. You might break even; or if you count the 4% back from Ebates and 5x UR on Amazon gift cards used to pay, you might even make a few bucks. It’s really up to you to decide if it’ll be worth the time.

I have resold new Kindles and Fires for better margins when I’m able to combine an Amazon price drop with an Amex deal, 4% Ebates on Amazon devices, 5x UR on CF or CIC for Amazon gift cards, paying eBay seller fees and shipping through CIP for 3x UR. Kindles and Fires do sell pretty well on eBay (but I’ve only sold new), and they’re really easy to ship.

$39.99 to buy a Fire HD 8 direct from Amazon, factory refurbished with warranty (albeit 90 days), is a good deal for personal use.

ETA: I'll also add that Amazon has a trade-in program for Kindles and Fires. If you trade in an old Kindle or Fire, even if it's not working, Amazon will provide you with a prepaid shipping label to send it in, Amazon will appraise it, then send you an Amazon gift card for its value (I believe the minimum is $5 even for non-functional devices) and apply a 25% coupon to your account good towards a current generation Kindle or Fire (whichever device you traded in). So what some people do is buy a cheap, non-functional Kindle or Fire off eBay, trade it in, essentially, for the 25% off coupon. The trade-in process takes about 2 weeks.

Ugh. So I am clearly on a run of bad luck. I had DD buy 30,000 Starpoints and then transferred them into my account to try to buy one last Flight and Hotel package. After six business days they still had not shown up so we called and sure enough, the transfer didn't go through. The woman on the phone said they couldn't transfer since I had already bought points this year. My understanding was that they had this rule a few years back, but weren't enforcing it. Apparently they decided to against me! Anyway, I think I can get around it by creating a Marriott account for her, and then calling to make the Flight and Hotel package with the two Marriott accounts. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, and/or let me know if there are any stumbling blocks to watch for. Her Starwood account is over 30 days old.
and this is why I don't think I'll bother, altho I'm tempted to buy..... my accts are lways the ones that the 'rule' is enforced....
