I love credit cards so much!

I’m eying the Amex Blue Business Plus after the CIC if I can get the 20k MR bonus/$5k MSR offer. (I’ve pulled it a few times via incognito.) 2 MR on everything up to $50k/calendar year, $0 AF.

There really doesn't seem to be a downside with this card, I keep looking for the catch (other than it's a Biz).
I'm hoping hubby's willingness to open a Marriott Biz card extends to this one too if I can get the bonus to come up. It'd be great if he could get that so we'd get a decent bonus, not count on his 5/24 status, and have a free card to keep his MR points so he can stop paying for his Green card when it comes up for renewal.
He's been reluctant to close it since it's his oldest card but I'm pretty sure his next oldest card is still more than 10 years old so trying to wear him down that the AF isn't worth it anymore. But I'm hoping 2 MR on everything, like you said, brings him around. It just really sounds too good to be true.

I'm currently kind of 'planless' also.... this always seems to happen to me after a big drop in points, where I use a bunch to create a vacation plan...and then I don't know what to do for a while...or which direction to go. I've been doing some cards as I'm too over 5/24 to get much with chase at the moment, but I'm starting to rethink this pattern and planning for the 2 year plan for me.... was tossing around getting into MR stuff, just b/c it seems like lots of good offers pop up for people using like a point of MR to get. Otherwise not too sure about using them. I also kind of like the BoA travel card(with the airline reimbursement) or the Hyatt card, since it seems like good redemption with Hyatt or I can use for SWA (which I'm always greedy over)

@Haley R - If you decide to join us here, this is thread I mentioned on the ABD boards where we'd be able to help you out with your travel goals.
Well I’m here lol. We are planning on going to Japan next May. We aren’t set on dates but are thinking either April or May would be better for crowds/weather. We would like to see both Osaka with surrounding areas and then move on to Tokyo.

I’m kind of just struggling with plane tickets (where to fly out of/in to, when to buy, how long is too long of a flight) and also with staying at Disney. I like the looks of the Hilton Tokyo bay but it would be amazing to have at least one or two nights at the miracosta. Dh and I both have good credit with no debt besides student loans. We pay off our credit cards every month on time.

I’m completely new to this idea and will take any advice if it will save us $ for our trip. We’ve never traveled out of the country before together (dh has never and I have with my parents as a child).

Hello. I have a 10k vet bill coming up because my dog needs surgery. I think it's a good time to get a card to offset some of the expense. I could wipe out a min spend in one day.

I'm looking for suggestions. We like to spend our points on luxury travel and I am SPG gold (which will go away in February). For this reason I was eyeballing the Amex Platinum because you do get gold status in Marriott, Starwood, and Ritz Carlton. However, we don't travel all that much and the fee is $550 ! The airline credit of $200 sounds like it's hard to use as well. Can you use that for upgrading to premium seating?

So, here is what we have:

I'm 5/24, my husband is 4/24

Me:
United MPE
SPG Amex Business
SPG Amex
Chase Freedom
Chase Marriott
Chase Disney
CSP
BArclay Jetblue
BofAmerica visa I never use

Husband:
CSR
CSP
AMEX Every Day Preferred
Barclay Jetblue
SPG Amex Business

Thanks so much!

Is it terrible that I’ve been thinking about getting the next card after the next two cards that I haven’t even gotten yet all day?

Yep, same boat here  I want that AND the personal Plat if I can pull the 100K offer potentially. Would like to use it at the SFO in June after you made it sound so easy. Oh and yes, this is before we have Dh’s CIC and waiting on my 30 day status to change.

:sad: Dh's CIC app went from 30 days -> 2 weeks -> 7-10 days

Means denial right?

Hold out hope that it's just verification? Going from 2 weeks to 7-10 days...maybe that's what it was

I saw that a lot in the DP's online but does that make sense for someone who has a 15 year relationship with Chase, including checking and savings accounts? I guess I don't understand when verification comes into play but my dh has had a lot of Chase cards, including CIP...I'd love to think that verification was all that was needed!!

What do they ask for? My dh is NOT gonna want to call!

A slightly different but close enough situation....DH applied and was instantly approved for the CSR last weekend. When we got the card and I tried to verify it online I was unable to because they wanted to ascertain that it was indeed him who applied. (Of course it wasn't. It was me who applied.) They asked his mothers maiden name, email address, gave him a list of addresses and possible employers (all of which were fake), and needed to text or email a code for him to verify. My dh is a reluctant P2 and really didn't want to call in either, but with the call on speakerphone and me coaching him it was fine and over in about five minutes.

Don’t lose hope. DH’s app went that trajectory and a call from verification followed. Was approved after being asked to confirm security code via text, confirming the business name, and mother’s maiden name. Rep put us on hold for 3 min and came back with the approved message message! Good luck!

Having a no fee MR card to hold all my points is a big reason I want this card too. I'm planning on canceling my PRG next year (my third oldest card), and who knows what I'll do with my Plat (churn another flavor if I have the slots, or keep it if I don't?). Then there's the 2x MR on everything. That'll easily replace the 2x MR on gas, groceries, and restaurants that the PRG offered (but I never use anymore because there are more rewarding cards for those categories). The BBP may replace the SPG cards after the nerf as my go to non-bonus, non-MSR everyday card. And if CIP ever stops coding 3x for Plastiq, the BBP will probably be my backup since the 2 MR helps to offset the 2.5% fee some. I guess the "catch" is the $50k calendar year cap, which might pose a real limit on actual businesses, but not so much with personal spend mixed in with other cards.

@calypso726 sent you here knowing you'll be in good hands. Are you signed up for ABD Japan?

Where are you located and what airport(s) do you fly out of? Is there a reason why your plan starts in Osaka and the Kansai region before moving onto Tokyo (vs. the other way around?) Do you plan to fly from Osaka to Tokyo, or are you taking the Shinkansen? How long are you planning for your trip? What are you doing for accommodations? Do you have any miles or points with airlines or hotels already?

Good credit and paying off all your credit cards each month is a great start. This hobby involves opening up many credit cards for their signup bonuses (and sometimes the benefits they offer), but your gains are negated if you incur interest and fees. Relatedly, how do you feel about annual fees on credit cards?

Each card issuer has different rules for applications to regulate "gaming" behavior on their cards, so it would help to know before we get you started how many credit cards (including store cards) you've opened in the past 24 months? Are any of those cards authorized user ("AU") cards? Do you have a spouse and is he/she willing to open credit cards too (become "Player 2")? If so, how many credit cards (including store cards and AU cards) have your spouse opened in the past 24 months? Please give us a list with the name of the card, and the month and year each was opened.

How much is your typical total monthly expenses, and how much of that do you put on credit cards? (Every dollar spent is a potential point or mile, or multiples if its the kind of spend that's covered by a bonus category or put towards a minimum spending requirement to earn a new card signup bonus.)

I know these are kind of personal questions, but we need this to get a sense of where you're starting out and what are the best cards to recommend for you (and hopefully your spouse).

Which card for theatre/movie/concert tickets? What about hotel rooms? Oh, I guess that's travel, so that would be Ink. Does Costco count as groceries and if not, which card is best? Which card for Amazon purchases, or does Amazon break up your spending into categories?

My cards:
AmEx SPG Business
AmEx Gold Business
AmEx Blue Cash Preferred
Chase Ink Business Preferred
Chase Sapphire Preferred

Also, when I've used the AmEx Blue Cash Preferred card in the past, I've used the cash back I've accumulated toward paying my bill. Is there a better way to use this "money?" I want to do what gets me the most, of course, but it's somehow less fun just saving money on my credit card bill vs accumulating points for travel.

Regarding Plastiq, how are the fees offset by the points earned? I don't understand it enough to do the math.

Woohoo, last charge finally posted to complete my SPG Biz spend! That took longer than I planned but still with a few weeks to spare.
I was just calculating out what the points would be with the conversion and realized I'll actually have more Marriott points than hubby has in his account right now. 68 days of spend on SPG = ~ 2 years of spend/stays on Marriott Premier. I wonder if that might turn him fully around on the bonus game

Hello All!

I wandered over here after reading the post by @calypso726 on the ABD forum. I've always been intrigued in travel hacking but I know there are different rules in Canada. Has anyone been successful in travel hacking with canadian credit card providers? I already have the SPG Amex and use it almost exclusively, unless a retailer doesn't take AMEX, which is actually frustratingly common.

I'm interested in learning how to maximize my spending to more easily afford my travel goals, many of which include DCL cruises, ABD and other Disney destinations.

Any advice is appreciated!

No we are not signed up with ABD Japan. It looks like it would cost WAY more than we were planning to spend. I think we would spend half of that and maybe even less.

Located in Iowa. Usually fly out of Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, or Moline. Are willing to fly out of Chicago if it's worth the drive. It doesn't matter to us if we start in Osaka or Tokyo. We are planning on taking the Shinkansen between the two major cities. We are planning about two weeks for our trip. We would like to do 4 nights in Osaka, 4 nights in downtown Tokyo, and 5 nights at Disney (are flexible with this). We looked at some hotels in Osaka and liked the Harmonie Embrassee. For Tokyo, we thought about AirBnB for the first 4 nights and then either Hilton Tokyo Bay and/or one of the three Deluxe Disney hotels on property. We have no points with airlines or hotels already. We are completely new to this.

DH says he isn't super comfortable with annual fees, but is open to it if we get more back in return and can cancel the card after our trip.

We have opened 1 store card in the last 24 months. This card isn't an AU card. I do have a spouse and he is open to opening cards. Together, we have only opened one store card in the last 24 months.
Musician's Friend Synchrony Bank Credit Card-December 2016

Our typical total monthly expenses are around $3,500 and about $1,500 is put on our credit cards.

@pillow -

We were discussing when Elite nights from CC spend credit to Marriot several hundred posts ago. I was checking out the Marriott account and was surprised by an extra night in there I wasn't expecting. It was one from CC spend. Last CC points posted to Marriott 1/22 but I know when I was looking just a couple weeks ago after the program announcement that 1 night wasn't there. So I seem to be wrong on the couple days assumption :)
Not sure if that's the norm or something was just off but that seems to be a really long time. (at least 12 weeks)

Good to see you again, @mefordis! I'm so sorry to read about your dog. I hope he gets good care and better soon!

As you know, it helps us help you if you can include the month and date next to each card so we can get a good 5/24 count for you.

As for the Amex Platinum, as you know, it has a $5k minimum spending requirement (MSR) in 3 months. It seems with your vet bill, you may be able to take care of the MSRs on two cards. But you'll want to first make sure your vet accepts Amex.

So here are my thoughts on the Platinum. The public offer for this card is only 60,000 Membership Rewards (MR) points. Amex has higher and better 75,000 or 100,000 MR points signup offers on the Platinum for the same $5k MSR. Amex signup bonuses are once per lifetime, per card product, so if you go for the 60k MR offer on the Platinum now, you won't be able to close and churn this card again in a few years to get another bonus; and Amex does not match offers, so if you go for the 60k MR offer, that's it, you can't get Amex to match you to the higher and better 75k or 100k MR offers after you’ve been approved. Because of this, it’s in your best interest to apply for an Amex card only if you can get the highest and best offer. There are tricks to getting targeted for the 75k or 100k MR offer on the Platinum:

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/two-new-ways-access-higher-american-express-offers/
https://www.doctorofcredit.com/find-increased-targeted-american-express-sign-bonuses/
https://www.doctorofcredit.com/cardmatch-offering-people-100000-points-american-express-platinum/

The Platinum 100k MR offer seems to have disappeared again from Cardmatch, and I’ve only been able to pull up the 75k MR offer via incognito mode recently.

I don’t have too much time to go over all of the Platinum card’s benefits, so I’ll touch on the two you mentioned: automatic gold status and the airline fee credit.

The Platinum gives you automatic gold status at Hilton and SPG, which can be status matched to gold at Marriott and Ritz-Carlton. However, Marriott acquired SPG and last month announced plans to further merge the loyalty programs. SPG Gold achieved through the Platinum will still translate to Marriott Gold (and won’t get you bumped up to Platinum Elite under the new program), which will get you upgrades to enhanced rooms but not suites, late checkout at, I believe, 2 p.m., but no breakfast or lounge access. Basically, Gold under the new Marriott/SPG program won’t get you too much.

The $200 airline fee credit is harder to use than the CSR’s travel credit. You have to pick the airline you plan to use the credit on. Then, to qualify for the credit, the charge has to be one that Amex thinks is an airline fee; so eligible fees include: checked baggage fees, itinerary change fees, pet fees, seat assignment fees, in-flight amenities and entertainment. The benefit terms specifically exclude upgrades, so a seat upgrade may or may not work. What does work is buying gift cards on Delta (in $50 increments in different transactions), American (in $100 increments in different transactions), and Southwest (in up to $200 increments) if you’ve selected to use your credit on those airlines. You can use the gift cards to offset the cost of paid flights or sell them on a gift card exchange and get ~85% of the face value back.

The airline fee credit is a calendar year benefit. So you could use up the $200 credit this year if you get the Platinum now, and again after 1/1/19 when the benefit resets and you get another $200 credit to double dip. This is approximately $400 in value, which is a huge part of offsetting the $550 annual fee.

The card also includes $200 worth of Uber credits doled out at $15 each month and $35 in December. If you don’t use one month’s credit, they expire at the end of the month. I don’t know if you use Uber. I usually don’t, so I end up using them for UberEATs, which is a terrible value because UberEATs here charges a $4.99 booking fee and I’ll tip my driver, which eats up that $15 credit quick.

You fly out of EWR, right? If you can fly out of LGA, you can use your Platinum card to access the Centurion Lounge, which is definitely a luxurious step up from typical airport lounges, and gets you complimentary dining and drinks. There are Centurion Lounges domestically at LGA, Philadelphia, Miami, SFO, SEA, Dallas, Houston, and Las Vegas. New Centurion Lounges are set to open at JFK in early 2019, DEN in 2019, and LAX.

Keep in mind that the Platinum is a personal card that will count against the 5/24 rule, and will add another card to your count that will have to drop off if you ever want to get another Chase card under 5/24 again. Amex has a lot of business cards that you can consider that won’t add to your 5/24 count.

I have to tell you about our experience at the MCO Hyatt. Dh & I stayed there on our arrival night (landed at 11:30pm) and then stayed there on our last night (would have had to be turning in the car at 6:30am so decided to have a lazy morning). We got off the plane and headed to the hotel, and wow, it is just so nice and convenient to walk right there. We hadn't checked bags so it was really fast. Got into our 6th floor, standard room by midnight, and got settled in (shower, pj'ed and in bed). Dh is right to sleep but me, it takes me awhile to settle down, and feel my way around a new bed. At about 1:45, I hear an alarm going off. I am hearing a siren but also loud speaker talking. I literally fly up, thinking something bad is happening, and run to look out the windows. Expecting to see people running around, instead I see people just milling about. People sitting on benches, janitors slowly pushing brooms and emptying trash cans. So, I get back in bed thinking this will stop at any time. Nope. Keeps going so I get back up and go out on the balcony to try to hear what the speaker voice is saying but I can't understand what's being said. People are still just slowly moving around though so I assume there is no reason to be concerned. This goes on for 2 hours! I fall asleep and then am woken up again at about 6am as the airport opens back up. The opening procedures include lots of noise as they open up the concourse. So, I am back up (light sleeper is putting it mildly)...My dh slept through it all

We go to check out and the guy asks how our night was...so I tell him about my night and that we are back there in 5 days and I do not want a room where I can hear all the crazy stuff going on at night. He says he will go ahead and upgrade us to a room that looks out onto the runway, and assures me it will be much quieter. Sure enough, we arrive 5 days later and are given a 10th floor (top floor) runway-facing room. SO FUN! We facetimed our kids from there cause our youngest loves all vehicles and we could see the tram, planes, buses (including disney) and luggage carriers. It's pretty much his dream! And add to that...NASA shot off a rocket while we were there! So we got pics of that!

Not a huge fan of the standard room but loved the runway room!

ETA: Upon checking back in, the lady says that apparently, it was an airport drill that went on all that first night and that should not have happened. Either way, I told her I'd never stay in one of the interior rooms again.
Thanks for the review. We have reservations there in June and November. Hoping to get a runway view room.
