I love credit cards so much! v7.0 - 2025 (see first page for add'l details)

I think it's fine if your previous velocity has been 3 months or more and you can get your open biz cards to 2 or less. I'm on a similar timeline and plan to get one for each of us in early October. I'll make sure the next Chase card after that is spaced longer so it still averages out to 3 months.
I hope by then we know what's happening with SW CP so I can decide whether to do another Ink for me on top of DH's. But yeah, my velocity has been good this year, hadn't applied for a Chase card since last November

nostalgia? I would move over the credit before closing, though.
Absolutely not nostalgia.
I need to call and purchase a $75 egift card from SW before closing to keep the SW $75 credit because I keep getting error messages when I try to do it online. I think it's laziness. Rolls my own eyes at my own self...
Edited to add that I did in fact roll over that credit earlier today - so I'm on my way to cancelling!

I was also looking at Mapito; we have just shy of 400k BonBlah points, but I don't think there's any way that we can get another 400k in the next few months. Maybe a good transfer offer from AmEx or Chase will roll around, then I'd consider moving points to make the trip happen.

@calypso726 I understand your fear -- those night walks back to your cabin are no joke. Biggest scare we had was in Zambia, leaving our cabin in the morning for the walk to breakfast; the cabins were round-ish, as I was coming around the side of our cabin, about 4' from me was a hippo munching the grass. I grabbed my dd (who was on her phone just behind me) and we ran for our lives back to our cabin. I called for an escort to breakfast once inside. It was broad daylight -- for a hippo to be out of the water was unusual, so it was very unexpected. People asked if I got a picture -- duh, no I didn't stop to take a pic, that split second could be the difference between life and death. Hippos are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa to people.

OMG! I would have freaked out completely. That is quite unusual! Hippos kill more people in Africa each year than any other animal.

They told us we were fine during the day to walk to breakfast or the photography studio. I did the walk the first day going to the Canon studio and back and then after dinner with security at night. That was the last time. The following day, I called for the golf cart and escort even during the day.

A few seat-selection and related questions:

1. About Southwest Basic fare--is the only real difference/drawback that a credit from a canceled flight is only good for 6 months? SW is still doing the A-B-C boarding groups, correct? So Basic fare doesn't restrict seat selection?

2. Are there any huge differences in first class on American compared to United? In the weird position that first class seats are not much higher than ecomony, and flights times are essentially the same, for both AA and United. I feel like my last very bad flying experience was on United, but rationally I believe that they all are equally capable of being very bad.

With Hawaii Airline miles going away, has anyone thought about applying for the Hawaiian Airlines Business card?

Any data points on approvals?
https://www.hawaiianairlines.com/hawaiianmiles2/credit-card-business

It doesn't look like the cards are going away. Link

I did the Hawaiian personal and biz on the same day since Barclays combines pulls. Did personal first since wanted that more. It was instant approval, then biz need verification. Was 2/6 and 4/12 inquiries. DH did the same, personal was instant, but biz was denied. He was 1/6 and 3/12 inquiries. Memory is fuzzy, but I think denial letter cited D&B biz report.

Applied for one and was not approved ….will have to see if there are other things I can find or just as Elisa said “let it go” and earn whatever points I can the old fashioned way through .actual spend
Just hate to now have to limit our trips to see the grandchildren 😥
Have you tried any of the other Serve-like cards? I also have a Bluebird account but have not used it since they added a fee for using it at Wal-Mart. I seem to recall discussion of OneDot (or maybe GreenDot) and NetSpend either here years ago or maybe a different board.

What is the best airport to reposition to for a flight to China? My daughter is looking for honeymoon flights to Shanghai next March.

So I can say this here bc it's rambling... :rolleyes1 I'm looking at all the cc's for airlines right now, and I have no loyalty ATM. I'm coming off my SWA loyalty (can't app for their cc anyway right now) with just a few thousand points to use up and then who knows? Starting to get into AA,but they have no direct flights to MCO for me,and I know I'll be wanting those in future....but I love AA in general now that I've tried it.... I have a few leftover Jetblue points from some trips a few years back, and considering the new (very good) offers I'm seeing to use for Florida flights in the future (what kind of upside down world is this where JB flights are coming up cheaper than SWA?) It's really hard to make a decision about next cc,anyone else having this problem? Prob overall AA is more valuable to me I guess....
I am also in the process of divorcing SWA. I got 2 AA cards earlier this year, and I have found the AA miles very valuable. They've already come in clutch 3 times for last minute bookings at very good rates. I often see 6K flts. That being said, I just got the United Quest because I thought that would give me more options as I leave SWA.
Chase data point: I applied for the United Quest 100k card. I got the review page followed by a call from Chase (thank God I answered) verifiying that it was me who applied for the card followed by an immediate approval of $13k. She said the card should arrive in 1-2 weeks.

I'm almost at premier gold so I thought this, combined with my upcoming flights would likely put me there. I have college tuition due, and a minimum of 4 United flights in the next few months (work related), but will pay for my husband's flights with this card.

I still need to drop my SW card. Why am I dragging my feet?
If you need the card sooner, you can expedite. I was approved over the weekend and got mine today.

You're welcome! Yes, I have and it is fantastic for points or cash! I couldn't find any info on camera rentals on their website, so I would absolutely be sure they have that or make arrangements to rent one and bring it with you. IMHO that is a must for what may be a once in a lifetime trip. If you are like me and don't know how to use a proper camera and lens, keep it on auto and make sure the lens is a 100-500. That will handle 95% of your pictures. I see they have night game drives and for those one would need to adjust the camera beyond auto for low light.

Park fees included is a huge money saver! Ours were $200 per person per day. Having your own private safari vehicle without an additional cost is also outstanding. I see the website states that 4 of the big 5 roam the area. I would ask if they take you to the area where the rhinos frequent if the Big 5 is on your list.

Now, the reasons that I personally am unlikely to book Mapito have nothing to do with the resort and what I think they will offer or anything like that. It is a fantastic deal and I am sure well worth the points or cash. I discovered a new irrational fear as we got closer to our trip with regards to lions. The population of lions is higher in Tanzania than Masai Mara. The layout of the lodge camp is a non starter for me. At night, one must be escorted back to the lodge for safety reasons. Hyenas, lions etc. I was in lodge 20 at JWMM and that was way too long of a walk or golf cart ride after dinner which left my anxiety about nocturnal wildlife shooting through the roof. All 15 of the tents at Mapito would require that long walk/golf cart ride. I'm just not doing that again. I've already spoken with the staff at JWMM and was assured that if/when we come again, we could make arrangements so that I will be in the tent right next to the restaurant. I explain this for anyone considering this type of an amazing experience that may also have trepidation or is downright panic stricken over the wildlife. Don't get me wrong, I would absolutely do the trip again despite my fear. I just now know the steps that I need to take to be sure I am able to mitigate them at a manageable level. For me that is a tent right next to the restaurant, a very experienced guide and a private vehicle so I can request we do not go anywhere near any lions at all. Hope this helps :flower3:

Super helpful info. I have a lot of fears... this particular one I am probably too ignorant about to have fully developed it yet, so :rotfl2:
I would really like to do the JW but I just got Marriott cards in the last year so actually amassing that many points is not in the cards for me. But the cash prices for Mapito are palatable...

What is the best airport to reposition to for a flight to China? My daughter is looking for honeymoon flights to Shanghai next March.

When I went to China back in 2019 we flew from Newark to Beijing and then from Shanghai to SFO, so if she's just going to Shanghai, I believe SFO would have the most options, but I'd check all major airports from the West coast.

I have a few funny stories from our brief stay in Zambia (2 or 3 nights, can’t remember). I had a killer migraine late on our first afternoon and tried to power through, sadly to no avail — was violently ill in full view of the diners in the restaurant. The guard walking us back to our cabin had no clue what to do, I just said walk with us as fast as possible (I was a combo of mortified and needed a bed asap / didn’t care). Got back to cabin, got into pajamas and went directly to bed. Dd called out to me about a giant spider in the bathroom, I told her she was on her own. She was also incredibly worried about me — she’d never seen me sick before. I had to reassure me it was a migraine and I’d be fine by the morning. Ugh.

Also was served a dish described as ‘ceviche’, which I was assured was cooked (I’m not a fan of raw cold soup, blah). When it came it legit looked like a brain. No way could I even have a bite, but the waiter was so proud of the dish that he stood and waited for me to try (he wasn’t going to leave our table until I tried it). I tried to take a bite, but just couldn’t deal with the texture and had to, ahem, make use of the napkin. Dd found this hilarious, I apologized profusely.

Also saw a black mumbo (very poisonous snake) on the road while safely ensconced in the resort van. It actually struck at the tire as the driver slowed to show us.

Perhaps the best thing we saw was the double rainbow over Victoria Falls. Good memories!

And this was a one and done for me. Absolutely terrifying getting there and back, but I have the pic, right?

That type of experience would have absolutely led me to a one and done. Yikes!!! Our biggest hesitation for going back is literally, how on earth do we top what we have experienced. DH said, he'd love to go back and isn't ruling it out but the experience we had is un-toppable. It's a long way and a lot of points and miles to risk the feeling that it just wasn't as good or magical the first time. Not saying we won't but expectations definitely would need to be tempered and adjusted. Our second time to the Al Maha was kind of like this. It was good, but not as good as the first time we went.

I have not researched any of the other Serve like cards, the 3 family dollars were so convenient, the Walmart by me is not and the times I have gone there is very chaotic……
haven’t had the time to see how any of the other cards work yet…DHs company was bought in April and since they they have been laying off people, he was laid off last week so I’ve gone down the rabbit hole looking into Medicare 🤪

IHG cards - I have both the personal and the biz cards. The AF for the biz card is due soon and I'm on the fence about keeping it. As long as I have one of them I'm platinum, get a free night, get 4th night free when booking with points, and get $50 a year United credit. None of those benefits double when having 2 cards other than the free anniversary night. Also, DH has the personal card as well. Anyone else have both and are finding good value?

DH and I both have the old Select card, and the newer Premier card, so two personal cards each. With those we get the 4th night free, we get 10% refund on points bookings (old Select benefit), and 4 FNC per year. I hardly ever use the United travel bank, but the Free Night Certs we have always found good value for, especially since you can top them off over 40k points. I will keep my old Select card ($49 AF) as long as I possibly can, since a FNC for that amount is a steal. For the $99 AF on the Premier, we think more carefully about where we're going to use the cert, but it's typically been for properties that are around $200-250/night otherwise, so to us it's a good value. Plus the footprint of IHG is a bit better than Hyatt, so we can find hotels in random places sometimes when there is no Hyatt in sight. There was only 1 year that I can recall that we weren't going to use one of the FNC, but I reached out and they gave me points for the expiring cert, so I was happy with that. Every other year, I have plans for the FNC before I even get them. If anything, my problem is that I want the Biz card for us both also! lol
